Thanks, Higgs | | Liberalism and capitalism address themselves to the cool, well-balanced mind. They proceed by strict logic, eliminating any appeal to the emotions. Alert | Jim,
Only part of the river was real. If you take the boat ride the tour guide shows you all the man-made canals that were used to connect to the river and create what they have. In fact, much of the water ride is through the man-made canals.
If Canyon lake and other lakes can be built, then I think canals can be built here as well.

Alert | Posted By SouthBronx on 08/03/2007 2:14 PM They built the Riverwalk in San Antonio, TX and it has been a big plus for the city. People come from all over to see the Riverwalk and the Alamo. I was in San Antonio in 1982 and then again in 2005. What a difference 23 years made. There is now a shopping Mall by the walk, as well as several restaurants. Tourists come just to ride the boats around and spend the entire day around the walk. Now, if we can only get something like the Alamo to put near it.
SouthBronx, at the rate things are going at City Hall, those double wides are going to be the 21st century Alamo. | | Stupid should hurt!

Alert | Posted By Devil Dog on 08/03/2007 1:16 AM The Monitor reporting to promote a Riverwalk in Copa calling it "Main Street Maricopa". Cool idea.
Stupid, stupid, STUPID idea.
Arizonas natural rivers and riparian areas are disappearing because they are being sucked dry. The San Pedro River no longer flows year-round -- even the Colorado is reduced to a trickle during some seasons. And yet Maricopa would be willing to WASTE millions -- no, billions -- of gallons of water (reclaimed or not -- the water can be used elsewhere) on this.
We live in the DESERT people.

Alert | but... but... but... Tempe's got one! So there!
At least Tempe has a river there - a dry one, but a river nonetheless.
I don't know what the long-term environmental effect would be. I would suppose that an environmental impact statement would be required. Hopefully, someone's looking out for the public interest when these things are considered, and not just the economic interest but the ecologic interest as well.
My biggest concern is that this not turn into a public subsidy. If it's to be built, let the developer take the risk and bear the expense. If it succeeds, let them reap the profit. The city will gain from sales tax, sure. That's the way it's supposed to be. No subsidies, exemptions, or partnerships. With a city councilman as a partner in the corporation, I don't think that's too likely. | | Stupid should hurt!

Alert | The major difference between Maricopa and cities like San Antonio, Tempe or Scottsdale's Riverwalks - they are TOURIST destinations! Duh...when was the last time Maricopa hosted a major convention or was considered a tourist destination? Ahhhh... never? Do you want to be a tourist town like San Antonio? Infrastructure such as hotels, convention center, dining and amusements don't exist. And will not exist for many years if ever.
It sounds like a big waste of the taxpayers dime. And if you don't think the developer has plans to suckle the city breast - guess again. I can hear the pitch now... "For only $50 Million in tax incentives - think of the revenue the city will gain by having the next Six Flags located on the Riverwalk. Conventioners and family vacationers from all across the US will make Maricopa Arizona their next travel destination. Think of all the Europeans that come to the Southwest to experience the old west traditions... right here in Maricopa..."

Alert | I thought it was stupid when Tempe did it, I pray to God that Maricopa doesn't do it!!!!
We can have a nice downtown area without sacrificing our natural landscape and without permanently harming our ecosystem.
I am highly opposed to these lake communities (sorry if I offend) but seriously people we live in a DESERT! If you want lakes move to Michigan!

Alert | I would prefer it not to happen either. I would like to see more outdoor patio areas that have live music.
There is a nice example in CaveCreek by the boulders resort. Some restaraunts and shops all with outdoor seating. The host live blues&jazz on Thursday nights. All landscaping is done Desert Enviroscaping with a couple man made fountains and fire pits for decor.
Some cullture would be nice but let's make sure it fits the area. A canal or riverwalk does not! | | "The jouney of life is as much in oneself' as the roads one travels"
