The Monitor reporting to promote a Riverwalk in Copa calling it "Main Street Maricopa". Cool idea.

The concept is good, but I would prefer a dry riverbed walk. Creating a man-made “river is a horrible idea. We are heading for big trouble with our water use as it is. Creating a new way to waste it is shameful and irresponsible. Add the fact that will also turn into a mosquito breeding facility and it is also a health risk. The people who conjured this are having a tough time understanding the difference between what we can do versus what we should do.

I think your thoughts are a little backwards. In a dry river bed any sort of rain fall or drainage water would become standing water which is where mesquitos breed. If the city made a river walk it would have to be similar to a canal (to prevent erosion) and have the water circulating to create a current. The moving water and concrete sides would eliminate any pockets of standing water therebye preventing mequitos from breeding.

The water used could be reclaimed water which is currently sold as irrigation or dumped into the Salt River West of Phoenix. This water is as clean as tap water but can not be sold as consumable due to where it originats from.

A better arguement is where would the money come from to pay for such a thing and where is it proposed?? If they try to finance it with tax payers dollars than no way- there are plenty of other things that need to be fixed, upgraded, or placed in this community before something like this. I do not see any area that currently would serve as an ideal location or benefit from such a project.

If some developer is coming in and building a marketplace area with shopping, restaraunts, maybe the rumored movie theatre, and this "riverwalk" would be part of that area- than it may be a neat idea.

Only if it done without tax payer dollars though!!

You bring up good points, but I disagree on several. The canal river likely won’t flow fast enough to prevent mosquitoes from breeding in the slow moving areas and there will always be some of those. As for the effluent, wasted water is wasted water. The evaporation from this canal will be wasteful. That reclaimed water should be pumped back into the ground to recharge the groundwater, or used to irrigate crops. If the development was built around an existing creek bed then rainwater is less likely to stand for any period of time. Natural features tend to drain better than anything a civil engineer will create. Sure, there will be puddles, but those happen anyway.

As long as I’m up on my soapbox, I’ll comment on all those nice grassy common areas around most of the cluster-home developments in the city. Those big green areas are a wonderful place for mosquitoes to breed. Take a walk across one just at dusk and see what I mean. The grass looks pretty, but wastes water, increases the mosquito population, and is civically irresponsible in a time when the southwest is in a serious drought condition. I don’t understand promoting landscaping that increases the mosquito count, then having somebody driving through town all night spraying poison in the air. Getting away from that was one of the reasons I moved out here eight years ago.

It would be nice to see something unique in Maricopa and not just another see of strip malls and "power centers".

Thanks,

Trust me, any developer that would build something like this would want an huge hand out (tax breaks) to build it.

Thanks,
Higgs

It's no surprise that they would approve it, they approved the ethanol plant didn't they? Those require huge amounts of water.

I have read and understood the posting on this thread and have nothing to add.

Just doing it one day at a time. Change is good and it should be looked upon as an improvment! not a problem.

OK.. reading other threads...

I like the Idea.. but I don't like the fact that there's some Sly Backwards acts going on. this would be a great project if there were not any Council members benefiting from it.

Can't we ever get anything done in this city without a council member benifiting from it? If this is the case. GET THEM THE HECK OFF THOSE SEATS AND PUT AN ADVERAGE JOE on that seat!! Someone who has no ties to the big business growth in the area. Atleast then we can say that the vote for improvement wasn't TANiITED!!

I think that this idea is really kind of out of place here.

They built the Riverwalk in San Antonio, TX and it has been a big plus for the city. People come from all over to see the Riverwalk and the Alamo. I was in San Antonio in 1982 and then again in 2005. What a difference 23 years made. There is now a shopping Mall by the walk, as well as several restaurants. Tourists come just to ride the boats around and spend the entire day around the walk.
Now, if we can only get something like the Alamo to put near it.

Maybe we can build a dome stadium like the Alamodome too and get a college bowl game. If we add a layer of corruption I'm sure we can get it all done.

The main difference is in San Antonio that's a real river.

The Sonoran Desert is a beutiful place, we don't need to pretend we are something we are not.

it's all gonna become a reality, for most, that this city is not going to progress as well it should be b/c there's too much conflict of interest awaiting to be brought up.

i don't like people who uses "signature" on their profile. TAKE IT OFF!!!
