Okay, my husband spoke to the city planner a few minutes ago.

An annoucement re: McDonalds is supposed to come in a few days.

Walmart is scheduled for the first quarter of 2009 and a movie theatre is to go in on the same site.  I guess Walmart was a little upset because Maricopians were saying we wanted a Target instead of Walmart.  While this may be true for some, any shopping will be welcome!

Ruby Tuesday is still slated to open. While Moutainside Fitness (as we know) as bowed out until a later date.

She said to go to http://www.maricopamatters.com/ and complete the survey. That they are looking to this online survey as a source for community needs.

I forgot to say that the bridge on Honeycutt is up for bid right now. The bids end on April 30 and then (hopefully0 sometime after that, construction should begin.

I sure wish that Target had paid more attention to the Maricopians saying they preferred a Target...maybe we could have secured one? Oh well, some shopping is better than no shopping I guess.

A movie theatre??? Oh, praise all that is holy! Please, please, please build here!! Driving to Ahwatukee every weekend just gets so... old.

It'll end up being Harkins, probably a 12 or 14-plex.

I want Wal-mart to open so that I don't have to spend 2 hours at Fry's picking up a few things. The more people that go to Wal-mart the nicer it will be at all the other stores in town.

Not going to be a Harkins.  It's from an out of town company looking to get into the metro Phoenix market.  They have about 6 other theaters planned over the next few years.  I can't give the name of the company, but I know who they are as my friend did all the land deals.  As for when, it's defintely 2009, shooting for the first half of the year.

Not a Harkins? Maricopa is not the right city to use as a test market for a small theatre chain trying to get their foot in the door. The small chains in Arizona either went out of business (Madstone) or got bought out by another company (United Artists). The only small chains that have had relatively small success are the dollar theatres, but even those change ownership every couple of years.

Do they have 6 other theatres planned overall, or just in the metro Phoenix area? Harkins has the majority foothold in the Phoenix market (consistently growing stronger), with AMC bringing up a distant second. Even AMC has conceded the market to Harkins, and will no longer build theatres here. Westgate doesn't really count, since it was going to be a Loews which turned into an AMC when AMC bought them out.

So unless this out of town company is actually another large chain from out of state, I really don't think they know what they're getting into. Phoenix is a very tough market to compete in.

It's really hard to believe anyone now a days.  Kind of like the little boy who cried wolf story.

The ones that come on here with BS information has made it really difficult to believe anything anymore.   Guess they live off of the reaction that they can get from people.

So the "I'll believe it when I see it" attitude unfortunately is very true now.  I like it before when we didn't have that and information that was given was correct.

Guess those days are gone.

My brother is the head of Training for Harkins theaters...as of last week when I brought it up to him he had heard nothing of any plans for Harkins to open in Maricopa.  Harkins is always looking to expand in the valley and they do look at all locations, they are very strategic in their locations so dont rule out Maricopa being a choice for them in the future. I'll keep asking him to keep an ear open.
