Alert | | At least it will be something local to avoid the drive into town when you really need something you dont have to pay the high prices for non grocery items at the groceries stores. | | I am enough of an artist to draw freely upon my imagination. Alert | | I will not shop at Wal Mart, I have Wal Mart issues. Having said that, I think it would be good for the local economy.

Alert | I don't know about being good for the local economy. It would certainly boost the local economy - there would be money changing hands and more people employed. There would be local sales tax that is now going to Casa Grande or Chandler.
However, Wal-Mart would provide tons of jobs that don't pay a living wage. They would employ people who's only access to healthcare is through the state. Maybe if these jobs were supplimental income for a family, that could be a good thing. Usually, they are the primary source of income for the workers.
I hate the cheap products. Much of the stuff that's sold there is substandard junk that's made in China under conditions that would be criminal in the United States. I shop there sometimes, but I don't enjoy the experience and I feel dirty afterwards.

Alert | | Interesting viewpoint, DD, and one that had not previously occurred to me. I often shop at Wal-Mart for non-grocery items. Your comments will serve to make me rethink shopping there, at least for items that are not well-known brand names. | | Chris Thudium "If you look for the bad in people expecting to find it, you surely will." Alert | | wal-mart historically went in to crush the little guy in the small towns and take over. They have laxed in that mentality, however they still need someone outside of wal-mart to put the pressure ON wal-mart. If Wal-Mart comes in the "lower prices" will be lower than most places in town forcing bashas and fry's to cut prices on essential items. But on non essential items wal-mart will have somewhat of a monoply in this town due to pure buying power and they will make us pay more for a "bike" than the wal-mart store in chandler would make us pay for the same bike due to the lack of big volume competition in this town. OUTSIDE that I WANT HOME DEPOT, Ace's prices are killing me! | | it takes a village to raise a child, and I don't mean the villages at Rancho El Dorado

Alert | | I'm in that same boat....I really don't care WHAT they bring in town, but we need SOMETHING! Super Target..fine; Super Walmart...fine. Sams..Costco..... Whatever! Hell, even one more grocery store - Albertsons? Albertson's usually has awesome sales 10/10's, for example. <img src='http://www.85239.com/desktopmodules/ntforums/images/emoticons/smile.gif' height='20' width='20' border='0' title='Smile' align='absmiddle'>

WHAT!!!! I have never seen prices on a particular item higher in smaller town Wal-Marts next to the big town. I went into the Page Wal- Mart and paid the same price for Tylenol their that I pay in Chandler. When you see their adds or commercials, those are for everybody, not just Casa Grande, or Chandler. Do yourself a favor and call a small town Wal-Mart and ask them how much a bike costs, and then call the biggest city you can think of and do the same. Or better yet, go to their web site. Let me know if the small print says to add $35 if you live in a small town.
Also, for anyone new, Wal-Mart is being built at MCG Highway and Porter Rd. If you dont want to shop there, please dont because I hate crowds.

Alert | Wal Mart DOES have different prices in different stores. A while back one of the news channels (I don't remember which one) wanted to find out if the different stores around the valley had the same, or different, prices. They found out that there were most definitely different prices at different stores.
The sales avertised are different (although if your talking about around the country, they may have different sales). If it's an advertised sales, stores in the same areas will have the same sale price. But on the non sale items, there are differences - maybe the Page store and the Chandler store have the same price for Tylenol, but that doesn't mean that their prices are the same for everything. Based on the news story, it was more about the demographics of the population than the size of the city. In say the Scottsdale area, the prices were less than a Phoenix store because the people who live in Scottsdale are more likely to shop around for the better price than the people who lived in the part of Phoenix that the Phoenix store was in. I don't remember what the locations of the stores were that they checked, but they did this for both WalMart and Target and found the same types of results for both - they base pricing on the demographics - the neighborhoods where people have the 'shop around' mentality, get the better prices was the conclusion of the news investigation. So, if they look at the demographics and that shows them that people in Maricopa will drive into the bigger cities to get better prices, they'll have better prices, if they believe that we will pay a little more for the convenience of not having to drive so far, they'll charge us a little more.

Alert | | I do not and will not shop at Wal-Mart. Not only to they treat their employees poorly (low wages, no benefits, etc), From experience that my husband's company has had (and I'm sure it wasn't an isolated thing) they also treat their vendors poorly. Hubby's company has asked us not to go there, and I agree 100%. Everything you can get there, you can get somewhere with higher standards of business practice. And using smart shopping you can often get grocery items cheaper than what walmart can offer anyway. My 2 cents | | If you can't spot the loser, it might be you

Alert | | ok Tigg, thats news to me. I wont believe it until I see it. I travel all over with my job, and I must not be paying too close attention. Im not going to say you're wrong, I just need more proof to believe they could change prices on items. I could see items being different, but not prices.

Alert | From the WalMart website
Are the prices online the same as store prices?
We strive to provide you with the lowest prices possible on Walmart.com as well as in our stores. However, sometimes a price online does not match the price in a store. In our effort to be the lowest price provider in your particular geographic region, store pricing will sometimes differ from online prices. Our local stores do not honor Walmart.com pricing or competitor advertisements from outside of a store's local trade territory.
