Alert | I think we might be in more trouble that I thought earlier!!! Did you know that a typical dairy herd produces 32.77 tons of solid manure per milk cow per year. Given the number of cows in the Big Cow factories, I would say Maricopa is easily producing 100,000+ tons of cow fecal matter a year. Now the argument that Big Cow has made in these very forums is that this cow poop is not bad for drinking water. They will tell you that the ground can magically filter out 100,000 tons of raw cow sewage a year before it becomes your drinking water. Do you honestly believe that?
Now some of you love cow smell and I solute you for that love. Some of you claim the chicken factory smell is like rosebuds to your nose. However, most humans are genetically programmed at birth to think cow, chicken, or human waste is a foul smell that they don't want surrounding their homes.
I will tell you right now that we are on a dangerous cessepool of potential disease and odor. On top of that, the cows are producing gas... in other words, if it isn't bad enough that a single cow produces more than enough poop and other waste to fill a swimming pool each year, they are also farting out tons of toxic gas that some of you cannot get enough of.

Alert | A couple of questions for you Denna:
1) Have you researched what EPA regulations are in place to minimize environmental impact/prevent environmental damage from dairy farming?
2) If so, do you have hard evidence that the farms around here are out of compliance with those regulations?
I'm not asking sarcastically; if there is a violation here, it is certainly something that should be addressed, but I want to know what the violation is.
I, for one, am not fully educated on the EPA regulations and what is typically done to ensure that folks living near dairy farms are not harmed by them, and I would want to know whether or not our farms are abiding by those rules.
Have you done any specific research on this? For example, you imply above that the farms are putting fecal matter, etc. directly into unlined pits. Have you verified that this is happening? I would think it would be a voilation of federal and/or state environmental laws if it is. I think that others disagreeing with you aren't saying that tons of cow poop going directly into your drinking water is ok, but that this isn't what actually is happening. By saying that people don't care at all or love pollution, you're building up a straw man rather than actually listening to what others are saying.
If there is an environmental hazard here due to farms dumping excrement directly into our water supplies in violation of all environmental laws, I would certainly want to do something about this, as I think a lot of folks living here would. But being an analytic kind of guy, I'd first want to have and examine the specific evidence that this is what's happening (if it is).

Alert | I agree that both the cow poop and chicken feed smell is very bad for our health and it is often downplayed here as just something to have to get used to. I am in the healthcare field and I can tell you that what we are breathing in are a ton of pollutants. I heard it somewhere that the EPA has formally declared the air in maricopa unsafe but i have to follow up with that "rumor" and find out if it is indeed true. If it is true, I agree that action must be taken, but in a systematic and non aggressive manner and lots of calls and letters will need to be sent to those in power to make changes to this and perhaps a petition signed by many maricopa residents.
I feel sad I can't enjoy my backyard on many nights because of the smell and I don't have the "just live with it" attitude, but I also believe if we want change, we have to do it in a way that will be strategic and get results.

Alert | | When you purchased a house a short distance from 1,000s of cows, WHAT DID YOU EXPECT!!! You are like the people who move near an airport then complain about the noise from the aircraft. You moved to the cows, they did not move to you.

Denna, Denna, Denna... The ground does not filter out cow poop. Cow poop is a surface issue. Cow urine, mixed with small amounts of fecal material is what seeps (and is filtered) into the ground. Cow poop is a profit center to cattle and dairy operations. Have you noticed at the dairies the giant 100 yard Hefty bags? Those are composting the manure. It's inside a bag - not left lying around. If it's inside a bag - it isn't contaminating anything. They also use anaerobic digesters to process compost. (They look like silos - no one creates silage in Arizona) The end product of the solid waste goes to companies such as Hyponex for fertilizer, potting soil etc.
Dairies keep the pens VERY clean and pick up manure daily. Happy cows give more milk. It's a matter of economics for them. No manure = no flies, no odors, no cows lying in caca, no giving cows complete baths daily before milking (you still wash the udder region).
Feedlots are not as particular about cleanliness - true. But they still contain the manure because they can sell it. It's money. Why let it lie around, breaking down in the wind, sun and elements when you can scrape it up, put it in dump trucks and sell it.
Yes, cattle operations contaminate groundwater. The ammonia in the urine, and nitrogen from the fecal material combine with naturally occurring elements in the soil to create the ammonium nitrate that contaminates the groundwater. This also occurs from waste water treatment facilities, septic systems and fertilizers used on farms, golf courses, backyards etc to create the nitrates/nitrites that are worrisome in groundwater.
Yes, cattle operations contribute VOCs (volatile organic compounds) and particulates that affect air quality. VOCs are gaseous chemical compounds created from many sources - including new home construction and are not limited to cattle. Particulates are created from the animals walking around. Trucks water the pens to limit the dust - but some is still released.
And yes, there are operations that exceed what their permits allow. Notice that word - permits. You can check online at both www.azdeq.gov and www.epa.gov for search for the permits. They are monitored regularly and fined accordingly. I don't have time to check right now - but I thought that Pinal County at one time had an air quality monitor at Maricopa Feeds. I don't know if they removed that machine or relocated it.
Maricopa COUNTY exceeds Federal air quality limits regularly. Pinal County is on the cusp. Cars, construction, open space with blowing dust all contribute to the problem - not just the cows.

Alert | I wasn't complaining at all. I just want people to stop complaining about every little thing. If it isn't the cow smell I am sure they would find something else to whine about so you are right - $5 for the whiners to move is definitely a better idea. We are 1 mile from the cow farm and it isn't that bad! You just deal with it!!!
