Slower market means less incentive to open? Uh, that makes no economic sense at all. The quicker you open a business, the quicker you have cash coming in to pay for the opening of the business, and the faster you reach the point of operating in the black.</div>

Actually, it makes perfect sense for larger companies. In a recessionary market where there isn't much money lying around to be spent, it does not behoove a company to pay extra to finish a building job quickly. Entering a market under tight financial conditions merely means you'll be open for business when nobody's got extra money to spend at your store. If you can pay less to a construction company to operate slowly with half the normal crew, you are saving money on that avenue, and are essentially delaying the opening of your store until the market begins to correct itself. The gamble is that the market will have turned around by the time your store opens, so you are able to show a very strong earnings at a new store...which is always welcome news at the Board of Directors meeting.

WalMart isn't a small entity, which would have nothing to gain by sitting closed and delaying its opening, while watching customers pass it by. Instead, it is a mammoth corporation whose earnings-per-share rely on reports of income per store, and of new store performance. They don't need to rush into a market to get more money to force them into the black...they've got more money than they can spend as it is. ;-)

I like the customers at Target, better than Walmart.
Target is cleaner and has a better selection of the things I'm looking for.

Plus, the product design that Target has is way better.</div>

Exactly how are the customers at Target "better"?

Well, how can I put it in a nice way, without getting chewed out for being honest??

Let's just say the clientel that I have seen at Walmarts and Targets across this wonderful nation of ours differs. By differ, I mean the customers that tend to shop at Target have a little more money in their pockets than those that shop at Walmart.

I shop at both stores, and when the budget is tight, I'll go to Walmart.

Put 2 +2 together and you'll no longer need me to express my bias.

Thanks for asking and I hope this answers your question.

Its sad that you equate being 'better' with "HAVING A LITTLE MORE MONEY IN THEIR POCKETS".

It did answer my question.

Good to know your point of view on people less fortunate than yourself.

To be fair to drummer he never said people "having a little more money in their pockets" were better. The word better was used earlier in the thread.

You tend to see it all at Wal-mart. Everybody from the trashy to the normal to the absolute unusual. For some reason, bratty children tend to take up most of Wal-mart.
I don't have a problem with either, I think Walmart offers more and has more locations, plus their super wally worlds are open 24/7 (for a lot of their locations).

I like Target because, for some reason...I could always find a good parking spot, the store is a lot cleaner, and their check outs are really fast and smooth. There is always someone that could help you at target and I never feel rushed or crowded when I'm there.

Like I said, I like them both.....but I have to agree with Drummer (which, I rarely do) the demographics in regards to socioeconomics and the people who choose to go to one location or the other....is present and one would have to be blind to not take a notice of the difference.

I came very close to being shot at Wal-Mart. That has never happened to me at Target. It was a nicer Wal-Mart too. The products at Target tend to last longer and therefore my money actually goes farther at Target. However, Wal-Mart has come in handy in an emergency in the middle of the night.

I'll second that. The only problem I have with wally world is how they put local businnesses out of business. When I was in college a walmart came in and made their prices ridiculous low until 2 out of 3 grocery stores closed. They did the same to an alco, and to a local target type store. Then within 2 months many prices went up by over a dollar. I specifically remember milk went up like 1.10 more a gallon. I just don't like that. I've never seen a supertarget do that. But hey when I need a gatorade, some oranges and a new pair of sandals at 3 am there's no place better.

Funny, I have witnessed shoplifting, a gang fight, and vandalism at Target. I think the stuff happens all over. People tend to only go with what they have seen, and assume that if they haven't seen it at a particular site then it must not occur.

As I have said before, Target is just a Walmart with a better PR man.

BTW, drummer said put two and two together, and if you count his earlier post and aggregate his opinon, he was saying "better" in terms of Target customers with more money in their pocket.

What Target did you see the gang fights at?

Shoplifting and vandalism happens among all people of any economic status.

Walmart is a great place to get batteries or underwear.

But, if you want something that has a little more modern look, you have to go to Target.

I worked just down the street from the Wal-Mart they put up on Baseline between Country Club and Mesa. It seemed to take about four months from the time they started walls to opening. It took longer to prep the site, put in utilities, and pave the parking lot. THEN they brought in all the building materials for the store itself. I expect about the same for ours. I would be very surprised if that store isn't open well before Christmas.
Now, if they will just get Bowlin road opened up and over across to MCG Hwy...It's going to be hell to travel over 347 from south of the tracks. At least until the road realignment, the Union Pacific Double tracking and all the myriad other promised traffic improvements in that corner.
