I'm really getting annoyed by all this he said/she said rubbish. I'd rather have a Target there anyway.</div>
FYI, in terms of Walmart's 'exploitation of 3rd world countries,' etc., Target is really no different from Walmart. The groups criticizing Walmart will openly say there's no evidence whatsoever that Target's policies towards employees, pay, etc. (or for that matter those of most big-box companies) are any better than/different from Walmart's, but that Walmart is logically the best target of the big-box companies to go after because they are the largest retailer in the country. The cost savings that you get in either a Target or Walmart have to come from somewhere, and it's from the same place. If you prefer Target for other reasons, that's a different story...</div>

I like the customers at Target, better than Walmart.
Target is cleaner and has a better selection of the things I'm looking for.

Plus, the product design that Target has is way better.

Hooray Hooray! I'm just excited that any place is coming at all. Husband and I bought in Maricopa 3 years ago and have lived here for 2 years (stupid house took a year to be built). In the last three years a lot has changed, but I for one will be happy to avoid the drive to Ahwatukee/Chandler to visit Wal-Mart/Target. I am also really excited about QT and Teakwoods, lol.

There is progress at the Walmart site, Porter road is comming along and several Traffic lights are up. It's comming. I personally like Target better, but it's progress. I could just imagine the traffic mess it will cause at MCG hwy going into John Wayne Pkw.
It's going to be a mess if you're trying to make a left hand turn to go south of the tracks.

Yes, the drive into "town" to go shopping really bites.
Although I don't really enjoy going to Walmart,I'm willing to swallow my pride(and only pride) and shop there.

Those that are against Walmart, will be there too shopping and saving some gas.

Yes, I also think that Target has a nicer selection. In terms of the customers, in this case I think you'd be getting the same thing either way--Maricopans avoiding the drive into Tukee or Chandler. Maybe we'll eventually have both.

The construction crews have begun working on intersection improvements in front of the Walmart site. There appear to be two separate entrances now, each with its own traffic light. There is also a traffic light assembly going up at the Porter Rd intersection, and grading has been done next to Maricopa-Casa Grande Highway in preparation for what look to be additional lanes west of Porter Road.

So things are starting to look different, even if there aren't any signs of building going on just yet.

Awesome, GilaGuy I live in VRED, so I really should just go take a drive down there to see what is going on. Walmart is going to be awesome for a multitude of reasons. I understand that there are those who dislike the practices of the company, and I too have been to a Wal-Mart and been a little worried about toddlers running around the store in diapers with no shoes on. However, think of all the people it takes to run a Wal-Mart!! This is going to bring a lot of jobs to Maricopa. Plus, all of the other retail/restaurants that come after Wal-Mart will bring additional jobs, too.

I for one am tired of Fry's. I love the store, but it seems like I can never run in quickly for a small item and not wait in line for a century. I went in Saturday night (after 7pm) and there were lines forming all the way up the aisles! It was crazy! If I am going to wait in line in a crowded store, I would rather do it at Wal-Mart and save a few bucks.

So - yeah, boo Wal-Mart, but HOORAY Wal-Mart all at the same time. I am looking forward to the new store! I'm also hoping that it is one of those Super-Duper Wal-Marts with a grocery store, an oil&lube and a tire store, lol.

I really would like to shop at Target myself. if my GF and I NEED to go to Walmart, we usually drive to the one in Gilbert off the 202. Sure we pass about 2 closer stores, but the headache is unbearable in those 2 strores, including the Arizona Ave location.
BUT..I'm glad they are progressing on the location here in Maricopa. I just hope that they hold HIGH standards for employees and service. I cant stand being rang up by a female cashier wearing a "wife beater" shirt (yes it has happend!) or the guy getting carts with his pants around his ankles....NOT A GOOD LOOK!

I noticed that also. Hard to believe they're doing that. WalMart probably won't open until 2010 I'm told.

I'd be surprised if it took that long. I'm not sure I believe the "mid-late 2008" projections either, mind you, but at the rate they're going they'll have completed the thing in about a year.

Some of the earlier residents of New Maricopa will remember what the Basha's shopping center looked like in about May of 2004. That's just a little bit ahead of what the WalMart site looks like right now. Factor in a slower market (which means less incentive to rush the job and open up) and you can do the math... :-)

Slower market means less incentive to open? Uh, that makes no economic sense at all. The quicker you open a business, the quicker you have cash coming in to pay for the opening of the business, and the faster you reach the point of operating in the black.

On the contrary, WalMart wants to open asap. They've made the investment, now they need customers to start making money. As for how long it will take them to open, I'll be shocked if they don't open by November, early December. That's WAY too big a portion of a stores sales for the year to miss, as much as 40% of their business for the whole year.

Afterall, the building is pretty much nothing more than a huge warehouse that's been spruced up a bit. It's not a complicated structure at all, and WalMart has done it hundreds of times. All the property prep will take longer than actually putting up the structure and stocking it.

They'll be open for next Christmas I have no doubt at all.

Where I grew up in Wisconsin, they put up a Walmart 10 years ago in a town of less than 3000 people. Two years ago, they built a super Walmart right next to it. The town is still far less than 3000 people, and the entire county (917 sq miles) doesn't even have 45000 people in it. Walmart will open when they want to, where they want to (unless people protest it).

Yes, that's really my name

According to Godsey's website,

He called the corporate offices and they told him 2010 for completion. HEY, at least the guy called to find out.

Oh yeah.. if you want an Airport vote for Smith.... he is a "Good ole Boy" as far as I know.

Just doing it one day at a time. Change is good and it should be looked upon as an improvment! not a problem.

That's got to be the stupidest thing I've read all day. People can't drive? Unless it costs under 5 bucks to fly, then it isn't worth it.
