I don't know who said Wal-Mart won't be done until 2011 but it does not take 3 years to put up a Wal-Mart. The faster they do it the faster they make money, and they love making money.

Someone (on local govt level) told my husband today that Walmart backed out due to the huge part of road imporovements they were required to pay for. In this slow market they didn't feel like they needed to be here bad enough.

I'm really getting annoyed by all this he said/she said rubbish. I'd rather have a Target there anyway.

That's interesting, since the construction crews are still out there pushing dirt around, creating driveways and opening up an area for a parking lot right now. I'm not sure where this information came from, but a simple look will show that there's definitely somethin' going on over there...and personally I don't believe WalMart would "back out" of the opportunity to be the first "big box" store here. That doesn't match their business model.

You know, I've seen the "slow market" referenced repeatedly as a reason for Wal-Mart and other big stores to delay or abandon plans to build here. I used to live in a small town in southwest Missouri of 40,000 which had three Wal-Marts. There are many more towns throughout the nation of 10-12,000 people who have one Wal-Mart. Maricopa is 30,000+. The only reason we don't have one already is because Maricopa has grown so fast, it just takes time for large corporations to identify, prioritize and plan for it. Even if all growth stops completely, we would still be getting a Wal-mart as well as many more new businesses. There are simply too many people here, and they will come whether people want them to or not . . . and most people want them to anyway.

What my husband heard is that Home Depot is still on, but Walmart backed out. I don't know, I'm just saying what he was told.

Yes. Wallyworld is coming to Maricopa. Yes. They broke ground on the NW corner of Porter and HWY 238. And I dont believe Home Depot has signed on yet, Lowes is also entertaining the idea. There will be a lot of other shops and it is also to include walking paths around the facility and to the outlining northern home subdivisions. Maricopa is hoping that this location pulls traffic off of the 347. Kinda smart I think. Not a big fan of Wallyworld, but others are. Good for the growth of Maricopa.

I drove by today and its definitely coming. There was a story awhile back that said Home Depot is coming as well. I wouldn't be surprised if it mimicks other similar developments with other places like IHOP and what not connected. They need to do that area right because thats a big chunk of land.

If that's an honest hope that they have, then they'd better hop to it with some widening of Maricopa-Casa Grande Highway. <img src='http://www.85239.com/desktopmodules/ntforums/images/emoticons/wink.gif' height='20' width='20' border='0' title='Wink' align='absmiddle'>

Actually I believe the additional traffic is likely to come from Porter Rd rather than Casa Grande Hwy. As Porter Rd will connect Walmart to RED, VRED, Homestead, Tortosa, Glennwilde, Rancho Mirage, and countless other communities.

I am very excited to have all these stored within five minutes of my house.

They will make Maricopa more attractive to buy in, too.

Well golly heck, back home in a little ole town of 3,500 people called Ballinger, TX they had a Walmart (how's that for trailer trash talk?). Not a Super Walmart, but still. Another town, San Angelo, had 80,000 and they had two Super Walmarts and a Target... I wouldn't think if this talk even is true that that would be the reason for them pulling out.

FYI, in terms of Walmart's 'exploitation of 3rd world countries,' etc., Target is really no different from Walmart. The groups criticizing Walmart will openly say there's no evidence whatsoever that Target's policies towards employees, pay, etc. (or for that matter those of most big-box companies) are any better than/different from Walmart's, but that Walmart is logically the best target of the big-box companies to go after because they are the largest retailer in the country. The cost savings that you get in either a Target or Walmart have to come from somewhere, and it's from the same place. If you prefer Target for other reasons, that's a different story...
