Alert | whatever WE want it to be as long as WE get involved. I am new here and attended my first city council meeting a couple of weeks ago. With all the complaining on this forum I was shocked to see only a handful or residents there. The rest were city employess there for fund appropriations and the uh... cough... "media".
I was involved at the commitee level in a previous city we lived. We did get things done / changed, red tape and all.
Even a fresh new leadership will stumble without strong direction from the people. Make it a priority to get involved, I know I am.

Have a great day!

Alert | Exactly. Instead of everyone complaining about the govt in Maricopa only doing what works best for them, get out there and vote to get them out of their office. Run for city council so you can be heard. Complaining on here about how things need to change, doesn't do a lot of good, when you should be complaining to the mayor's office or voting him out of office.
I have never seen so many people complain about things not being built up ever. Maybe because where I grew up in PA, we were very similiar to Maricopa, where for the majority of things, we had to drive 20 miles to Lancaster, but we had what we immediately needed in town (bank, grocery store, pizza place, video store).
Every person who moved to Maricopa came to this city knowing that there was only Frys and Bashas and every pizza place known to man (except Papa Johns) here. That if you needed Walmart or Target or a place to eat that was a family restaurant or you needed home stuff, you had to drive 25-30 miles. Even if a builder told anyone, oh, this is coming or that's coming, we all needed to do our own research. We were told a golf course would be coming to Tortosa, did my research, no such thing is in the works.
Maricopa will only be as good or as bad as the residents let it be. If you only come online and complain to people, then, it's great you have an opinion, but instead, complain to the people who actually can do something.
I admit, I hate my drive to North Phoenix, I hate the 347, but I knew moving here, that was my only option and would be my only option for many, many years to come.
Again, Maricopa will be great, but only if we work together to make it great, instead of complaining about the negative, it's time to think of the positives or work to fix the negatives.

Wrong......until the 347 is either expanded, or an alternate route is added, this city will not flourish. I'm pretty sure that our city council has no answer for this dilemma. On one hand, we want to attract more people down here. But with that, we're going to have nightmare commutes that will keep people from ever wanting to do that. Please tell me how I can get involved to solve this one??

They were all stuck in the traffic coming home on the 347.

Alert | To charann and java, It is great to see like-minded people like yourselves on the board. That is awesome!
Lano, You asked: Please tell me how I can get involved to solve this one??
Excellent question! If transportation is an issue that means a lot to you, might I suggest getting involved with the The City of Maricopa Planning and Zoning Commission and / or the Public Works Committee.
Please see: http://www.cityofmaricopa.net/city_mgmnt/CCB.htm
It is people like you that will make a difference! Thank you.
Caveman, Very funny. Highly doubtful.

Wrong again....this agency has nothing to do with the 347. Our city has to rely on other groups to step up and help us grow. They are ADOT, Gila River and the Union Pac. Railroad. So we can get involved locally till the cows come home, without the proper infrastracture, we're screwed. I totally love your positive thinking Evil Spock, I just wish it were that easy.

Alert | Lano, You are correct. The city of Maricopa, or any city is at the mercy of many external forces. ADOT's State Transportation Board is who the city planning commissions need to appeal to. The State Transportation Board has Federal guidelines to adhere to. There is much more involved than somebody saying we need more roads coming in to our town. We have a unique situation with the Reservation and the railroad to be sure. Does that mean we through up our hands and say forget it?
You can call me wrong and wrong again over and over and come up with millions of reasons why being involved is a waste of time. That will certainly get us nowhere.
I never said I had all the answers. There is power in a group of indiviuals when each have specific knowledge which is then combined into a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. You seem to have researched these things and have concerns or you would not be on this section of the forum. I would enjoy sitting down over a cold drink and "pick your brain" as they say. If interested please sent me a PM.
Does anyone know, is there a "Concerned Citizens for Maricopa" type of group?

Alert | | Evilspock......it may not seem like it, but I'm totally on your side. I just hope that at the very least, we get some enforcement on that road, so our families are a little safer. Great idea on the citizens group!

Alert | A couple of things need to be done quickly to make this town easier to reach during high commute hours, unfortunately we dont have much pull on getting things done down here, historically Maricopa has been sort of a bastard town south of 'THE VALLEY'.
1. Remove the damn lights on the 347. No amount of reasons will make me change my mind on this, it needs to be treated as a freeway, not a country road. If others need to have access to the 347 they should be required to put in overpasses as needed. Shutting down the 347 every morning so that the rock yard can have its own light....Jesus that makes me mad every morning.
2. Although the process to build this may be much more difficult coming into Phoenix on the 347 because of the construction logistics, the outgoing exit to Queen Creek/347 needs to be a connection or interchange, there is no reason why that couldnt be done very easily and cheaply immediately, lay some concrete and make it a connection instead of an offramp going down to Maricopa.
3. Paint lane lines on that section of the 10 that is already laid there, three lanes could be extended almost to the 347 on ramp to the 10 without doing anything but laying the lines over there to the left, the room is ovbiously there for another lane.
Basically the 347 needs to be a continuation of 'The Valley's' loop freeway system.
