DD, you had to bring up the taking shopping carts home, that annoys the hell out of me. look, we all know that certain business brings certain people: walmart, fc, or whatever, i'll shop at these stores just as long as they are not near where i live. i'll pay a lil xtra $ for any store than can hire more employees to keep the store clean.

imo, if you see a shopping cart near your home, that's a first sign of something to come, if you know what i mean LOL

i don't like people who uses "signature" on their profile. TAKE IT OFF!!!

I agree with charann, DD, and riki. I know that not all stores smell like roses. I've been in trashy Walmarts before, but never have I seen one in as bad of shape as the FC's I've been in. I'm sure they aren't all that way. I'm not saying they are. I'm just saying the 2 I've been in makes me no longer want to be in anymore. Do you really think that Eddie Bashas ever steps foot into any of the FC's? I doubt it cause if he did they wouldn't look or smell like that. I've seen his home in Chandler and it's HUGE! You know he buys only the best and that his kids get whatever they want. This is what bugs me. He puts these less than desirable stores up but who wants to bet that he wouldn't be caught dead in one? I grew up in Mesa. At the time it was a nice area, and there was a really nice Bashas that my mom was a frequent customer of. Then as Mesa grew and people started moving out east (my family did that) and then the part that I grew up in went downhill real fast. The nice Bashas was turned into a FC. Eddie Bashas does that on purpose. He sees the need for a place for lower income families to shop cause he knows he'll make big bucks off it. He doesn't care if it looks like crap or not. There is no reason that any of them should be horrid looking or smelly. If they plan to bring one to town, then you can bet I'll be at the council meetings voicing my opinion.
I agree too that we will be more like Chandler or Gilbert when all is said and done around here. That's fine with me cause I love both places. I've lived both in Chandler and Gilbert and the areas I lived in were nice and no FC's were around where I lived at all. I don't think there are enough FC shoppers out here in the Copa yet and I'm crossing fingers that there won't ever be. I'll take any store over that. Nothing racist about that, I would just rather see something else come to town over a FC. You know that any store that is built here will be bright and clean when it first opens. I know the Walmart will be nice when it first opens, they always are, it is just up to the employees that work in these stores to keep them looking bright and clean. When a store isn't kept nice it will make property value go down. Who wants to buy a home near a store that has trash everywhere and smells of trash when they walk in? That is just a fact. That goes for any store that comes to town, not just FC, imo.

The French have a phrase, laissez-faire, which literally means, "let do" or let it be as it is. It's used to describe a free market economy in which demand defines the product quality and availability.

If someone is willing to shop in a smelly store with roaches patrolling the aisles, then so be it. In most suburban communities, there would be outrage and people would never go into that store again. They would drive somewhere else to shop, outside their community if necessary. In the communities where Food City exists, it seems to be accepted, so why would Bashas do anything different? Dressing the place up would just add to the cost and cause the prices to increase.

In the area where I work there is a Food City. Our company has put up several brand new buildings were we provide jobs for the community and try to alleviate some of the urban blight. Our buildings are sprayed with graffiti every day. We have had to install electric access gates on each of our parking lots to keep employees cars from being broken into. To some, cleanliness and aesthetics are not valued.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I have never ever seen a Food City that is not in a old already extablished building? Food City usually rents out space in cheap rather run down or less than desirable shopping centers. I really do not think Food City is going to build a brand new building to cater to the hispanic and lower income market. A new building would sky-rocket their normal operating costs and would eliminate much of the profit they make from renting or buying a much less expensive and non desirable property. Until we have a big enough hispanic, lower income market, and a location that will suit their needs I do not think any of us has anything to worry about.

I was just informed that a brand new Food City was built around 7th ave or 7th St and Southern? So I guess that there is at least 1 Food City that was put in a new building. However I still see the chances of one coming out to Maricopa very very slim, especially one in a new building.

you want to live free and clear of those who take shopping carts home with them, this is great, but the other day while I was on my way to Fry's, there was a lady pushing her cart load of groceries down Edison Rd. So by default, I guess The Villages are "Ghetto"
Look, I know what you are all trying to say, but you cant run from the fact that most of what you want to stay out of Maricopa is already here, or about to be. Lets just let it take its course. The best way to stop this issue is for the stores to Pony Up for those locking wheels once the cart gets to a certain point. Wal-Mart even uses that system.
For the record, I was also curious of the Food City rumors. So I emailed FC and their response was a possitive NO on coming to Maricopa. So everyone relax.

I went to a Food City in Mesa once -- I wouldn't want one in my backyard, either, but they do have yummy tortillas! -- and I was accosted by some men outside the door who tried to sell me a puppy. It couldn't have been more than six weeks old, and it was covered in flies and fleas and obviously had worms. I felt so sorry for the little guy, and for the rest of his siblings in their tattered cardboard box. Everytime I see a Food City now, I think of that pathetic little puppy.

well....I live in Tortorsa and there has been talk of the FC being built on the entrance to the community. I do NOT want FC put there!!! unfort. I have been to a few FC in my lifetime, and have not been impressed. Most of the locations are located in the "lower" parts of town but i did notice a new one in Glendale on 91st ave on my way to see a Cards game. Even still, I wouldnt go there.
I've done my share of shopping in Mexico at major grocery chains like Gigante, and the smell is the same. I believe its the cleaning products used (or not used).

I could not agree more with most of your comments about FC, it is quite a different experience going into one of their stores. They do smell, a combination of the detergent they use and food I believe, and that is enough reason for me not to shop there, no matter their savings. Not to mention the "atmosphere" in the store with screaming kids and blaring music. I am latina and have experience with grocery stores outside the US, and I will ALWAYS choose Fry's, Safeway or Bashas for my family's needs.

Actually the FC in Chandler has a large mexican food counter. Eddie sat at the table next to mine having dinner one night.

Food City's generally take over old Desert Markets or IGA's.

The only way they move out here is if they take over the old Dollar store. And that placed smelled bad...so perfect fit.

Let's put it this way... if you ever see a Food City in your neighborhood, put your house on the market immediatily and instruct your Realtor to take the first offer.

We total agree with you. LOL!!!!

the old dollar store is being torn down to widen honeycutt and expand the parking lot for the municipal complex. that is what the owner told me the day he found out he lost his lease. and yeah, i guess i'm ghetto cuz i used to shop there. all you people who expended so much energy putting me down for my DUI, i shopped there cuz it was the only place i could walk to comfortably, as you may recall, i didn't drive in maricopa til i got my license back. i am SUCH a horrible person!!!

Since you're into broad generalities:

We're not running away... it seems to me the people doing the running are the ones crossing the border.

Preservation of similar values in a neighborhood is human nature. Anyone of any race or culture is permitted and welcome to live where they like. It's just that if they live in Maricopa, they either shop at Bashas, Fry's or drive to Casa Grande to shop at Food City.

Nope to Food City!

Just doing it one day at a time. Change is good and it should be looked upon as an improvment! not a problem.
