Alert | | It seems like everyone on here has Orbitel. Why is it that no one is using Qwest? There website shows that at my address in Homestead that i am available to have Qwest choice cable. Has anyone looked into this? Is it true we can use something besides Orbitel?

Alert | | Word of warning, Qwest choice TV and online has not fared well out here. In Homestead I believe you can choose either Orbitel or Maricopa Broadband also.

This is garbage, I switched from Orbital 3 months ago because of there extremely slow internet connections. Orbital is only using a DS3 lines which is about 25 T1's. When you have as many households as Orbital has, this is extremely low. Orbitals bandwidth pipe really clogs between 4-8 PM. With Qwest I've always maintained a connection speed between 5-6000 mbps. Very internet purposes, until COX gets out here I would definitely recommend Qwest.

Alert | | This is the QWEST CHOIEC ONLINE service, their cable internet. Not their ADSL. Their ADSL is an awesome product. Their CABLE service is barely ever higher then 1.5meg which is what their choice ONLINE service is.

Alert | | and the other problems Orbitel has is that they dont have enough server power to push out their "broadband" phone service. Which is what bogs down their internet service.

I highly doubt Orbitel is operating off of a single DS3, or even a couple DS3s. DS3s provide 45 Mb/s. I checked with ARIN (American Registry of Internet Numbers) and Orbitel has 9744 IP Addresses assigned to them from AT&T.
216.9.176.0/20 - 4096 IPs 12.46.154.0/23 - 512 IPs 12.46.152.0/23 - 512 IPs 12.46.148.0/22 - 1024 IPs 12.46.147.0/24 - 256 IPs 12.46.146.0/24 - 256 IPs 12.159.73.0/24 - 256 IPs 12.46.144.0/23 - 512 IPs 12.159.74.0/23 - 512 IPs 12.159.72.0/24 - 256 IPs 12.10.216.0/29 - 8 IPs 12.10.223.0/24 - 256 IPs 12.10.220.0/23 - 512 IPs 12.152.68.72/29 - 8 IPs 12.152.82.0/23 - 512 IPs 12.152.70.0/24 - 256 IPs
Even if only 50% of these IPs are being used and they were oversubscribing users by 20 to 1, a single DS3 would only give each user 185Kb of bandwidth... just a bit higher than dial up. I sure as hell hope they know how to manage their network better than that. Of course it does concern me that all these IPs are provided by AT&T, which pretty much guarantees they have no backup carrier. They also do not have an AS Number assigned to them, which means they aren't running BGP and would likely need to redesign quite a bit of their network to bring in a back up carrier. | | "Knowledge is often mistaken for intelligence. Alert | | Well, our Qwest Internet has been great. I had Qwest for five or six years before moving to Maricopa and just finally changed back to Qwest after having Orbitel (blah). As far as TV goes, I thought Qwest used DirecTV? | | Just the good ol' boys, Never meanin' no harm, Beats all you've ever saw, been in trouble with the law since the day they was born.

Alert | I have their Choice Online/Choice TV service and have had NOOOOO problems with it. I also has to do with how far you are from the Central office, which I am not that far from. The further away, the weaker the signal.
I have three computers on a wireless system hooked up in the house and I still have a very strong signal.
Choice TV is also very good. I like how my called ID displays on the TV's. Also hardly ever has gone out in the 6 years that I have had it! Much more reliable than the Dish Network we used to have!! | | Who's using me, what should we do? Because you can't be a pimp and a prostitute too. - White Stripes

Alert | fragile_anatomy works for a computer hardware manufacturer. Sorry Bstone.
Hey Nicks if you have choice tv and online the speeds have nothing to do with the distance from the CO. its cable internet just like every other provider uses here in town.
The Qwest ADSL product is carried via the phone lines and this is what is affected by distance from the CO. Cable internet is affected by the number of people on at one time.
Oh and the reason why I have nothing bad to say about MBB is that when I DID have problems they fixed my issue, as opposed to qwest who promised me 3 meg guaranteed and never gave me more than 1.5 and then in return only credited one month when I paid for 5 months.
I regularly get between 6.5 and 8 meg down on my MBB connection even over a wireless connection.

Also, ken remember that orbitel has broadband phone service which requires an IP for every telephony device on their system. <img src='http://www.85239.com/desktopmodules/ntforums/images/emoticons/smile.gif' height='20' width='20' border='0' title='Smile' align='absmiddle'>
Thats why they have a block of 9744 ips..

Qwest does not, and has never, offered cable Internet or TV. You are referring to their VDSL service. You actually have more potential with VDSL, since it can go up to 52 Mbps down/12 up, whereas ADSL is limited to 8 Mbps down. Even if Qwest were to move up to ADSL2+M, they could only go up to 24 Mbps. | | Joined: Jul 2005

This is not true either. VDSL is affected by distance from the CO, just like ADSL.
