I think the best way to help fill the under construction commercial space is to create a demand from the locals. So, what I'm proposing is for the users of this board to seek out your favorite stores and send them an e-mail asking for their consideration of a new store in Maricopa.

Below is a copy and paste letter I use, just change the red X's to the name of the company. Pick out your favorite stores, go to their website and look for a contact us section. Lets tell businesses about the demand here in Maricopa and maybe we could convince a few to put a store here.

 On my short list:

Sprouts, Whole foods, Home Depot or Lowes, Big Lots, Fridays, Applebee's, Olive Garden and more.

Hello,
I'm writing today to ask XXXXX to consider opening a store in the city of Maricopa Arizona. As a resident of Maricopa I'm excited to see the new one million square feet of commercial space under construction and I'm really hoping one of our new shops is a XXXXX. The closest store for me is about a 30 mile drive so obviously one closer would be much more convenient.
Thanks for your time and consideration.

most large companies use population demographic studies provided by the local city that they are interested in.

Until you have more people in Maricopa, you are not going to see many more new stores,
a couple hundred letters to business xyz is not going to get them to open a store here.

There are no real reasons for failure,
only excuses

you know, leehopper is right, BUT for most people Maricopa AZ doesn't even exist to them. If they start getting a bunch of letters, they may find us on the map and start looking to getting here.
Unless these companies have some computer software that sends an alert when a city hits a certain population number, they won't even look.

So i say send the letters! It may help. but it certainly won't hurt!

I also agree with leehopper regarding the point about how stores decide where to go using demographics studies.    The part I question though is the idea we will not get anything more until more people come to Maricopa.  We already have way more people in this town to justify more than we have.  Even if we don't add one more person to the population, we will still get more stores.  Obviously, population growth helps, but Maricopa has grown so fast, it takes time for the big corporations to prioritize and recognize the opportunity here, given the volumes of data they pour through.  And ofcourse, Maricopa is not done growing.

I also don't think letters hurt.  I just moved here from Austin, and you would not believe the ground swell of protests and public opposition to Wal-Mart, Home Depot, Lowes, and other "big box" stores, movie theaters and more.  For whatever reason, people don't want them in their community.  I would think a significant volume of letters from a community wanting them to build here might add fuel to the fire to come here.

Hey Vinny, Got the following response from AMF bowling ... if anyone else likes to bowl, start sending emails requesting they come here!

"Thank you for contacting AMF Guest Response.

Unfortunately, we have no plans at the moment to build a center in your area
but, we certainly will forward your remarks to our management team as a
suggestion for future consideration.

Thank you again for contacting us. We look forward to serving you again in the
future.

good work nytocopa

Yes, the real estate teams from big businesses use demo's to decide if they are going to open in a city. If they get a few suggestions from residents in a city they weren't considering it may just place it on their radar. The decisions are made by people who need to do research, surely they could use a little help finding maricopa and the 30,000 or so people that will spend their money in town.

I'm willing to take about 5 minutes a week to send out some e-mails in an attempt to bring shopping close and home values up. Its got to be better than doing nothing. This city is an anomaly that many people are very misinformed about, its up to us to steer the city in a direction we want by going to city council meetings, encouraging smart growth and becoming involved at whatever level we can. Cities don't grow in the desert without a lot of hard work and drive from its residents.

Check this out, this is the very cool email response I got from Savers. I went to their website and suggested a store site. I hope all of you will too. Not only can you get designer clothes for $12 ... I got a pair of Lucky Brand jeans for $12.99 there a month ago ..... but the profits go to some great charities, including abused children and breast cancer research.

"Thank you so much for taking the time to write to us about this potential Savers/Value Village store. Please visit our website at www.valuevillage.com and in the upper right hand corner you will see ‘customer care.’ When you move your mouse over this, you’ll see a drop down menu. Move your mouse over “suggest a store” and click. You will then be taken to a form that you can use to suggest a location. It provides the parameters we seek in looking for a new location so you can determine if the location will meet our needs.
