I am really concerned that this city is not going to grow, even in the future with all the issues facing it.  I am curious if others feel the same way or if others feel it will grow when the market improves and more people move here.  I am particulary nervous because I have developed a serious medical condition while moving here and i need to be close to drs, hospital and public transportation since i can no longer drive.....i am praying because if not, my husband and i will have no choce but to foreclose on our home in the future if we cannot move and it doesn't grow

thanks for any input!!

I think it will grow, but not as fast as all the realtors/builders told us it would.
It probably won't be the size of Chandler or Tempe in our lifetime.

I also believe it will grow. There is a strong demand for a hospital. I think it will come sooner than later. I don't think it'll take long for the rest to spring up. It won't be next week, but I don't think things will be as bleak as they seem right now.

Human nature is to base the future on what we are experiencing now. Our emotions get the best of us sometimes.

One never knows how what the future holds, but I believe the growth will happen. I intend to see it. :o)

Bacl in 1986 I lived in Hesperia CA, sleepy little town 30 miles north of San Bernadino, paid $60,000.00 for a 3/2 on a good size lot.

no mall, no major stores, 1 supermarket, 1 high school, 1 middle school, two elementaries

today 2008, same house costs $300,000.00 , big mall, 5 supermarkets. 3 high schools, 5 jr highs, all types of stores and restaurants.

In certain ways Maricopa is ahead of Hesperia, at this early stage.

Maricopa will grow, with the current issues in housing its going to take longer, enjoy the small size town, one day it will be big, and you will miss the "small" town feeling.

as for a hospital, how are we going to get excellent doctors to move here to staff it.

all in due time...

We do have large pieves of land available, and are closer to the airport then any other rural area

This is so cool. Aside from an earlier trip to Victorr Valley Bowl, I had visited Hesperia in 1987.( It was faaaaar.lol) My family started moving there in early 1990's. I lived there between 2003 and 2005. However, the city I have in mind when I make my posts  regarding Maricopa is Apple Valley.

I had bought a piece of dirt there in 2003. It's been sold, but the area of A.V. is what I keep in mind when I see Maricopa's future. Heck, the drive coming down 347 the first time made me think of the drive of hwy 18 and the nearby hills.lol

I truly enjoyed living in the high desert. Apple Valley would have been my preference. The area I like in Hesperia was by Hesperia Lake Park :o). Yes, my family made use of the soccer fields :o).

the area will indeed grow. Maricopa grew like no other area, and crashed like never before. In the next year it will be rough for any incoming stores but after the economy starts its climb we will get them.

As far as a hospital, Even if someone decided to build a hospital today it would take YEARS before the first patient walked through the door. I would guess at least 3 years for the design work, soil testing, permits, construction, stocking and staffing. Its a huge undertaking. Anyone remember how long it took for mercy gilbert to go from moving dirt to open doors? Add at least a year for design and permits on top of that time.

If you believed every word that was spewed about growth from Realtors and developers you just learned a valuable life lesson to take with you. Never believe a word from someone who is selling something unless they put it in writing. If the malls and movies theaters were so important to you why didn't you force the seller to add to the contract a full refund if said establishments weren't open in 3 years? they wouldn't, because they knew they couldn't guarantee anything, as you should have as well. You bought on your own speculation, and you learned a lesson about the differences between speculation and reality.

your SOL...sorry but we are in no way going to get that big in a short period maybe in the next 15 years we might have alot of things that other cities have but then again this city has no structure it will just be a hash of stuff over here and things over there no real downtown area. so if even it did come it would just be a cluster mess.

If the city wants a downtown area, they need to approve the Downtown Redevelopment District. Give a developer decent tax breaks on designing and building a downtown the whole city can be proud of. Get the city offices out of doublewide trailers, and find blocks of homeowners in Old Town that are willing to sell out to make this happen.

The section of town west of the post office and south to the tracks (where the doublewides are), has the most potential for a true downtown district. Developers are interested in this area already, but need the city's help because the infrastructure needs to be greatly improved (no sewer, among other things). If we don't get the Redevelopment District approved, odds are Maricopa will never have a true downtown.

Come on City Council! It's up to you to make this happen!

This is so very true. Lets be realistic too. The city could give these families twice what their land and homes are worth and they would be able to get a nice house in any of the current neighborhoods and it would still be a wise investment for the city. It will take a visonary and a good salesman but these people can easily be moved into one of the hundreds of empty houses and everyone makes out for the better.

Bring in a forward thinking developer to design a downtown that fits the historic attributes to this area and provide the community with a town center. If done correctly it wil go a long ways to improving residents and investors thoughts on Maricopa.

Don't get discouraged. I come from the Midwest where towns do not grow fast. We have lived her for two years and I am AMAZED at how fast it is growing. Based on my knowledge, in the next one to two years this is the stuff that will be opeing here: McDonalds, Tutor Time, Walmart (with a possible movie theatre next to it), a new library.

As far as healthcare, I have also heard they are making a medical office park within the next year. I have a serious health problem and personally I would like to see specialist offices here rather than a hospital. How often do you really need to go to the hospital? Usually it is the specialists offices that one visits on a regular basis. If we get some pediatricians, cardiologists, orthopedic specialisths, dermatologists and physical therapists here that is what we need.

The housing market has me very discouraged but I know it will improve. And the honest truth is that I LOVE Maricopa. I think it is beautiful and am excited about the future. In July of 2006 we overpaid for our house, put 20% down. Now we are upside down by over 80,000 dollars. It hurts when I see that if I would have waited to buy a house I could have bought a house for twice the size for less than I paid for our small house. HOWEVER, I can't dwell on it or I get depressed. I still would rather live here but wish I hadn't paid so much for mine.

It would help if we all look on the bright side. This community is what we make of it. It is brand new, has beautiful scenery and has great potential.

Maricopa is Home!

We are about the same size as Chandler was 25 years ago. Chandler had less than 30,000 people in 1980 and they are at nearly 300,000 now. We just have to give it time to grow. As Arizona continues to grow, the close-in suburbs (Chandler, Gilbert, Mesa, etc) will reach "build out" and people will move to Maricopa in much larger numbers. We just have to give it time. Don't forget...we also have 70 million baby boomers getting ready to retire...and we all know retirees like warm Arizona weather.

Great! That's all we need! 200 golf carts driving on the road to go pick up arthritis pills at CVS.

I think it will grow, but not in the best direction. It's got cheap housing, few amenities, and will inevitably attract a lower socio-economic element. Not that I don't think the leadership is doing all it can - I just don't believe they have the capacity to turn it around anytime soon. There just isn't an aggressive vision that can market our city to the homebuying public.

Ohhh, woah, sorry, I didn't know you were a fortune teller. This guy is right; Maricopa will never grow. We are destined to be a town full of people who write only run-on sentences. This will go on forever, like that guy's sentence did. Please disregard everything anyone else has said in this thread.

Why wouldn't Maricopa grow? Phoenix keeps growing and housing is still expensive in the city.

High retail rent, why rent here as a business when you can rent in town for the same price (and have a much larger target market close)?
