You hit this dead on. Why everyone wants to jump on a soapbox about speeding I don't know but SPEEDING DID NOT CAUSE THIS ACCIDENT. This accident was caused by someone JUMPING INTO TRAFFIC in a WRECKLESS manner. Your absolutely right -- speeding did not cause this accident! Someone got impatient, had poor judgment, or whatever and jumped into traffic causing a horrible accident. However, speeding most certainly exacerbated the situation. Had the speeding driver maintained the a reasonable speed he could have lessened the impact simply by the fact that the impact would have been less. Speeding doesn't necessarily cause accidents, but it makes them more likely and severely ups the damage.
Does anyone know if the cars that hit driver of the Hyundai were actually speeding? This statement leads me to believe they weren't:
While the investigation is continuing, DPS stated that James Henderson was at fault and “there will not be any enforcement action.”
Part of any accident investigation is determining the speed of any vehicles in the collision. Had any of them been speeding, the officers have a duty to cite the drivers so that they can appear before a judge to determine their culpability.
Out of all of this I did not see anyone address the real issue: The driver of the Hyundai was over 60 years old. No one has addressed that we have absurdly long licensing expiration lengths and that reviews for drivers that old are not done nearly often enough. This will become increasingly important as more of our population has Alzheimer's, which tends to make people more combative and less likely to get routine eye exams.
This was not speeding. This was not a poorly designed intersection. This was a driver that (probably, based on the reporting so far) had poor vision and probably shouldn't have been driving without an updated prescription, or at all (since there is an increased chance of loss of peripheral vision at that age). | | Joined: Jul 2005

This belief is one of the things that causes accidents. The 347 is a highway - there is a stop sign at the turn to get onto the highway, there is no stop or yeild sign on 347. The reason that there is no stop or yield sign there is that the cars traveling on 347 have the right of way - always. When a driver pulls out in front of oncoming traffic without having enough room to accellerate without cutting off the flow of traffic, that driver is in the wrong - the driver with the right of way should not have to slow down or pull over to get out of the way of turning traffic.
If you don't have the patience to wait till it's safe to turn, however long that takes, you shouldn't be taking the side road. Unless it's someone's fist time driving on 347, everyone making that turn knows the flow of traffic they are turning into.
Look, I never said that people turning on the road were wrong, but come on use some common sense when you come up to Wild Horse get in the left lane and slow down and keep your eyes open so people stop losing their lifes. I went by Wild Horse one day and was in the left lane doing around 55-60 and a car on the right went flying by, he must have been doing 75. <b>Its the impact at that speed that kills!!!<b>

If speed was thought to be a factor tickets would have been written! Also, the guy who was hit was driving a Hyundai, he probably could have died if a golf cart had hit him doing 30 mph.

Alert | Marni-thank the lord, my husband is okay. For once, I was happy he left work late!!! He just got a motorcycle in May, and I worry everytime I hear about an accident because nobody respects bikers! Thank you for caring. My heart goes out to the family that lost their loved one. I lost my 20 year old sister to a car accident, and anytime I hear of a fatality, I want to cry. It was such a hard time and still is, and nobody deserves this (even if he did pull in front of traffic) I almost T-boned a car last week that did the same thing. Turned right in front of me and stopped in the oncoming lanes because the other direction was too busy. I had to swerve into the shoulder and almost lost it emotionally. Since that day and from now on, I go the speed limit and set my cruise. Believe it or not, by going the speed limit, you rarely have to pass anyone. It is THE MOST relaxing drive now! And I still get to work at the same time, etc... I urge EVERYONE to PLEASE slow down. My sisters life was cut too short because of speeding; she never got married, had kids, owned a home. She was barely getting to enjoy adulthood. I know, I would like me and my husband to always be in one piece when we go somewhere. Please everyone, learn from someone elses lesson, and SLOW DOWN!!!!!!!!!!

Alert | | I too was at the crash site on Saturday, and like Erin C was wondering about the family with the two babies. What an awful site to see first hand. I would like to commend all of the people who stopped to offer assistance in what ever way possible to those involved. That poor family! My heart and prayers go out to the family of the man who passed away, whether he was at fault or not, his families life has forever been changed. If anyone hears about the family with babies please pm also. I am hoping that everyone involved is recovering.

That is a horrible story but from your reaction I am guessing you did not read the rest of this thread. SPEED WAS NOT A FACTOR IN THIS CRASH. The crash happened due to POOR JUDGMENT and no photoradar can pick that out. So everyone learn this lesson. There are a lot of poor drivers out there and they cause accidents too. Speed on all day long, there is nothing we can do about poor drivers.

Alert | "Oh Pleeeease! How about personal responsibility? I would never take Maricopa road for I know it's a death trap, but if I had too, I'd make darn sure that waited until it was safe to go and screw the impatient people behind me! Maybe they are responsible and should be sued! "
