I think some of you people learned how to drive playing Mario Carts... How many times have any of you crashed when some other driver caught you with their high beams?

These aren't like high beams from another car at night. Have you seen one of these flash at night?

I saw one of these flash when I was exiting onto Wild Horse Pass Blvd from I-10. The enforcement van was right before the overpass, and it was extremely bright even though I was driving away from it.

Just for laughs and giggles, here's what DPS says about these camera flashes (from http://www.azdps.gov/safety/photoenforcement/PE/faq.asp):

"Do Photo Enforcement flash units cause collisions?

No. The flash duration is less than 1/2000th of a second. That is shorter than lighting due to weather. The intensity of the flash is no brighter than any camera one might purchase for personal use."

I would imagine some sort of study was done to come up with this fascinating information. But... I've been wrong before.

I've got to agree with ETR on this one. I was flashed about a month and a half ago on the 347 (must have been the guy next to me since I didn't get a ticket in the mail), and I was startled, and then pissed (because I thought I got caught), and then cunning (because I just knew I could strike back by saying I was blinded by the strobe.) but at NO time was I blinded or about to have an accident. It was no more startling than a rock flying up and chipping your windshield. But again, I was not vision impaired. A high beam is much worse, and we still don't wreck.
I got up the next day all ready to post about how dangerous that strobe light was.....but then I realized that I would just be seen as being a whiner and that I had ZERO case against that "bright white light".
So all I can say now is "Don't Drive Into The Light".

Yes, I have seen them flash at night. I'm not saying they aren't bright, just that they shouldn't cause anyone to wreck.

Drive the 101 in Scottsdale some night and you'd swear there is a lightning storm going on, yet nobody is spinning out of control on account of it.

Does anyone know if we will get the chance to vote on this? there was a Senate Bill that would have put the use of photo radar on the Nov. ballot. Hopefully, it is on the ballot and the program goes down in flames. Then Jano will have to fight fair and square for a tax increase to close the budget gap which her mismanagement caused.

Hey I like the photo radar. It keeps the roads safer and its more money for the state. But I'm not sure giving money to an addicted spender is a good thing. Would be like giving COKE to a druggy. Ok so I'm stretching it a bit.

Do you have any proof that this keeps the roads safer? I would argue that it makes the roads more dangerous. The 347 is a lot more dangerous when that photo van is out there with people slamming on their brakes.

But I'm not sure giving money to an addicted spender is a good thing. Would be like giving COKE to a druggy. Ok so I'm stretching it a bit.

No you aren't stretching it. What happened to fiscal responsibility? Politicians spend money like it is going out of style.

Very true caveman.

I thought I read an article regarding the 101 photo enforcment about accidents being down by a particular percentage. I thought it was quite substantial. Will have to look into it.

Okay, I can see one flash not being a problem. However, it was:
UNEXPECTED
MORE THAN ONE FLASH - MORE LIKE FOUR
VERY DARK OUTSIDE

I didn't have the same problem in the city. I have never been flashed that many times. I was in the right lane and the people passing me on the left, and the person in front of me, all got flashed. Since I saw the sign, I slowed down and I specifically was not flashed. And not having any light out there, it was a shock.

Re: photo radar anytime day or night.  My son was just told in one of those driving school classes that the mobile photo radar vans are owned and operated by private companies.  They have 90 days to prove that you received the ticket or they have to get rid of it.  They deliberately send a blurred photo so you will come in and fight it and they can hand deliver the crystal clear image.  They hire college kids to hand deliver the notices locally, but usually will not hire someone to go too far from the city limits.  The DMV has a copy just in case you show up there before the 90 days.  If you get flashed dont sign for any certified mail or answer the door to strangers for 90 days.

Do you have the legal excerpt for the 90 day thing?
