Alert | It is sad to say that because of all the crazy driving that people do on 347, that some have decided to take it upon themselves to stop speeders. Well I would like to say please don't do this...Ill will explain why. On friday night my wife went into labor and it was time to go to the hospital. It was around 10pm when we jumped in the car and headed out. well the construction was just lovely holding us up...we cleared the construction crews and I stayed in the left hand lane. I was driving about 75mph. Several cars that were in the left hand lane as well (and the right was open) would not yield to the right. Some vehicles deliberatly hit the brakes as i approached. I had to pass several times on the right then back to the left and I even had one person I passed tailgate me.
Please remember that they may be a reason why someone is speeding. I don't advocate speeding, my wife will actually tell me to speed up at times. Everybody speeds. Just remeber that there might be a reason to why. Plus it is easier to let them pass you and speed away than trying to block or slow them down.
BTW my wife and new born baby are doing just fine!!

Alert | | i think the people in the left hand lane should have moved over regardless of whether you were speeding or not. two wrongs don't make a right. i had the fear of going into labor in maricopa (a week after we moved here!) luckily i was induced so i didn't have to deal with driving on the 347 while trying to hold a baby in! congrats to you and your wife!

Alert | | Thank you. We actually made the trip twice since the hospital said she wasn't in labor and told us to go home. But she was and we had to go back the next night and then they said ohh sorry you are in labor. What a crazy weekend.

Alert | | congrats....my wife and i will be in that same situation around late feb early march....however that being said....though the other drivers could have yielded...you saw you were coming up on slower traffic and i believe mentioned the right lane was open...if i were you i would have moved over into the right lane and gone around the slower cars....whether its right or wrong..when its time to deliver a baby....anything goes to get there without killing anyone else along the way =) | | *formerly known as inyrfce2* Senior Member Posts: 797 Joined: Dec 2006

Alert | Why would you speed unless it was an emergency, and if it was, why did you not call for or signal for help? I am not saying I would not have done the same thing, I did 6 years ago in the Bay area. Heck, I raced home when my wife's water broke and then raced to the hospital... (45 miles round trip, similar to here) Then waited for 20 hours in the delivery room, LOL I was considerate as I passed and when I was tailgated, I hit my flashers for a few miles so the people behind me KNEW that I was aware of my speed and to back off. I had no issue if they called the Highway Patrol. I was just very carefull as I drove as to not run up on people too quickly. The drive was similar, I was on a 10 mile bridge over the Bay.
With that being said.... Don't you think we need a hospital or a real ER out here? Lord knows I do. If you had called 911, you would have had an ambulance drive you and charge you a VERY high figure to drive you to the hospital. You are not the only one that will make this drive in the future for the same emergency.
Congrats on the safe delivery! I hope everyone is doing well.

Alert | | Actually, if there's an open passing lane, what's the difference if it's to the left or to the right?

Alert | Congrats on the baby !!! I just got an ambulance bill from Southwest to take my daughter to Desert Samaratian on Dobson and the US 60 because she was attacked by a dog and it was just over $1600 !!! So I know for a fact I will drive myself or family (carefully) unless it is a true emergency!!!

Alert | Nice, SW40VE. That is part of my point. $1600 was a lot less than we paid for an ambulance in Fremont, Ca that went 3 blocks during an emergency.
We needs ta gets a horspital out here. (ER too) Hell, my friend is a nurse deployed in Afghanisatan and I swear his patients are getting quicker care than we have available...
That airport fund must be good to make a start on the funding. | | Let X=X

Alert | | first, huge congrats on everyone being happy and healthy! i'm due in early october, so i understand your stress and worry. but speeding because your wife is in labor is not the answer. you know you live in maricopa and the highway is torn up. it seems to make sense to make a labor plan ahead of time. that is what i have done. first, i printed out fritzydoodle's list of all the alternate ways in and out of maricopa. i have also found the closest motel to banner desert where i am delivering. when i have an indication that i am in labor, if it's early labor i intend to head for either my mom's in gilbert, or will rent myself a motel room for the night. then i talked to a sheriff's deputy the other night about it while he was in the restaurant for dinner. he STRONGLY suggested that if i have any worries whatsoever that my labor might be progressing quickly, to PLEASE call an ambulance and let them get me there with lights and sirens. with only one lane open, one accident can stall you on the 347 for housr, and while you can call an ambulance from the road on a cell, you then have the added problem of them trying to find you on the road. other than in very rare occasions, babues are not born in the space of an hour or so. you get plenty of notice that little one is on the way. it seems to make way more sense to me to have a plan ready rather than risk injuring myself and my baby, or someone else for that matter, because i am speeding to get to the hospital.
