maybe this has been discussed before but I didn't see anything about it. why don't they extend the exit on the I-10 to the 347 making the previous merging on-ramp connect with the exit to Maricopa and make sure that people know that the right lane (or even the two right lanes) is an exit lane only?  It seems to me that would help with the whole back-up thing that goes on every day. that right merging lane that comes up from the last exit that ends so quickly confuses so many people. people heading south on the I-10 are over in the right lane and have no idea what is going on and continue to back the traffic up by trying to cross over. it wouldn't be a hard job for adot to do.

Because it's reservation land and they won't allow it. Unless they agree to it, ADOT can't change it.

How about this, why don't they negotiate a deal?

They have been trying, unsuccessfully, for many years. Only recently have they gotten the res to agree to allow some widening of the I10, but that is still in the negotiating stages. The GRIC isn't as business savy as some of the other groups in the state. The Salt River Pima tribe allowed the 101 on the East side of Scottsdale because they benefit greatly from leasing all the land and development along the 101. The GRIC doesn't really care about development or progress. That is their right. They are a sovereign nation and able to make decisions as they so choose. We may not like it or agree with them, but it's life.

i don't think it is reservation land. there is plenty of room to the fence to add that lane without bothering res land.

True, the state has been given a right of way (look at that huge median!) but they don't want to upset the tribe as they have other deals they want to go through.

I agree wholeheartedly with Jason.  The pavement is there....all you need is to regrade it and add the appropriate lines.    I don't think it would require much negotiation to get the "owners " of this land to agree to "improve" what is there alread.  Its such a simple solution to aid in the traffic congestion (and "accident waiting to happen" scenario that currently exists).  Maybe its too "Simple" for AZDOT, Gila River community to digest?????  Lord forbid that anyone exercise just plain old COMMON SENSE.  Instead, spend tons of money adding a left turn lane on 347 onto I-10 that just doesn't eliminate the back ups...just moves them down the road a bit.   Oh Well!,

i agree with the original poster that it would be nice if they could do that extension...i also think that the GRIC is a mess compared to some of the other tribes around and find it very interesting that they are allowed to vote in OUR city elections regardless if weve previously received land for Maricopa from them...they may be our neighbor and what happens in Maricopa will affect them in one way or another...but if they dont want to help EVERYONE involved...then i dont think they should be casting ballots in our elections either

They just might agree with it after they finish building the new casino that is going in at the I10.
