Saw it today on the way home. As you leave Maricopa, in the median just before that first bridge, facing northbound traffic. No warning sign. It was a white SUV, with lights on top and DPS striping on the side.

Edited for clarity on which direction it is facing.

Not a good idea. Besides the fact that is too fast, there are cops all over 347 due to construction.

Jason at what point does it go from justified speeding to too fast?

CrownNCoke I got behind one of the DPS cars right as I left Maricopa about a month ago and he was doing 90 with no lights or sirens on. I paced him all the way into the middle of Phoenix. The police generally don't care, they are speeding too.

Let's see...85 is the maximum without being considered excessive speed, a misdemeanor. So I'd say the ceiling is 85. Wouldn't you? Personally I don't think it should be a hard ceiling of 85, but that's another subject.

Jason,
I am curious. Why do you say that it is an "illegal" photo radar station? They don't have to warn you that it is there. The warning that you might get caught is in the form of a white rectangle with "65" on it. (smiley-the real ones are not working right now.)

They have to post their big orange signs stating that it is a photo radar zone.

I saw the same van today and the sign was on the right hand side of the road - and it's yellow not orange. It blends into the scenery well!!

This is why it's illegal and why they have to post warning signs:
28-654. Photo enforcement zones; signage; standards; citation dismissal
A. Except as provided in subsection F of this section, every local authority or agency of this state using a photo enforcement system shall adopt standards and specifications that indicate to a person operating a motor vehicle that a photo enforcement system is present and operational.
B. The standards and specifications adopted pursuant to subsection A of this section shall include both of the following:
1. At least two signs shall be placed in a location before a photo enforcement system. One sign shall be in a location that is approximately three hundred feet before the photo enforcement system. Placement of additional signs shall be more than three hundred feet before a photo enforcement system to provide reasonable notice to a person that a photo enforcement system is present and operational.
2. Signs indicating a photo enforcement system shall be removed or covered when the photo enforcement system is no longer present or not operating.
C. Signs erected by a local authority or agency of this state as prescribed in this section shall contain a yellow warning notice and correlate with and as far as possible conform to the system set forth in the most recent edition of the manual on uniform traffic control devices for streets and highways adopted by the director pursuant to section 28-641.
D. If the standards and specifications prescribed pursuant to this section are not in effect during the operation of a photo enforcement system, the court may dismiss any citation issued to a person who is identified by the use of the photo enforcement system.
E. During the time a vehicle containing photo enforcement equipment is being used to identify violators of this article and article 6 of this chapter, the rear of the vehicle shall be clearly marked to indicate that the vehicle is functioning as a photo enforcement vehicle. This subsection does not apply to a vehicle that does not contain a photo enforcement system and that is used by a law enforcement officer.
F. Subsection B of this section does not apply to a mobile photo enforcement vehicle during the time a mobile photo enforcement vehicle is deployed on streets with a posted speed limit of forty miles per hour or less. </div>
I was going by at 65 (yes 65!) so I'm not 100% sure but I don't recall markings on the rear saying photo enforcement.

There was such an uproar by a few people before saying it was tantamount to being illegal to give the location of photo radar (and while I don't agree with that..), I think citizens have every right and duty to show locations when police are not following their duty in their service to the public. For two reasons:

1) Unchecked police lead to other violations of legal requirement. This can be seen with the SUV enforcing the ambiguous zone at Casa Blanca.

2) Taxpayers are not getting the full benefit of the system. When the signs are out, courts can completely dismiss all citations issued by that photo enforcement vehicle. It is trivially easy to take a picture showing the lack of signs and then write in to the court in response to a citation, if one is issued (after those flimsy snitch notices).

I agree.
Jason next time you see this, stop and take a photo from 400 feet back.
I will as well.
These rules are in place for a reason.
LOL. It keeps both sides somewhat honest.

If I see this type of behavior, I will take a shot from obviously 300'+ back and send it to a newspaper and the local court so it is dated and documented.

Let X=X

Thank you, Jason.
I just wanted to know if it actually had signage regulations or if that was just a common belief, like people believing that undercover cops have to tell you they are cops if you ask them before pulling out your drugs to sell to them.

I think it really just depends on what cop see's you. Yesterday I broke down on the side of the road with my two toddlers, absolutely horrible. Well my husband was 40 miles away in Phoenix. I told him not to speed when he was coming to get us but he did anyways, he was really worried. Well a cop caught him going 91 right before you turn onto the 347. Thankfully the cop dropped it down 7 mph for him or he would have got a criminal speeding ticket. Anyways, he said he passed several cops, some didnt even pay attention. So I think it really just depends on the cop.

If they allow you to bend the speed limits by not giving tickets under 11 over let them bend it some too if. If you wish not to let them bend maybe they need to ticket for 1 or more over. You know that 347 is a photo enforcment zone why do you need signage just follow the speed limits. Every time I have seen one of the SUV's thier signs have been out. I did not stop get out an measure how far back it was. I was told that they give allowances for your speedometer being off a little thats one reason that they do not ticket for 5 over or less which is what I've always been taught. They need to start giving repair tickets out for having defective equipment on your vehicle then and start requiring it be calibrated yearly and if you can't show it was calibrated you get not tag.
