Cabana....any idea on why this would have to be negotiated? Why would they even consider doing this during the morning rush? BTW....won't be able to attend this meeting to express my concerns, but I hope the council will have the wisdom to know what they are already.

Here is a blip from the Arizona Republic as to why they are not currently scheduled to do the work during the nighttime:

"ADOT plans to request a variance from the Maricopa City Council to do some of the work overnight. The city has an ordinance the prohibits nighttime construction work within 1,000 feet of a residence; about 1,000 homes are located within that distance from the road."

I would say we also need to approach our city council to get them to approve this variance.

The contract was initially setup between ADOT and the vendor. They will try to work the hours that suit them. ADOT doesn't obviously care about our concerns. Luckily the City is trying to make matters better.

I think you're confusing the two different stretches they are working on. The 2nd phase is what they plan to do overnight and within city limits. This requires a variance because city codes prohibit work that close to homes during those hours. The 1st phase is done between the city and the Maricopa County line, outside of city limits and outside of the City's control. ADOT selected to work on that section from 4AM->1PM, most probably because that is the only window available temperature-wise.

Put it this way: The meeting tomorrow will be to discuss the portion done in the city and ADOT proposes it to be done at night. Either people are going to suffer through the night or people are going to suffer through the day. This meeting is not about the 4AM->1PM section (I think, correct me if I'm wrong Cabana).

This section of the project is very small and won't be the part that impacts us the most. For one thing the road is 3 lanes in each direction so it is easier to route traffic through. The major impact will be from the City limits to I-10. This the city has no control over.

It should entail the whole project since it all impacts the city. That's the impression given by staff.

That's not why...this was addressed several posts above, somewhere on page 3.

OK I am seriously confused.

All I would like to know is how restricted will the lanes be. Normally when they block off 1 lane, they usually take part of the center line and force traffic in the remaining lane to use part of the shoulder. In this case I suspect that they will not take part of the center line initially, and repave the shoulder, then when they close down the 2nd half, they will take the center line, forcing us to drive on the newly built shoulder.

In either case, we are talking about a maximum speed of probably 35 mph for roughly 4 miles in phase 1, 8 miles in phase 2. I am imagining the bottleneck will produce a pretty long queue, which should prove interesting, knowing the impatience level of Maricopa drivers.

47.2 percent of all statistics are made up on the spot!

I'm guessing here, but I imagine they will block off one lane and rip out both that lane and its shoulder. When they finish with that they would probably route traffic onto the freshly paved lane and shoulder allowing them enough room to rip up the remaining section, like you said. Speed limit will probably be 45-55 the for each section they work on (and knowing so many construction zones that forget to cover the speed limit signs, 65 in sections).

This online pub has an article that states the Northbound 347 construction will be done from 7pm to 1am- the southbound 347 will be done from 4am to 1pm...phase 1 of course.

So going to leaving town shouldn't be too much of an issue, traffic wise, right? It sounds like it'd be coming home, that would be the problem.

What do you guys think?

here's the article:

http://www.copanews.com/?c=135&a=1374:

"Meadow Valley Contractors, which will be handling the paving under the auspices of the ADOT Tucson Division, will start at the north end of the intended project’s Phase 1 (Riggs Road south to Maricopa City limits) with the south bound lane heated to a depth of three inches, milled, replaced and repaved at approximately one mile per day. A two-inch layer of rubberized asphalt will be added to the top, which helps sound abatement. This phase of the paving is expected to take nine days.

An 800 number will be established with ADOT so Maricopa commuters can check on the status of the paving. ADOT will still have 511 as a highway information line as well. Two off-duty DPS officers will be helping direct traffic for each operation of the paving. Lanes will taper to one lane with arrow boards showing motorists where they need to move.

The southbound segment of the project will have paving crews from 4:00 a.m. until around 1:00 p.m. daily, including possible weekends to expedite the work. North bound lanes will be handled during the night shift, with paving occurring mostly from 7:00 p.m. until 4:00 a.m. Every effort to minimize the traffic slowdowns during rush hours will be made with no more than one lane closed in each direction at any time. During this project, a traffic signal will also be installed at SR 347 and Casa Blanca Road."

Hey everyone,

Try to leave town about half an hour earlier to avoid frustration and accidents**- and report back come July 26th on how your commute was affected by the construction...I'm curious to know since I won't actually be driving from Maricopa until next week.
