Since moving to this town ... I have had three interactions with the police. The first .. we had not completly moved here ; we were in our home state at the time ..and my car was stolen out of the locked garage. There was sheriff's police at the time and they really offered very little help because the person who had taken my car was underage.

The second incident was a few weeks ago when they were paving 347 by Bashas and Fry's. I had gone to Bashas to pick up a few things for dinner. As I was leaving the store I noticed a line of cars waiting to exit. I thought is was because of the craft fair that was there.
Anyway, I tried to exit the parking lot onto 347 but couldn't because it was blocked off. So I proceeded to exit onto Smith-Enke. There was a car ahead of me (on Smith-Enke) and he turned right onto 347 so I thought ..okay, I'll go that way too. I got to the intersection of 347 only to be told by a policeman to go back .. just go back. Okay, I go back and the only option was the mall on the other side of Smith-Enke. I go through there to Cobblestone and make a right on 347. When I got to Smith-Enke and 347 a cop stopped me in the middle of the street. I asked him why did I need to stop and he told me ... 'because I said so'. Okay ! I asked him if I could go through -- I was in the middle of the street. He very loudly told me ..'I told you to stop and you stop until I tell you different'. A second cop came up to the car and I asked what the problem was. He told me he wanted to check my car ?? Okay ! He walked around to the back and then to the drivers side and back again.
He asked me why was I so angry. I had to stop and think, if my husband would have bail money if I answered. So, I opted for nice. Told him I was happy, happy as can be. He started yelling at me... saying that they were doing this for me because I live he and he doesn't. and do you think I want to be out here. And on and on for a few more minutes. I gave him my best smile and asked if I could go. He say .. yes.

Third time ... I needed to do some shopping and my husband didn't want to fight the 347 again. Had quite enough of delays and idiot drivers.
We took Casa Grande Highway. Got a little past the mall and a cop on a motorcycle stopped us. He asked my husband if he knew how fast he was going. My husband replied .. not very fast .. He told us how fast we were going. He also asked my husband how long its been since his last ticket .. my husband said a long time. The cop said .. well you are getting one today. I find it hard to believe my husband was speeding because we were going slow by the mall trying to see when the bar-b-que place would be open. There was no one behind us so we weren't holding up any traffic.
To end this .. I will just say, my husband got a ticket for speeding, not having a title and registration application and needs to attend a class. Nice, very nice.

My question is this : if they show you 'your' speed on the radar .. how do you know that was registered from your car. And, if you have proof of insurance and all the documentation from your insurance company, why do you need anything else. Plus, you can check the plates and the drivers license to see if everything is in order.

Sorry this has been so lengthy but I thought it needed to be said.

License, registration and proof of insurance.
You need these items when you drive.
I do sympathise on this post. I have had bad run ins as well, depending on the officer's day. I used to deal with the police almost every day in my last career.

I feel that if there was a 'bad officer day', like you described on the Basha's incident, you really need to follow up with a formal complaint to the watch commandar. This helps you and also points out a complaint to the department. If there is a pattern of this type of complaint, it should be looked at. I believe these complaints are open to the public. They were in Cali. I am not sure in AZ.

I guess my complaint wouldn't be about Maricopa PD but Gila PD. On Sunday, Gila PD was sitting at the curve between I-10 & Riggs. He was doing radar which is fine. I was going 60, the car next to me went flying by me. Gila PD stops ME and says do you know how fast you were going. I reply with absolutely I was going 60. (only 5 over). He said you are the only black SUV that has driven by. I said no the black pacifica with the woman that was doing her hair in the mirror while swerving went FLYING by me but you chose to stop me. So needless to say, he stopped the wrong speeder. I have a family in my car, my family is more important than saving a few minutes, sorry.

Thankfully he didn't give me a ticket, but the real speeder did get away with speeding right in front of the cop. Unbelievable

Jak...during the construction on 347, did you deal with an MPD officer or was it a Gila River Officer? Also, what mall are you talking about? The mall is Casa Grande? I would hate to think MPD did anything like that. Not that they can't, I just don't think they would.

I, too, sympathize with your incidents, but Mallardisme is right...License, registration and insurance are all required for driving in the state of Arizona. Your husband should be able to "fight" it in court if he shows the proper documents to a judge.

I hope everything works out for you and your husband. Good Luck!

Jak, I'm sorry to hear about your run-ins with the MPD, I've always had a good experiences. However, I know what you're talking about with the insurance and registration thing. Back home, you show your driver's license and your insurance card and that's it. I finally realized why - in Texas our registration is a sticker on the front windsheild - here it's a piece of paper you keep in your car at all times. I still have yet to change the plates to AZ, everytime I think about doing it... I just can't. =)

Be careful about not changing your plates out here. They will write you up big time for that. As long as it is snowbird season though, I don't think they will know the difference between you and a snowbird.

There is SOME good in having snowbirds. =)

Thanks everyone for taking the time to read my lengthy post and reply and for the kind words.
The 'mall' I was referring to was the one with Walgreens and the medical centers and Ace ... sorry.
Other than going back through the Bashas lot it was the only way out .. plus I had to stop at the bank.
That cop that day was totally out of line. Not sure if he was Maricopa or Gila but he did say he didn't live here ... I did and I should be grateful for what was being done. He upset me because I didn't know what he wanted or what he thought I'd done. To check my car ... with no explanation why. Just walk from the drivers side to the back of the car. He did this 2 or 3 times. Plus, you could just see how upset he was.
Unfortunate all this is happening in Maricopa; the never ending construction and all the problems we have had to deal with as a result of this construction. It will end, I'm sure, we just need to make the best of it; but do we really need any additional aggravation while we do ?

That's alright goin crazy, although I appreciate the warning, we're moving back within the next couple of months anyway so now it would be pointless. =) I am going to drive up north to see some of that snow before we go though.

Jak, that cop was out of line, it's always cool for you to rant here!

Sorry to hear you had a bad experience. There could be other reasons they stopped your car and maybe at the time they couldn't explain because of an investigation going on. Perhaps your car matched a description of a car that was involved in a hit and run and they wanted to look around the outside of the car for damage. Remember that the police never really know what to expect when they pull a car over, especially when people are aggitated. These guys and women have a very tough job and risk their lives everyday. Hopefully things got better for you.
