Alert | Today's winner was a stupid and suicidal motorcycle rider on I-10. Going 65+ in between the left and right lanes just after they narrow.
Well, either him or the tow truck driver. Both were almost road kill. | | Joined: Jul 2005

Alert | Seems like a dead-thread, but on 1-8-8 This A--H--- idiot on a motorcycle was driving down the 347 on a wheely. I was in cruse control at 71 and he was riding on his rear tire passing me like I was standing still. He turned right onto 238, and when I finally approached the intersection, he traveled east on Smith-Enke.

Alert | people always have it in for people riding bikes...it gets old. granted, doing a wheelie down the 347 isnt particularly bright, but have any of you guys really looked into the causes of most motorcycle crashes? this is an old study, but im sure it holds true still... (http://www.magpie.com/nycmoto/hurt.html) Findings Throughout the accident and exposure data there are special observations which relate to accident and injury causation and characteristics of the motorcycle accidents studied. These findings are summarized as follows: 1. Approximately three-fourths of these motorcycle accidents involved collision with another vehicle, which was most often a passenger automobile. 2. Approximately one-fourth of these motorcycle accidents were single vehicle accidents involving the motorcycle colliding with the roadway or some fixed object in the environment. 3. Vehicle failure accounted for less than 3% of these motorcycle accidents, and most of those were single vehicle accidents where control was lost due to a puncture flat. 4. In single vehicle accidents, motorcycle rider error was present as the accident precipitating factor in about two-thirds of the cases, with the typical error being a slideout and fall due to overbraking or running wide on a curve due to excess speed or under-cornering. 5. Roadway defects (pavement ridges, potholes, etc.) were the accident cause in 2% of the accidents; animal involvement was 1% of the accidents. 6. In multiple vehicle accidents, the driver of the other vehicle violated the motorcycle right-of-way and caused the accident in two-thirds of those accidents 7. The failure of motorists to detect and recognize motorcycles in traffic is the predominating cause of motorcycle accidents. The driver of the other vehicle involved in collision with the motorcycle did not see the motorcycle before the collision, or did not see the motorcycle until too late to avoid the collision. that dude doin a wheelie down the 347 is FAR more likely to be hit by some idiot not paying attention, than he is to crash while doin a wheelie. not that this guy was doing that, but i have accidentally pulled my front tire off the ground AVOIDING some moron turning when they shouldnt. | | "Sometimes I think you have to march right in and demand your rights, even if you don't know what your rights are, or who the person is you're talking to. No harm in riding a bike. The harm is driving recklessly. Number 1-5 could most likely be avoided if he were not riding on one wheel. I am sure you have a much better reaction time if both wheels are on the ground. If you are driving on two wheels, four or even eighteen wheels...shouldn't drive like a moron. Yep, I am mean and judgemental, but it is those idiots that I wouldn't mind seeing creamed on the road, in a single auto accident. | | "Wait a minute. What did you just say? i agree that there is a time and a place for wheelies, etc, and that time and place is not driving down the 347. however, the harm in most motorcycle accidents is SOMEONE else driving in a less than responsible manner.
not trying to be argumentative, but most of the time that motorcycles crash, it isnt their fault. yes, you can avoid accidents better on two wheels, as compared to one, but did you see anywhere in that report (one of the only motorcycle vehicle safety reports ever) that indicated wheelies played a significant role in causing crashes? not even exessive speed according to that report really plays a role.
1: people turning in front of motorcycles violating their right of way. 2: losing control around a turn....
i dont suggest people wheelie down the freeway, i dont suggest that bikes drag race, i dont suggest that just cause your bike can do 180, that you do 180.
however, you are FAR more likely to crash because grandpa turns when hes not supposed to than if you lift your front tire occasionally.

Alert | Didn't beetie get the memo? (see other threads, many, many other threads.) (Sorry, I posted before noticing a second page. I'm now the idiot 'mouse' driver of the day.) I think motorcycle drivers are usually very good drivers. They know they have to pay way more attention to those around them than we do. I'm sure he was on one wheel because he's very skilled at it. The problem is that others don't see him in their side mirrors before they change lanes. If they even look at all. | | Despite All My Rage I Am Still Just A Rat In A Cage
