Alert | Who has one? What kind do you have? Where did you get it? Does it really work well enough for forking over the money for it?
I've had one for awhile but then it seemed like it stopped working for awhile. The owners manuel said don't leave it in the sun for a long period of time.... WHOOPS!! I never get the garage so I'm always stuck outside. Anyways, I got another one but it seems to be a POS. Any suggestions would be great. I see people with them in their car all the time. Thanks again.

Alert | I have used one since 1982 and they are great. Mine is a Cobra. Cost over a hundred, but well worth it.
Just watch for a cop car to be behind and pacing you without the radar on.
Mine tells you what radar band is tracking you, be it x, k or ka or laser. Also goes off if there is a radar detector detector in the cop car; and when emergency vehicles are approaching.
most cops use ka now.
you will get x readings from radio towers and automatic doors. | | The Obama direction car

Thanks OBG, guess I'm going to have to go and hit up Best Buy now. I also had a cobra one but it was much more inexpensive. I think it was only 60 bucks or something. Didn't want to spend the cash if I wasn't positive it would work. Does your make differnt sounds for different things its detecting?

Alert | | I have an Escort Passport. It was $350 at Best Buy but I got it on the Best Buy websited for $290. It has paid for itself 10X's over. Best on the Market. If you really want to get it done, you should also buy a Jammer. | | There are two things in life I don’t discriminate against, that’s drugs and woman. I do them all.

Alert | I highly recommend the Escort Passport 8500 series. I have the 8500 x50 and it is the only radar detector I've used for the past 4 years. Earlier this summer I received the new Escort Passport 9500i which was AWESOME (for the short time it worked - the new 9500i's experienced a few kinks in the beginning which have reportedly been worked out). It has a lot of great features like GPS which allows you to "record" false alarms (garage doors, etc.) so the radar detector won't go off the next time you drive by that location.
Example: My radar detector goes off everytime I drive by CVS. The 9500i can record the frequency that CVS is giving off and store it so next time I drive by it will recognize that frequency and not go off. BUT, if a cop were to be parked in that same CVS parking lot with his radar on, the 9500i would pick it up. Cool huh?
If you're serious about a radar detector this isn't something you want to get stingy with. Do some research. I only recommend Escort & Valentine. They are the cream of the crop when it comes to radar detectors but they don't come cheap. My 8500x50 was around $340 (not sure how much they are now since the new 9500i dropped). The 9500i is around $450 I believe. Can't remember off the top of my head how much Valentines are but they are similarly priced to the Escort products.
Here are a couple links for those interested in doing a little research:

And yes, radar jammers are illegal here.
One more thing, having a radar detector is not a free pass to speed. Radar detectors are just that... RADAR detectors. Not cop car detectors. You still run the chance of getting busted (among other things).

Alert | What is a Jammer? Never even heard of this.
Unfortunately I have serious road rage. Not to mention at night it is so hard for me to tell what kind of car is behind me and with my luck its gonna be a cop at the wrong time.
Not looking to spend four hundred bucks on one, so i'll have to check some of the less expensive ones. Thanks for all of the suggestions!!

Alert | from my experience they don't work. Now a days cops can trigger rather than the old days they had to leave them on so you were warned.
If you radar detector has "X" or "ka" - they are not used unless its a small town like some place out in Wyoming.. Its the same technology they use at Frys.. when you walk up - the door opens.. its old and outdated.
I've had the passport series for years.. and finally got rid of it cause it never worked.
DPS now a days can actually pin point your speed by 5 mph just by looking at your car driving by or toward them.. then if they feel you're speeding, they bring up there lazer, one tap, and done.. too late.. you MAY hear something.. but by that time.. it's too late.
