Alert | | 32" means the overall tire diamater. and then your width will be like 10.5 or 11.5 which means the width in inchs of the tire. and then your rim diamater would be 15 inchs. so if you were looking for tires you would want to look for a 32 11.50 15. First number is always diamater second is width then rim. even 31 inch tires are fine for begginers. Most people run 33s or larger but if your just on trails and not doing alot of rocky terrien then youll be ok.

Alert | | So then just the larger diameter tire itself will add some lift? | | Stupid should hurt!

Alert | | well yes but you will need a small lift to run 32s with out rubbing. 31s can fit but will rub a tad. They make a budget boost kit for around 200 bucks that will lift it up enough to fit 32s and add a 1nch body lift to fit 33s this is the cheepest easiest way. not the best out there but for your use will be just fine. Rubicon express makes one and so does teraflex. Beware though not all tires are as advertised some say 32' but really only measure to a 31. A great 31'' tire can meausere to almost 32 sometimes. If you really are going to go the jeep route i would buy the newest you can. Put a budget boost lift and run parnelli jones dirt grips in a 31'' tires they measure out to 32. they are very good offroad and preaty good onroad as well. I ran this set up for awhile and it took me alot of places. It can come down to driving style as well someone with 33s will not have to be as carefull then someone with 31s but if you find you like it and want to get out to more places then you can spend a few thousand and get a better lift bigger tires. then maybe regear later on. add bumpers. maybe a winch but this is the desert not a whole lot to tie off to. unless you have another jeep with you. offroad lights can come in handy. defitnely need a high lift jack and some tow straps and some tools and your ready to hit the trail

Alert | i have a tj, a scout, and had a cherokee.
how much stuff and people do you want to take with you? a wrangler will have enough room for 2 people and some gear. a cherokee will afford you much more storage space for longer trips out, or 4 people. cherokees are often overlooked, but are very capable off road machines.
if you want a wrangler i would suggest newer than 97 to get 4 link coil spring suspension all around. coil springs will allow more suspension travel without major $$. pre-97 models will have leaf springs, which will give less flex, a harsher ride but are a little simpler.
stick with a sport package, which means 6 cylinder engine, automatic transmission and a dana 44 rear axle. we had a 4 cylinder automatic, and got rid of it to buy a 6 cylinder. the four cylinder was adequate, but certainly was lacking in power. it also didn't get much better fuel mileage than the 6. to me standard shifts are a royal pain off road. my scout took some serious talent when you would get it in a situation that you needed 3 feet.
be sure whatever you get has fuel injection. carbs tend to get cranky when you get in an off camber situation. adding to the fun of my scout.
there are a number of jeep clubs in the area, a quick google search will find a few.
edit: to determine a dana 44 axle as opposed to dana 35:
get on your hand and knees, look from the rear of the vehicle to the front. look at the "pumpkin" or center of the rear axle. if the cover has a rubber fill plug its the less then desirable dana 35. if the fill plug is metal it has the much better dana 44 axle. its my understanding nearly all 6 cylinder automatics came with the dana 44. i know my 01 sport did.

Alert | one more thing. be sure to look at the bottom of it. personally i would rather buy a bone stock one and modify it myself. we bought ours with a lift, but a quick look on the underside revealed that it had never been off road, or if it had been off road it was never used hard. there wasn't a single scratch on the bottom side. it also only had 36,000 miles on it when we bought it. not bad for a 5 year old vehicle.
i'm concerned with buying modified used vehicles because you never know who worked on it. if someone was using that vehicle to learn how to turn a wrench they could have caused a lot of unseen damage without even knowing it. also, there is a huge mentality of idiots that believes jeeps are bulldozers, and use them as such. while they are very capable vehicles they are far from bulletproof.

Alert | I got my Jeep! I bought it from a private party in Scottsdale. It's a 97 Wrangler. Stock everything except the tires, which are 31". It's 4 cyl 5 speed. I looked at 6 cyl auto, but everything I looked at was really beat up or they wanted a really big price. This was priced right and in pretty good shape, especially since it wasn't an off road vehicle. That's gonna change

Alert | | Good job DD. I was going to remind you that Jeep Wranglers have the highest resale value in the nation right here in the Phoenix market. There are tons and tons of aftermarket and MOPAR accesories you can get for wranglers to customize it. You may find that customizing your Jeep wrangler is as fun as taking it out 4 wheeling. Alert | I made an off road trip to the Tabletop Mountain trail off Interstate 8. The trail itself wasn't too bad as long as you're not worried about your paint job. I only used 4WD in the wash when I was driving in sand. The rest of the trail was a little rough, but not that bad.
The reward at the end of the trail is absolutely pristine beautiful Sonoran Desert - just like you would see on National Geographic. I will post some pics when I get a chance. | | Stupid should hurt!
