Owner of a Black 2008 Chevy Suburban, you know who you are. A piece of advice, I own a GMC yukon, which is the same vehicle as yours, there is a parking assist button by your AC controls that will tell you if you are too close to hitting while in reverse. Tonight you could have ran over not only myself but my 9 year old niece. Even after me yelling at you to stop reversing, and pushing my niece out of the way, you continued reversing. If you can't drive that big of a vehicle, don't buy it!

What trim level was it? LS and LT1 levels do not come with the Rear Parking Assist as standard. Also, it has little to do with how well the person can drive it, since drivers of SUVs universally can't see anything within 30-40 feet behind them. It's really not a good idea to walk that close behind them when they're running. Not that it's your fault, but when you're up in those things with the A/C running full blast, it's pretty isolated. Not walking behind them would be a good idea.

I have one too, and I wouldn't own it without rear parking assist. You just can't see a big part of what's behind you, which is why GM felt they had to put it on there. Especially if I am in a parking lot or a neighborhood, there are too many things that can get behind you.

Jason, there are actually more levels than you have posted, like lt2 and lt3 which are by far more superior to lt1. Just thought you would like to know.

Jason,

ALthough it is not standard equipment I have yet to see a new Suburban, Yukon or Escalade without the Parking Assist, with the exception of rentals. I think most dealerships are ordering it with that option.

She told me they were walking behind the truck before the lady started to back-up and before the truck was in reverse. So the lights would not have been on at that point.

Yeah, I knew there were higher trim levels. But it's the lower two trim levels that might not have backup assist, so that's why I mentioned them.

I've never had the need to, but I think a solid knock on their rear glass would get their attention a lot faster than yelling. I know how isolating a Suburban can be.

Just to clarify what happened I was at Fry's parking lot trying to get to my truck, this person started reversing as we were walking behind her truck. Had I seen the white reverse lights I would have gotten ouf of the way and waited. And after I yelled at the person they put their left rear passenger window down to hear me and sped off. Boy were they scared!

Thanks Jason for the advice, next time I will definitely be knocking on the rear window. I just hope that if something like this happens again that the jerk behind the wheel won't start a public confrontation in public, even though he/she was in the wrong.

Has anyone else ran into a situation like this?
