Alert | I have read all of the threads about speeding, driving too slow, driving in the left lane, driving on the shoulder, tailgating, road rage..etc. etc. etc..
But it seems to me that it is all one big problem. A huge lack of Common Courtesy and common sense.
If you are driving in the Passing lane (thats right, not the fast lane) and someone is behind you or more likely 20 cars are behind you, kindly move to the right and let them by. Also, and this seems like an easy one, but pay attention to what you are doing. Hang up the phone, eat breakfast at home, and strap the kids in. Your job on the highway is to drive. When you get in an accident, you not only raise your insurance, and make yourself late, but you inconveniece, and endanger everyone else on the road. You know those nights when it takes two hours to get home? A little common sense and common courtesy could have changed that. SO I say PLEASE, Just Drive like you got some sense!

Alert | | while i agree with you 110%, it is just a very sad fact that common sense and the things you listed just don't exist anymore. | | If you can't spot the loser, it might be you

Alert | | Also note that this is just a very small part of the overall problem: most people live in their tiny, isolated world and proudly proclaim their "me, me, me" attitude! They basically could care less about anything or anyone else. Sadly, until that changes, people will continue to drive in which ever lane they want, without regards to any "common courtesy, rules or laws", etc.

Alert | | The problem is that common courtesy and common sense are not very common any more. You're right though, if people would start being more courteous on the road, we would all greatly benefit. Good post!

While I have never taken any "driving history" courses, I would venture to guess that it's because that is the way people were already used to overtaking a vehicle going the same direction. On 2 lane roads with 1 lane going each direction, you have to pass on the left side. It only makes sense that you would carry this practice over to multi-lane roads. The other answer that I would give is because it's the law. I only wish it was a better enforced law. Get rid of "slower traffic keep right" and replace it with "keep right except to pass", then enforce it and we will all be better off during our commute.

Alert | When I am driving to work in the AM, I am in my own little world. I am on the phone, eating breakfast and listening to Howard Stern.
I am oblivious that there are other cars even on the same road as me.
Pardon me if I drive in the right or left lane. Sometimes I drive 65 and sometimes 90. Mostly it depends on my phone calls in the AM and how urgently I need to get to work.
So, when you get all annoyed and finally pass me or let me by because I am tailgating you. You should know that I wasn't being rude to you and that I didn't even see you.

I believe the answer is actually because passing on the left is safer. Because we drive on the right side of the road and the driver is on the left side of the vehicle, we can better see cars on the left side of our own car. Thus, if someone is passing on the left, you are less likely to change lanes right into them. | | Joined: Jul 2005
