Im just thinking, maybe, since a cop was killed, maybe now, someone will pay attention and realize, that road does have issues.

......

347 is a horrible road with drivers who just don't care...maybe it's time to do something about it?

What "issues" does this road have? What makes this a "horrible" road? Why assume that drivers don't care?

We get tragedies like this every now and then, and it's always hard to pass by such a scene, or hear about it, or read about it later on. It sort of gives you pause and makes you realize that none of us know when our time will come, so we may as well enjoy life while we're here.

But to extrapolate a tragedy to its fullest extent, and make bold pronouncements that this road has "issues" or is "horrible" or is somehow far worse than others in this area...that's probably a step too far. As has been stated countless times elsewhere, this highway is actually less deadly than others in our area. Interstate 10, US 60, even Loop 101 (with all of its incumbent speed cameras) have far more fatality accidents than 347 does. Factually, that's how it goes.

Accidents like this are awful no matter how you slice it. But it helps to have a little perspective.

hey I passed a cop a couple weeks ago doing 85thought I was going to get busted...but he didn’t even move Haha... so bring them on makes no difference to me.

bring on cameras, split the revenue from them with the gila tribe, maricopa, and pinal county. And bring on the cops too. The cameras would solve the speed problem instantly.

Right, because the cameras on the 101 don't issue any tickets. Oh wait...

The 101 with cameras is night and day from when it had no cameras. They would issue plenty of tickets but they would also decrease the speed overall. Wha.

maybe an accident like this is more personal for me, because years ago, before i moved to AZ, i was engaged and 6 weeks before the wedding, he was killed in a car accident on a road very similiar to 347 back in PA, he was literally only 5 miles from my home. so yes, if i call 347 horrible, it is horrible to me. when i say it's horrible that is my opinion, that it is horrible. when i drive home or to work and cars are weaving in and out of traffic, yes, to me, they do not care. they may care about themselves, but they surely don't care about the drivers on the road. to this day and it's been 14 years since he died, i live with the guilt in knowing, that maybe, just maybe, if i told him pick me up later or earlier, he would be here today. to literally lose a loved one because someone decided they were late for work (as in my case) so it was OK to go almost 100 on a 4 lane rural road, it is something i will never forget, no matter what happens, that will stay with me forever.

in terms of I-17 and I-10...they do have more accidents, because they are bigger freeways, but they also have something that 347 lacks...they do have DPS on the roads. 347 doesn't, at least not that much. there will always be accidents on the road, no matter how many cops or cameras, but the point I was trying to make when i posted this was, because one of the people killed was a "brother" to DPS and the police in general, if because they lost one of their own, would that make them more likely to want to at least patrol more on the 347.

but please, if i call it horrible, it's my opinion and i'm allowed to say i think it's horrible. just like it someone's right to say it's a great road. but to make me feel like i'm wrong for calling it horrible...that's not fair or right.

thank you.

the cameras would slow the speeding in the 1/4 mile they are mounted in instantly.

when i used to commute to scottsdale traffic would go from 85 to 65, back to 85 then back to 65 in the areas the cameras were mounted.

I'm sick and tired of hearing 347 is "horrible" and "dangerous". Do you have any reason to suggest this or is this just a knee-jerk description based on one horrible accident? By comparison, 347 is probably one of the safer highways around here. Everything seems worse, because we only have one route in and out, but that is no reason to say that the road is "horrible". I've witnessed far worse on I-10 and I-17.

the road is horrible to drive on. the person behind you is always trying to get in front of you, even if there is no where to go. this causing a dangerous situation by people tail gating to block out the potential braking distance thiefs. all to be the first on stuck behind the 2 vehicles that are playing "rolling road block". i must say, it is the most frustrating road i've ever driven on. thats what makes it horrible.

honestly i think the drivers around here are some of the best i've seen. the sheer amount of aggressive drivers and the few crashes are outstanding. my definition of aggressive driving would be the people that can handle their vehicle at high speed, know where the corners of their vehicle are to cut in and out of traffic and have the ability to avoid a collision while following at such a close distance. while all of the above is extremely frustrating, it is amazing to see so many that can do it.

my problem is i don't trust the people around me to have such abilities. i don't want to be slammed into by an H2 because he saw a ferrari stop fast.

Where do you come up with this? With speed cameras out of a $50 ticket the city only sees about $10 of that, the rest goes to the company. You are going to split $10 3 ways? How do cameras solve a speed problem? If you drive on the 101 you see that people know where the cameras are and slow down for them. The cameras have done nothing for safety and probably have made driving worse with the speed up and slow down for the camera mentality. People need to get real about this and quit the whining. The 347 is no worse than any major highway in Phoenix. The only difference is that in Maricopa there is only 1 way in and 1 way out so everyone drives the same road. There is nothing to suggest that people drive any differently on the 347 than they do on the 10, 101, 202, 51, or the 17.

You said it Caveman..people see the cameras then slow down. Give me 16 miles of that and problem solved. It will happen and the daily Nascar race will end.

When is enough going to be enough? I know this accident is not related to speeding, however, there are way too many people who do speed. If I am driving 70 mph and it looks like I am setting still when someone is passing me, then something is really wrong!( for all of the smart butts, no it is not that I am driving too slow) I think DPS should have unmarked cars, SUV's, vans parked off the shoulder of the road 347 taking pictures and radar of speeders and mail them the traffic violations. Failure to pay results in a bench warrent!!! They do this where I am from and it works!! I even know someone who received a ticket, my other half! Yep, he was late for court and in his police car going over the speed limit. They busted him due to his not being in his juresdiction speeding while not on a call. Even the law is not exempt! They mailed his Captain the cute picture of his patrol car with the number displayed bigger than bold on the side of his patrol car! He had to pay the fine! Anyway...the money made from all of the violators could pay for all of the repairs on the 347!!! LOL

Okay Okay! I was just discussing this topic with my other half and he just announced to me that they quit doing the hidden cameras in the vehicles due to it being unconstitutional. Oh, my again lets protect the rights of the violators!

I personally like that Arizona is not like Ohio when it comes to enforcement. Or god forbid, virginia- where their new thing is to charge 1500 dollars for a friggin speeding ticket!

Jason......gotta disagree with you on this one. How many highways do you know of that have zero enforcement for about a 6 mile stretch? How many do you know that have cars that are able to pull out in front of you with no lights? This freeway is not set up to handle all these vehicles. These 3 agencies need to get together and have full time enforcement daily, on the whole strip.
