Alert | Facts: 1) Extreme growth has come to Maricopa, thus traffic flow has outgrown OUR one highway, 347 and it's current set-up. ADOT states they have no money to widen 347. We need/desire a third lane at least! Also longer (length) turn lanes @ Riggs & Maricopa Roads. 2) More people are coming to and through Maricopa. Politeness and good driving skills seem to disappear when people drive 347. The Gila River Indian Community is a sovergn nation and does not have to give Arizona land for new roads, what we have is it for a while. 3) 347 has a posted speed limit, mostly 65 MPH. Exceeding 85 MPH or 20 miles over the posted speed limit is a misdemeanor in the state of arizona ARS Title 28 section 701. You can be fined, jailed. If you would like to drive fast or learn how to actually drive, Firebird raceway has a school on site called Bondurant drving school. If you have never had a professional driving school before it is alot of fun! Lets be polite, don't tailgate, respect other drivers, construction is underway so watch out for that and think when you drive, there is enough going on on the road to ignore the phone. Lives are lost, just recently 2 people died on 347, the cause as of right now has not been determined and your family does not need that knock on the door.

Alert | The state does have money to build roads in other areas with less needs. The Maricopa Road is in crisis with its tremendous daily traffic congestion that is taking a toll on the lives of its citizens...and needs help, now. One way to cut down on traffic, and get the attention of those who have the power to make changes, is to declare a moratorium on the Waste Management traffic...let the cities and people who generate that trash take it to another location. The squeaky wheel gets the oil!
Gunther, you are right on. Until this issue has been resolved, it's imperative that we drive with patience and care.

Alert | Dose anyone think that pressure from our city leaders to change the 347 will help? Its true that the squeaky wheel gets the grease... can the city turn in to the squeaky wheel? Can the Mayor and the city council draft some sort of letter to ADOT outlining our situation and start the ball rolling that will lead to dialogue between the city and ADOT? Is the city willing to fork over any money for improvements? Has there been any sort of meeting between the Indian folks who own the land and ADOT to see how much a project like this would cost?
This may not be the process at all but I say they need to take this public. They need to fire the airport consultant, quite approving dumb things like hush money, and really focus on what this city needs. I understand that the 347 is not in Maricopa and really have no jurisdiction over it but it would seem to me that such a huge problem that faces all of its city residents would be a top priority.

Alert | Has anyone called ADOT to see if there is a feasability study scheduled for the 347. ADOT doesn't do anything without the studies. The Loop 202 around Ahwatukee has been in the planning stages since the late 80's and they are just starting the study.
I know in the next few years ADOT will be working on the Loop 202, widening I-10 out by Buckeye and also the I-17 by Anthem. Also they are starting to plan to straighten the Broadway curve.
So it seems the 347 is way down on their list. 3 lanes would be nice but I think we would be better off with a second route out of Maricopa. It looks like 347 is not going to be a freeway because of all the stop lights. A second way out of Maricopa seems like a better and quicker option.
Anyone agree?

| | Just doing it one day at a time. Change is good and it should be looked upon as an improvment! not a problem. ______________________________________ *************************************** San Diego Super Chargers! GO!!! Joined old forum March 2006 Post count: 3068 + these | |

Many of us agree. :-)
Unfortunately, we do not have any say over Tribal land. And since the Gila River Indian Community is in no mood to allow ADOT (or any other entity) to create any other routes through their territory, it can't happen. Which is unfortunate.

Alert | They'll work with ADOT. Gila River is moving their casino closer to I-10 and already stated that they would like ADOT to build an access road and additional exits off of I-10.
Same thing happened 15 years ago with the 101 going through Scottsdale. At first the Salt River Pima Indan reservation said no but I guess $$$ talks.

Alert | | After reading through this, I still believe that what really needs to happen first is to learn how to drive on what we have. Way to many times I see people driving slower in the left lanes than in the right lanes. Speeding is wrong but this is just as wrong. The left lanes are for passing and the right lanes are for travel. Emergency vehicles and faster traffic can't get through if both lanes are blocked by slower traffic. Slower traffic in the left passing lanes is defined by the speed of the traffic in the right lanes. If drivers would get over more than people would not perform outrageous stunts to get passed. It is any drivers right to obey or break a law. This is called freedom.

Alert | | You can call the AZ DOT at 602.712.7355 and press option 3. I have been calling everytime there is a traffic backup to complain, and demand they provide better notification to Maricopa residents and start exploring new highway options. No luck so far, but I would like to get enough people start doing that each and every time there is delays, they hopefully will cave to the pressure. Someone does answer the line at times, he is fairly helpful, and can put you in touch with the construction crew for updates.

They'll work with ADOT when they want to. There is no incentive for them to build another access road east to I-10, but there is incentive for them to get ADOT to widen I-10 (the casino). Notice how they've dragged their feet on the 202 alignment. | | Joined: Jul 2005

Alert | Gila River is in talks to relocate 2 of their casinos. One will be moved closer to I-10 and they have requested ADOT look into an access road and more exits for them.
About 4-5 years ago Gila River offered to align the 202 on their land. ADOT said they weren't at that planning stage yet. Now that ADOT has waited, it is going to cost more money to build this freeway. The only money they are saving is that the home values along the premliminary route have decreased but construction costs have sky rocketed over the last few years.

Alert | | Part of the problem with the 202 alignment is that the City of Phoenix refused to put 48th Street through onto GRIC land. | | Joined: Jul 2005

Alert | The other problem now is there is a park at the end of 48th st. The city doesn't want a road going through Pecos Park.
