Alert | Off-duty Phoenix police officer killed in crash Lindsey Collom The Arizona Republic Aug. 11, 2007 04:42 PM
An off-duty Phoenix police officer was one of two drivers killed this morning in a collision on State Route 347 north of the Town of Maricopa.
State police said a Pontiac was traveling south in the rightmost lane when its driver lost control of the vehicle about 7:20 a.m. The car then swerved into the median and vaulted into northbound lanes, partially landing on a Jeep.
Both vehicles rolled in the collision.
The driver of the Jeep died at the scene, and the other driver was pronounced dead at a Valley hospital. There were no other occupants.
The Department of Public Safety did not immediately identify the drivers. However, a Phoenix police spokesman confirmed that the driver of the Pontiac was Officer Jonathan Stuart, who joined Phoenix police in November 2003.

Alert | You know, maybe ADOT should consider installing the center guardrail that they put on the 101 and 202. That has prevented accidents several times and would do infinitely better in situations like this than photo radar.
It would be nice to see the NHTSA analysis of this accident, when that's complete. Then we'd know for sure what happened. | | Joined: Jul 2005

Alert | | I saw the report on the news last night and it's very sad. All we know for sure is that two great people lost their lives yesterday and that the families and friends are hurting today. Our prayers go out to them. | | Senior Member Posts: 4625 Joined: Feb 2006

Oh my gosh!!! 111mph?!?!?!!! Who's going to say that speed doesn't kill now? <img src='http://www.85239.com/desktopmodules/ntforums/images/emoticons/angry.gif' height='20' width='20' border='0' title='Angry' align='absmiddle'>

Alert | I stand corrected after reading the PDF. Too bad the Republic's article didn't have a better description.
Still worth noting that fatalities can happen at less than half of that speed. Crossing the median carries a high risk. | | Joined: Jul 2005

Alert | LOL I knew as soon as I typed it that I would be 'corrected'. There is absolutely no reason to be going 111mph and in a construction zone!

Alert | | Also, I doubt that he would have lost control of his vehicle and crossed the median if he had been going at a proper rate of speed. Then again probably not, when it's your time it's your time.

Alert | | I just read the whole report. I am very shocked. I know that he had just gotten off duty. But man. I'm in complete shock. It's so sad!! It seems to me from what I read he was trying to avoid rear ending one of the witnesses which caused him to loose control. Why was he going that fast?

Alert | The over night shifts are dangerous. I know of several people who worked those and were in (caused) accidents. I was broadsided by someone who had worked an over night double. He must have dozed at the light because he thought his light had changed and plowed right into me.
No matter who, it's sad and many people's lives are effected forever.

Alert | | You know what bothers me, besides the fact that he was going 110+, was that in the report there was mention that he had been sited a week prior to the accident with a speeding ticket. Just reading that report made me sick....

Learn? Gaa... I am sure this officer saw many of the same types of crashes during his tenure. He knew better. I do wish the best for the families involved. The speeding pullover that he recieved should have been an eye-opener.
I would like to know if he was cited or got a 'friendly warning'.
I lost a bet on the speed. I figured a lot less. All I saw were the skids on the left lane, the right lane was repaved before I saw them. 111mph. Wow!
Speed is a real issue on this road.
All I can say to everyone is 'whatch your speeding'. Lose it just once and you might find yourself well out of control. I would like to see if ADOT would like to put in some sort of divider on this road. Speeding will be easier with the new pavement down, and may be very tempting.

Alert | BTW, at the time of the crash, the speed limit was 45. I know nobody followed that, but in an incident like this that put the speeding vehicle almost 2.5 times over the limit. The other person never saw this coming. BTW, What was up with the officer's airbag being cut out of the steering wheel? Had it been used before? | | Let X=X
