Alert | I feel the same way. The window at work faces JWP and my heart drops everytime I hear those d*mned sirens. Praying to God, "Please don't let it be another fatality on 347." We need to have a day of silence here on the forums for all those who have died on 347 in honor of them and their families.

Alert | | Condolences to the families torn apart by this tragedy. I don't know what caused this today, but either way the police enforcement along 347 needs to be ramped up. I would even be for installing photo radar, because it is a warzone on that road at times and it is not going to get any better until something dramatic is done. Thoughts and prayers to the families. The people on the "in car cam" thread boasting about running people off the road and justifying their reckless and lawless behavior should be ashamed of themselves.

Unfortunately, he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. It could have easily been any one of our friends or family members.
Our constant reminder that life changes in seconds……
My deepest sympathy and prayers to his family, may God give you his strength and help you through this tragedy.

You don't think the torn up road could be part of the reason that this accident happened? Why are you going to assume that it is wreckless driving?

Alert | | From the sound of what happened....It wasn't the cause of the current road conditions. It was a freak accident and the victim was just at the wrong place at the wrong time.

Alert | Every time there is an accident, I hear about photo radar. Speed isn't the leading cause of accidents. Losing control of one's vehicle is. On the 347, the biggest hazard is lane changes by people who want to weave through the traffic. This occurs regardless of the speed traffic is going at. There is one way to fix that problem: Patrol officers driving the highway. Photo radar won't help.
I have people ride my butt every morning regardless of my speed. Then they pass me. It doesn't matter if I am in the right lane or the left, if I am doing 65 or 80 mph. Someone wants to go faster than me and they're impatient. Every time you change lanes to pass someone, you're taking a chance that something is going to happen. Maybe you didn't see the car in your blind spot. Maybe you didn't look.
Photo radar is something that keeps a lot of photo radar companies in business. Did you know that most of the camera agreements preclude the city changing the speed limit or red light timing EVEN IF IT IS TO IMPROVE SAFETY because it reduces the camera revenue. Check with the city of Mesa on that one.

Exactly. Photo radar wouldn't do anything for this accident. I also can't count the number of times I've seen erratic driving around DPS officers and the officer does nothing. Looking for speed alone will not solve anything.
Everyone should take this an opportunity to remember that driving on the milled surface requires extra attention and greater times for lane changes. | | Joined: Jul 2005

Driver lost control and crossed the median. What's the photo radar going to do, reach out and pull the car back onto the lanes? Photo radar doesn't catch aggressive driving, drunk driving, drivers falling asleep, etc. Those are the causes of the worst accidents. | | Joined: Jul 2005

Alert | Whatever the cause may have been I think we can all agree it was a tragic loss of life and we should all be thankful it wasn't one of our loved ones.
We can sit here and argue and speculate about what caused it, who was at fault and how it could have been avoided, but the truth is some accidents just happen and nothing could have stopped it.
For those of you who were directly affected by this I am truly sorry for your loss, I can't even begin to imagine what you must be going through right now.
For the rest of us use this as a constant reminder; you may leave your home a father, mother, husband, wife, son or daughter but there is a possibility you may never come home. Take advantage of every moment you have with your friends and families and live life to the fullest. Life could end before you know it. | | Just the good ol' boys, Never meanin' no harm, Beats all you've ever saw, been in trouble with the law since the day they was born.
Straight'nin' the curve, Flat'nin' the hills. Someday the moutain might get 'em, but the law never will.
Makin' their way, The only way they know how, That's just a little bit more than the law will allow.
Just good ol' boys, Wouldn't change if they could, Fightin' the system like a true modern day Robin Hood.

I'm not sure that's the answer due to the skids marks on the southbound side of 347 into the medium and out the other side. It's gonna have to take some work to find out why this accident happened. | | Senior Member Posts: 4625 Joined: Feb 2006

Alert | | FYI a Phoenix police officer was killed in the collision. May God keep you brother..... Our prayers go out to his family, friends and brother officers.... as well as to the family of the other driver that was also killed. Please slow down on 347.... the speed limit is now 45 due to the construction

Alert | | Also, I apologize for not putting this in the other post (i just found out about the other driver), the other driver that was killed was an off-duty firefighter from Camp Verde. God keep you too brother.....you will be missed. The officer was a Maricopa resident. He was way too damn young to die, was married, a great guy and a good cop.

Alert | As I heard it earlier, the SB vehicle had a blowout and lost control. Then swerved into the NB lane and hit the other vehicle straight on. Both were killed in the accident.
I am very sorry to anyone affected by this accident. | | *********************** Heat beats snow!!!

Alert | Makes more sense, there was skid marks going from the southbound lanes to the northbound lanes.
It's very sad to hear that anyone lost their lives. To hear that it's two is just totally devastating.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the friends and family of both families. | | Senior Member Posts: 4625 Joined: Feb 2006

Alert | Any time there is a loss of life it is a tragedy. My best wishes go out to all those involved and I am sure that as names are released, it will travel through our small town and touch others than those who died today.
But this has to be a time to talk about that road and how you drive it. I was going into Phoenix late morning last week. Oddly, I was about the only car around. I was driving North in the lane that was still paved. A car pulled up behind me so I changed lanes...so did that car. It was so close to the butt of my car that I couldn't see the grill. There was NO cause for this. We were the only cars there. This went on for 4 or 5 miles, I would change, so would they, until they got bored playing and took off...by this point I would guess about 85 mph. By the time they went around me I was about at the point of slamming on my brakes and giving them a real close view of the back of my car....if I didn't like my car so much, I might have.
Too often I see acts of stupidity on that road. People who haul a$$ and then I pull up behind them at the light on Riggs. Yep, that was worth the risk to others.
If for no other reason that as respect for the loss of life that took place this morning; drive like you would like to see your future and like you would like to let others have one also.
