Okay I am so tired of people referring to Germany's Autobahn in regards to the 347. Sure they have found things to support what they want to say but they are leaving out a whole lot!!

Did you know....

Despite the widespread belief of complete freedom from speed limits some speed regulations can be found on the Autobahns. Many sections do indeed have posted limits ranging from 80 to 120 km/h (50-75 mph), particularly those with dangerous curves, in urban areas, near major interchanges, or with unusually constant heavy traffic. In construction zones, the limit may be as low as 60 km/h (37 mph).

Still, about half the Autobahn system has no speed limit, but there is always an advisory limit of 130 km/h (81 mph). . if you exceed the advisory limit and are involved in an accident, you could be responsible for some of the damage costs even if you are not at fault.

The zero alcohol limit will apply to newly-qualified drivers during the regular two-year probationary period, and to all young drivers under the age of 21.

The German government's current national road safety campaign "Are you mature enough to drive responsibly?" is also primarily aimed at 18 to 25-year-olds.

Yeah that is right- you are allowed to drink at 13 in Germany but usually cannot get a license until you are 18 or older and then they don't want you to have a single drink if you are going to drive!! Your first two years of driving you are on proabation!!

If you do drink and drive here are the penalties

.3 BAL If unfit to drive= 7 points on license + Fine and or up to 5 years in Prison

.5 BAL Even if you are okay to drive= 4 points on license 1,500 Euros Fine and 3 month suspended license

.5 BAL Unfit to drive= 7 points on license + Fine and or Prison

If you cause an accident and have a BAL above .3 automatically loose license, jail time, and a fine.

Oh yeah and there is also the fact that Germany also has one of the most high tech mass transit systems in the world which allows people options of commuting by high speed trains, busses, inner city rails, and even bicycles because the cities are significantly smaller and more condensed than cities like Phoenix.

The Autobahn is exactly the same as toll roads that are in the midwest and central US. It costs to use it which helps pay for the maintenance.

The 347 is not the Autobahn and even if you drive a BMW you are still not in Germany!

Get over it!!

I've driven on the AutoBahn and have never seen a "tollbooth". Maybe they're more south, because I've driven mostly in the northern regions. Bremen-Berlin-Husum-Hamburg

That's nice and all, but the fact remains: the Autobahn has a low crash rate even though it supports traffic at high speeds. The primary reason for this is that they have a strict "keep right except to pass" law. If all you are hearing is "Autobahn this" and "Autobahn that" then you're not hearing the message: KRETP works. Choose whatever lane you want does not. It's a fact. Get over it.

so, what your saying is its bad to drink and drive? your really going out on a limb there, sure you want to publically take that risk?

EDIT: wait, .3 BAC?!?! here it is .08. so you can drive on the autobahn with a blood alcohol content that would land you in jail here.

yes, we all know the autobahn does have speed limits in some sections. and we also know there is less people getting killed in car accidents, even though there are sections with no speed limits. good info on the autobahn here: http://gettingaroundgermany.home.att.net/autobahn.htm

if you like tight cities and mass transit move to new york city, but i like my space so i'll stick it out here....

maybe if we took some of the finer points of other countries and implemented them in our daily lives we wouldn't be so aggressive and ignorant towards each other.

I agree with the KRETP theory and follow it myself however you cannont compare the two. There is a whole different approach to driving in Germany besides that road system.

It is much harder to get a license, costs a lot more, etc. etc.

Honestly though I hate when two cars are pacing each other and restricting traffic more than anything else. I don't care what side you are on just allow enough room for a car to pass. If the right lane is open I will and do pass on the right- I don't mind moving over.

It's not only Germany that makes it difficult to aquire a drivers license. Other European countries have the same strict rules.
I would assume it's because Europe was built way before the automobile, so people have plenty of other options for getting around.
That's why their cities are built around their train stations.
Some countries will even give you a ticket for not having a light on your bicycle.

You're still missing the point of the Autobahn comparison. By bringing up the Autobahn, I'm usually attempting to sway people's opinion that, "OMG, speed killz" and that we should live in fear of going faster than what the speed limit sign says. Some people are so adamant that they will not go less than that sign, thinking it's there for their safety, so it must be safe to go that speed, always. It's essentially a dumbing down of America. Use your critical thinking skills people! People do not need to live in fear that going faster than what the sign says, under certain circumstances, is automatically bad. We do not need to wait for the government to impose better driver education. We need to put down the McDonald's food, cell phones, news papers, etc. and drive. If people would merely hone their driving abilities, they wouldn't live in fear of the other drivers on the road. They would learn that driving in packs is actually a bad thing. These are all of the things that I'm attempting to bring into play when I pull the "Autobahn" argument.

Well that is definetly more though out and explained better than the first couple refrences to the said road. I do understand what you are trying to say- I was taught those principles while learning to drive.

I agree on several points- i.e. put down the extras, do not drive in packs, KRETP, etc.

I do however think that the government needs to get involved in regulating who can drive and increase the basic requirements. After age 60 you should have to retest every 2 years to test vision, reaction time, and traffic judgement. It should be a lot tougher to get a license- mandatory accident avoidence classes, rules of the road such as KRETP - following distance- - driving in different conditions - etc.

If people were properly taught how to drive there would not be the issues we have been talking about. It is obvious that most people with a license did not receive proper training and are therefore a risk to themselves as well as others when a circumstance arrises.

for example all the people that are complaining that the milled surface is unsafe. Are you kidding?? That surface is safer than a freshly paved road because you now have to be paying attention the entire time!!

Jason- we should open a Maricopa traffic school! <img src='http://www.85239.com/desktopmodules/ntforums/images/emoticons/smile.gif' height='20' width='20' border='0' title='Smile' align='absmiddle'>
