What's with all the moo-rons who don't know that they are supposed to PULL OVER to the RIGHT (not LEFT) and come to a STOP (as opposed to "cruising slower") when an emergency vehicles approaches you from behind?

People not knowing how to drive in the rain is one thing.. But I think we ALL should know what to do when an emergency vehicle approaches from behind..

It always amazes me when i see people not moving over or going to the wrong side. I had to learn that way back in Drivers Ed.

Where was this? I ask, because if you're on a highway, you're supposed to move to the right lane and slow down, but not stop. It's irritating when people stop in the middle of their lane on 347 between here and Phoenix, even though the left lane is clear for the approaching police car.

Sometimes I have my eyes focusing on the road in-front of my and Im singing at the top of my lungs with the radio up too and well I fail to notice the emergency vehicle till its next to me (it makes me feel stupid and embarrassed) But usually if everyone else is doing it I'll catch on.

sometimes it's safer to stay where you're at b/c PD does not like to get into an accident with an indecisive driver. if you can pull to the left, then do so, if you can't then stay where you are and the PD will avoid you rather than guessing what's your next move. if you're in their direct path and they could not get around you, then you need to pull over so they could go past you.

You can't even get people who are driving slower than you to pull over to the right lane what makes you think emergency vehicles will get that courtesy?

Pull to the RIGHT people... RIGHT!!.. not LEFT.. the only time you should stay put is if you absolutely CAN NOT move (i.e. sitting at a light, traffic is stopped..).. if you have some forward motion.. PULL RIGHT..

BTW.. this was going down Honeycutt..

Yes! Pull over to the right! But on a 2 lane road and alot of traffic, if you stop, then people behind you have no where to go. The object is to get out of their way. So pulling over to the right and slowing down vs stopping is not always a bad thing. I've had people stop dead in front of me almost causing an accident..

Took some searching but here is the law:
28-775. Authorized emergency vehicles; approaching; following fire apparatus; defensive driving schools; driver license examinations

A. Except when otherwise directed by a police officer, on the immediate approach of an authorized emergency vehicle equipped with at least one lighted lamp exhibiting a red or red and blue light or lens visible under normal atmospheric conditions from a distance of five hundred feet to the front of the vehicle and that is giving an audible signal by siren, exhaust whistle or bell, the driver of another vehicle shall:

1. Yield the right-of-way.

2. Immediately drive to a position parallel to and as close as possible to the right-hand edge or curb of the roadway clear of any intersection.

3. Stop and remain in the position prescribed in paragraph 2 of this subsection until the authorized emergency vehicle has passed.

B. An authorized emergency vehicle being operated with activated emergency lights and siren is exempt from the requirements of this section.

C. The driver of a vehicle other than one on official business shall not follow any fire apparatus traveling in response to a fire alarm closer than five hundred feet or drive into or park the vehicle within the block where fire apparatus has stopped in answer to a fire alarm.

D. When a police vehicle is giving a visual signal with at least one lighted red or red and blue light or lens and is giving an audible signal by siren, the driver of another vehicle:

1. Shall not approach or drive parallel to the police vehicle.

2. Shall maintain a distance of at least three hundred feet behind any police vehicle involved in an emergency until the police vehicle moves to the lane closest to the right-hand edge or curb of the roadway.

E. If a person who drives a vehicle approaches a stationary authorized emergency vehicle and the authorized emergency vehicle is giving a signal by displaying alternately flashing red or red and blue lights, the person shall do either of the following:

1. If on a highway having at least four lanes with at least two lanes proceeding in the same direction as the approaching vehicle, proceed with due caution and if possible, with due regard to safety and traffic conditions, yield the right-of-way by making a lane change into a lane not adjacent to that of the authorized emergency vehicle.

2. If changing lanes would be impossible or unsafe, proceed with due caution and reduce the speed of the vehicle, maintaining a safe speed for road conditions.

F. This section does not relieve the driver of an authorized emergency vehicle from the duty to drive with due regard for the safety of all persons using the highway.

G. Defensive driving school courses that are offered by defensive driving schools operated pursuant to chapter 8, article 7 of this title may include educational information relating to subsections D and E. The department may include information relating to subsections D and E in any of the department's examination, information or education material.

I remember reading that you safely pull to the right of the road and stop.

From the MVManual:
Emergency Vehicles
Always be alert for emergency vehicles, especially at
intersections. Do not play your radio so loudly that
you are unable to hear sirens. Whenever a police car,
fire engine, ambulance or other emergency vehicle
approaches using a siren, lights or other warning devices,
you must yield the right-of-way. Drive at once to the
right side of the road and stop until the vehicle has
passed.

Pull over and Stop. If you can't pull over to the far right lane then pull over as far as you can and stop.

Sometimes we just make life to difficult.

I'm just trying to picture two solid lines of traffic on 347 pulling over to the right and stopping. Or even I-10 for that matter. It's not going to happen.

But on Honeycutt, there is no reason people shouldn't pull over.

Maybe it was from a police officer I got that...I don't remember...

One must yield to an emergency vehicle if they are approaching you from behind even on the I 10. You MUST give them the right of way by CAREFULLY pulling as far to your right as possible and stop! You do not have to pull to the right and stop if they are approaching your vehicle from the front and the lanes are divided by a solid median. If the median consists of solid dbl. lines, then YES you MUST pull over to your right and STOP!!!!!!!! My other half is an officer for Phoenix.

Thank you for posting on this. Having been an EMT/Ambulance Driver, I know how frustrating it is when people do not obey this particular law.
