06/25/2008 8:28 AM Alert

We are planning a trip to San Diego and I was wondering if I can take 238 to 8 rather than 347 to 84 to 8. It will save me about 13 miles. I have never been on 238 so the question is about condition of 238. Is it worth saving those 13 miles and taking 238 or am I better off on 347/84/8?

Thanks.

Its totally fine. The road is in good shape. Its one lane each way pretty much the whole way to Gila Bend, there might be some spots where you get an extra lane for passing, I don't recall 100% on that. My family uses that road to go to Yuma and San Diego. The only real issue I would say with it is use caution if youdrive it after dark as parts of it are open range, and cattle have been hit in the night. Otherwise the road is great and dumps you our right in Gila Bend.

I'd take it, even if you get trapped behind a cattle truck going 50 the whole way, it's going to save time and gas over the extra 13 miles.

Also, that road is a blast! It is like a roller coaster in some sections. My crappy cargo van makes it even worse. My wife gets car sick on that road and refuses to go to the races with me when I have a race in Buckeye and I take that road.

We always take 238 when we go to San Diego. Save yourself the 13 miles.

If I didn't live around 10 miles west of Maricopa off of 238 I would drive the extra mileage. It is divided highway all the way to 84 then only 6 miles of 2 laned roads. There are too many idiots on 238 that takes dangerious chances while passing not to mention people that have been drinking. If you do take 238 around mile marker 32 on the south shoulder you will see were my friend lost his Mother, Father, Sister, and Niece to a drunk.

OMGosh Geewiz I we know the same person! Well, I'm friends with his wife. Very sad.

Yes this road is dangerous, it will save time, but just like any road anything can happen.

I always use that road, and like u said, no road is safe, so why avoid this one, its a scenic road . i love it. and then i stop by a tacobell at gila bend becoz after that there are no food exits for 60-80 miles
