The city is building & maintaining the parking lot.

What part of that was dispelled?

There is no subsidy involved. The church goers are getting to use a lot they paid for.

The city is building and maintaining the ONE church parking lot.  The city did NOT build all of the other churches in town a parking lot.  That's called a subsidy.

 Amen

No, that's not the definition of subsidy.

Repeating 'there is no subsidy involved' on every response,

still doesn't make it true.

I am talking about the fact they will not need to maintain their parking lot, which is an essential part of business cost.
So the church goers don't pay taxes?
Also they say that we can use the church for community events, but we all know if a tax paying gay couple wants to have a ceremony in this church, they would be turned down. Or if a wiccan group wants to get a gathering together, that would also not be allowed. The Church will allow for the community to use the building, but only with the approval of the church, so its not really free, just a VIP ONLY type situation.
And you know this...how?
I also understand that the church is a none profit, but that is a entire scam on its own that I really don't want to get into.
So don't bring it up. Don't bring up things for which you have no proof and don't want to discuss.
For me its not about it being a church, I would just as upset if it where a Walmart or Bestbuy that would be getting this type of deal. The real affect that this being a Church has is the people think its a good idea because its a church, again had this been a Walmart deal, most of you would not be supporting this either.
Apples and oranges.

uh...the church is building their own parking lot, and paying however much (10 bucks?) a month or whatever to use the public parking that will be built as an occasional overflow...seriously, do people not even read the article?

Subsidy: a grant by a government to a private person or company to assist an enterprise deemed advantageous to the public

Deemed adantageous to the public, because the Mayor attends that church.

Subsidy:

a grant or gift of money

There is no grant or gift of money involved. Hence, no subsidy.

And if you're this heated over an overflow parking lot (primarily for the park) why aren't you demanding the Andersons pay back the half-mil on their parking lot?

When will the city build and maintain the parking lots for all the other churches?  Seems only fair, unless the church the mayor attends gets special treatment.

I am tired of the way this country has turned soooo "PC" that the CH word and the G word is scary to most of you. I don't go to this church. A community center is great, no matter what denomination it is. What are you afraid God is going to strike your atheist children down for having community events in a church? A church is trying to bring a city together. Well that is just a horrible thing! By the way, there is no such law as separation of church and state. Our forefathers just didn't want us RULED by ONE church (Uh - like England). Separation of church and state is a concept that has been completely misconstrued by the liberal masses. Do you think they didn't use the church for school and community events 200+ years ago?

If you are an athiest, pretend it is just a building with four walls and a roof!

I bet a lot of you don't know that almost every high school in Arizona has an LDS church within a few feet, some practically on campus. Many times the parking lot is shared. Some of our high school students have been parking in the LDS church lot. From what I hear, they have been very nice about it. By the way, I am not LDS either.

When I worked with a home builder, many times deals were put together, all the kinks were worked out and the package was THEN presented to the city council. There was nothing sneaky about negotiating and then bringing the package to the City. The city could have denied the package or asked for it to be altered.

I have to go with DD here. The City finally does something right and no one is happy. I doubt this city will ever do something that makes everyone happy.

much ado about nothing.

jeez.

everyone complains about the same thing, not even seeing how they are contradicting themselves...

the church is community center! free to use, etc, but theyre going to limit it? so what? its their building. the limited use (whatever will the wiccans do?) that they will allow, is MORE THAN THERE IS NOW.

the whole parking thing is just stupid.

above the board, shady? heh...its a real estate deal, do you think everyone just lays their cards out on the table all at once? you never get a good deal bargaining that way.

the city couldnt get the land at this price from the owners of it. the church got a good price cause the developers needed a tax break. the church couldnt get it without the city offering to buy some for above what the church is paying, but BELOW market value.

sounds a lot like one of those rare instances where everyone wins a little something. a new building, a bigger park, development on a parcel of land that would have just sat there collecting weeds.

people seriously need to get some perspective.

Proof you don't understand the issue. It's an overflow parking lot that the church goers are paying for. What, do you want a sign up that says that no one going to COH can use it?

uh, they arent buliding and maintaining this one, i dont believe. they are building and maintaining one for the park, that the church is paying to use for occasional overflow.

Let's see.. I build a 20 space parking lot and send the rest of the 50 cars to the city parking lot for $10 a year!

Yeah.. that sounds about right.
