Great news, World....the Netherlands isn't afraid to discriminate!

http://muslimsagainstsharia.blogspot.com/2008/07/netherlands-bans-iranian-students-from.html

THE HAGUE (AFP) The Netherlands will ban Iranian students from studying nuclear technology, a source of tension between Iran and world powers, at its universities, the government said Friday.

"It is forbidden... to grant Iranian nationals access to special training or teaching that could contribute to nuclear proliferation activities in Iran and the development of systems for transmitting nuclear arms," the foreign ministry said in a statement.

Some powers including the United States suspect Iran of seeking to develop a nuclear bomb. Iran insists its nuclear program is aimed at producing energy to serve a growing population.

Friday's measure adds to a Dutch decree adopting international sanctions against Iran that were put in place last year.

It bans Iranians notably from the nuclear reactor in Borssele in the southeastern Netherlands, and from a test reactor at the Delft University of Technology. Read more ...

I work for one of the top ten US defense contractors, and I have an Iranian co-worker. He is a great guy. I also have a Chinese co-worker who is cool as heck. Both of them are as American as anyone else (actually more so because the Chinese guy defected and can never go home or he will be killed), and know more classified information than either of you will ever know. Not all Iranians are terrorists. I understand the caution with the students but take a chill pill........

Better to error on the side of caution and ban all Iranian "students" from sensitive fields of study.  That goes for flight school too.

I wish we could, but it looks like we'll learn too late, like England.

Western Culture: If we didn't know better, we'd say the news out of England suggests the British are hell-bent on killing their civilization. But, of course, we do know better — don't we?

So how does this article relate to singling out people based on race alone again??????

You surely don't believe this ban was about race!

No, if they did background checks on these students. But what about an Iranian who becomes an American citizen? He/she still cannot study nuclear physics? What if they want to become an engineer and work for the government? If you say "too bad" it's funny because it already happens. Schools should focus on background checks on ANY person of ANY race who wants to study nuclear technology.

The article from England is not related to the original posted article. The article from England tells of people bending over backwards to be politically correct. Got that. The first article is about banning all people of a particular nationality from studying a particular subject in school.

The Dutch are just trying to be politically correct when they shouldn't.   Being PC instead of truthful is always a mistake in my opinion.   Nationality has nothing to do with it.  It's simply a non Muslim nation not wanting students from a militant  Muslem nation to study nuclear technology at its universities.

But there's always more to stories like this.  Since the Dutch government is also curently trying to ban burqas, my guess is they are having problems with the identity of students who refuse to uncover their faces.

The people of the Netherlands have a right to run their country the way they see fit in my opinion.  Iran needs to understand that and send their students somewhere where they are welcome.

Should the Dutch be persecuted because they don't want to educate people intent on "wiping Israel off the map" ?

I don't think so.

I didn't read the article, but shouldn't citizenship trump race? Do foreigners try to gain citizenship in order to destroy us from within? I would think these fanatic's principles would get in the way.

What if they want to become an engineer and work for the government? If you say "too bad" it's funny because it already happens.

I'm confused. Are engineers (or anyone for that matter) working for the government not required to be citizens? On the surface, if that's not the case, seems like a really bad idea to have non-citizens working for our government.

Agreed!

Correct, but alot of your average everyday Iranians could care less about wiping Israel off of the map.  Stereotyping is stereotyping, ban everyone studying nuclear technology unless they pass a check or ban no one.  Doesn't make sense.  Remember also that at one time Iran was our ally.  My Iranian co-worker was trained by the US Navy.

You have to be a US citizen to work classified material.  But you will find MANY engineers who were born in a different country working here.  So saying someone is a terrorist just because they were born in a Middle Eastern country is ridiculous.  Remember that Osama is a Saudi, and Saudi Arabia is one of our allies.  So country of origin matters not.

Isn't there some kind of screening to get a VISA to work here, or are you just talking foreigners who gain citizenship to stay and work here?

I agree. I don't think where someone is born determines whether they'll be a terrorist or not, but right or wrong, I might perk up a bit if someone just recently came here from a country recognized for its terrorism. The fairest (and probably safest) solution is to evaluate anyone who wants into any kind of sensitive program.

There is screening for Visas, and a long process for citizenship. Most of the terrorists that are already here crossed the border illegally in Arizona, Texas, or SoCal. I agree with your second paragraph.
