In high school we played against a very urban school that had metal detectors at all the entrances of the builidings and the football stadium, etc. If schools or the government were serious about public safety they'd install more equipment to deter this type of action. Schools lack funding for this type of security so there will continue to be these type of holes that limit our safety in a public location.

Unfortunately we live in a violent country where these types of events can and will happen. Think of the Hollywood bank robbery that happened where the police were out-gunned. What's 1 pistol going to do when the perp(s) have an AK-47 or AR-15?

I don't know how you can think you can combat gun violence by putting more guns out there.

It's very simple by training the training the public and arming the public it strikes fear into the guy that decides to go on a shooting rampage. In a sense it makes the OP think twice about going on a shooting spree, not only does he have to fear the police but he has to worry about being engaged by a citizen at the same time.

Giving people guns in school, make it a heck of alot easier for fist fights to turn into murder by bullets.
Sure, they would have to be licensed to carry, but sometimes people can have bad days and let their tempers take control.

LoveScience - You make a good point. Prior to retiring, I was in two lock-down situations (both were false alarms). Both times, I wondered what I would do if a shooter came to my class as the door was as secure as tissue paper. I and 20 some high schoolers would have presented a rich target environment. If I was armed it would be a different story.

It would be easier to build 20 foot wall around the school and have armed security.

Not on college campuses, because  of the size. But smaller schools.

So, lock up the good guys so they don't shoot the bad guys.
