San Diego Border Patrol Discovers Wire Possibly Strung to Decapitate Agents
SAN DIEGO -- The Border Patrol says it found a metal wire strung between two border fences in San Diego -- an apparent effort to inflict serious injury or even death to its agents.

An agent discovered the wire on the ground Saturday. It was strung about 150 feet between San Diego's two border fences, leading through a hole into Mexico. The agency said the wire would be about four feet high if someone pulled on it from the Mexican side -- high enough to strike an agent on all-terrain vehicle in the neck.

The discovery comes amid rising border violence in San Diego. The Border Patrol says agents are increasingly under attack from people on Mexican soil and has retaliated in some cases by firing tear gas.

At what point do we become more vigilant?

That is totally messed up. I say open fire. You get one warning to stop. Then start shooting. Can we lay minefields in that area? Some of the "coyotes" have better weapons than the border patrol agents.

Why give them a warning shot?  You might miss your chance to help civilization!

I'm all for taking care of them on the spot, but our government seems to side with Mexico. We already have two border patrol agents sitting in prison for trying to do their jobs. BTW, I heard yesterday that Bush has been working for two years on sending millions of dollars to Mexico to help them secure THEIR southern border. And this has been planned with no input from Congress. Has anyone else heard anything about this?

I went to a website once that showed all the border patrol agents killed while on the job. You never hear about these heroes, but there are a ton of them who are shot, ambushed, etc. Very sad. Shoot the border runners like they do in other countries. Send in some special forces to spring our guys from jail.

I am more appalled that Border Patrol agents are riding ATVs. These guys get to cruise around dunes on ATVs to protect our border? Why don't they ride in trucks like most Border Patrol agents?

I happen to have a friend that's a border patrol agent. I'll ask him next time I talk to him.

You're honestly more appalled about the type of vehicle our border patrol agents are driving than about those who are trying to kill them as they attempt to do their job?  I would have thought that as someone very concerned about the Iraq war and the number of lives being lost from it that you'd place a higher value on life than that...  unless to your thinking the lives of our border patrol agents are somehow of less value.  I'm not asking this to mock you, but because I truly don't get it--it just seems inconsistent to me.

I'm guessing that the ATVs may be more effective than trucks for traveling over sandy terrain--which probably characterizes much of the area that the Agents are patrolling (think about the fun of digging a truck out of the sand).  Just an uneducated guess.  I'll be interested to hear what Drummer's friend says about it.
