Alert | Before I saw that Lamplight Sniper had already posted the subject here, I was going to put it in the General. I feel that it’s about our freedom and civil liberties more so than politics. Nevertheless, it’s something everyone needs to be aware of.
According to a story on CNN Link to CNN Story the FBI is gearing up to create a massive computer database of people's physical characteristics, all part of an effort the bureau says to better identify criminals and terrorists. Notice how I said “peoples”, not criminals. Everybody. All of us. Just the thought that the FBI would even consider this should scare everyone. And those individuals behind bringing an idea like this forward should get a one-way ticket to Pyongyang and their US citizenship revoked. They don’t deserve to have it.
The bureau is expected to announce in coming days the awarding of a $1 billion, 10-year contract to help create the database that will compile an array of biometric information -- from palm prints to eye scans. They are using our money to keep us in line. This is one more reason why we should severely restrict the amount of money the government gets from us.
Kimberly Del Greco, the FBI's Biometric Services section chief, said adding to the database is "important to protect the borders to keep the terrorists out, protect our citizens, our neighbors, our children so they can have good jobs, and have a safe country to live in." Tell you what. Want to know how to protect your border? Ask the South Koreans. They have it down to a science and they didn’t need a biometric database to do it.
Many of us wore the uniform of this country so that America would be free not safe. There are those among us who would sacrifice freedom for safety. In the end, they’ll have neither.
"It's the beginning of the surveillance society where you can be tracked anywhere, any time and all your movements, and eventually all your activities will be tracked and noted and correlated," said Barry Steinhardt, director of the American Civil Liberties Union's Technology and Liberty Project.
Mistakes will be made with this data and people will end up under surveillance and arrest because of it. The government can’t even manage airport security and a simple no-fly list.
According to the article, you don't have to be a criminal or a terrorist to be checked against the database. More than half the checks the FBI runs involve criminal background checks for people applying for sensitive jobs in government or with government contractors. Things like this start out as public safety enhancements and before you know it, everyone is in the database.
Check this out: The FBI says it hasn't been saving the fingerprints for those checks, but that may change. The FBI plans a so-called "rap-back" service in which an employer could ask the FBI to keep the prints for an employee on file and let the employer know if the person ever has a brush with the law. The FBI says it will first have to clear hurdles with state privacy laws, and people would have to sign waivers allowing their information to be kept. Personally, I would go on food stamps before I would ever sign something like that.
Critics say people are being forced to give up too much personal information. But Lawrence Hornak, the co-director of the research center at West Virginia University, said it could actually enhance people's privacy. "It allows you to project your identity as being you," said Hornak. "And it allows people to avoid identity theft, things of that nature." Desert Dweller will gladly pay for the first one-way ticket for Mr. Hornak to the Communist totalitarian dictatorship of his choice. | | Stupid should hurt!

Alert | You know, it's not the man in the White House that's going to take our civil liberties. It's the system. The government is afraid of the people. They would rather not have us armed. They would rather know what we're doing and when we're doing it.
The thing that will be the final blow to a free America isn't a black President. It's apathy amongst the people who have so much to lose. We may very will recall to our grandchildren how nice it was to walk down the street at night without fear of being arrested or without worrying about having our home routinely searched. | | Stupid should hurt!

Alert | We really need to tread lightly here though! This is my point of view, and only mine!
We are asking to have our civil liberties, in whatever form, taken away every single time that something like this slips through the US media circus and we do nothing! By doing nothing it is the same as granting permission! We can talk and debate on a local community forum all day long, but if action is not being taken, we have no room to complain.
We have been warned, time and again, that the country, our country, is going to hell in a hand basket! Yet we sit here and only debate through written words on a forum. Soon, very soon my friends, we won't even have the ability to complain about these things, even on a forum!
The real ID chip that Napolitiano (whatever her name is) is saying that we need for "protection" is going to lead to implants under the skin. A Florida family (morons that they are) have already had it done. They say it is for protection, but we have not had a single "terrorist" attack on US soil in over 7 years!!! 9/11 worked very effectively, in that people are still so afraid of a repeat attack that they are willing to sighn their lives away for protection that we don't need and can no longer afford!
That's all I'm going to say for now, as I fear that is probably already too much lol! | | “A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds.”

Do you have any documentation to your definition of "disarm"? Let me guess, you support Ron Paul?
I've never been more clearer about who to vote for. It has NOTHING to do with race. It has everthing to do with making this country functional again and taking the power away from the 1%.

Hey, hey, hey! I support Ron Paul you goof! But, it's not that I support the type of candidate he has become!
We are Americans, period end of discussion. It is in the constitution that we have the right to bare arms! I have every right to defend my family and my property by any means necessary. With the state of the world as it is, that means that guns are a necessity. I never, ever, ever would have supported (as a mommy) guns in homes if the world wasn't what it is! Countless children lose their lives every year to gun fire because a stupid butt (wish I could swear on here lol) parent didn't take the proper precautions while enjoying their right to own one. I have a 12 year old and he would love nothing more than to go out "shooting" with a neighbor of ours.
I'm all for gun control, but that does not, or at least should not, include taking away my right to own one. Maybe it would be better if I said I am all for gun education?! | | “A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds.”

Alert | Irish Cream, you have the right idea. Short of an armed uprising the only things we can do are vote, call our elected officials, and spread the word amongst ourselves. Don't discount the power of a community forum. This country is founded based upon the actions of a group of dissidents who decided, in a back room, that King George had gone about as far as they were going to allow him to go.
Part of the problem is apathy which is bread by contentment and complacency. Give us the Super Bowl and a 12-pack and everything will be fine. Make sure there is enough left out of that paycheck for an SUV and a house in the suburbs and you won't hear a peep out of the masses. Meanwhile, we find that we need a special driver's license that doubles as a national ID just to drive that SUV on the highway.
Most people just won't realize that this stuff is really happening until it's too late. The day is coming where words like the ones we're exchanging now will be monitored and analyzed by government computers. Say the wrong thing and there will be guys at the door from Homeland Security arresting you for being a subversive. | | Stupid should hurt!

Alert | I agree. I am of the mind that I would not take it laying down, and you're not going to get me into a cell without a fight. The whole point is that we have the absolute right to be heard without fear of government reprisal, which is what the USA is about. Say what's on your mind and don't worry about being arrested.
It's going to take another revolution at some point to bring the government back into check.
When was the last time you heard of a terrorist attack in Luxembourg? Or Sweden? Why is that? | | Stupid should hurt!

Alert | DesertDweller, I completely agree with you, 100% AND I agree with Drummer!
We are moving in the direction that will have every single liberty taken away! I just addressed this issue on another topic and we really, sincerely must stand up for our rights!
We had a gentleman here yesterday who wathced the "Super Bowl" with us. It was very enlightening to hear someone who has served in our armed forces tell us that our very own governement, the people we "elect" into office, are completely dishonest with us!
It would be, if I didn't have children (which 'they' are counting on) to just say; "Yes, throw me in jail because I 'suppose' your war on terror!"
Drummer, I know that your little girl might not be so open to the idea of you going to jail over her civil liberties. This is where I think that most other Americans who have any amount of education should step in. We know better and the fact that "they" want us to stay so silent that they are willing to take away our right to the internet, is very telling!
Have you seen the movie, "V for Vendeta"(total sp)? This is what we are living through, right now! My children and hopefully yours, will be educated and they won't be ashamed that their parents went to jail for these causes! We are constantly being informed about the issues and the situation, but a lot of perople are turning a blind eye to the real issues. | | “A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds.”

So if blacks are responsible for over 70% of the crime rate in America, and one out of 4 is processing somewhere in our corrections system you want to put one in the White House? Hell that's the test of all tests if you ask me.

Alert | | If I'm a racist let the punishment fit the crime, that's what makes America great, I can judge a race by the aactions of a majority. Boo hoo you gonna cry? And to answer your question, do I think a small truckload of high nitrate fertilizer blew a federal building in half, well honestly working in demolition for 6 years I say HELL NO. In order to achieve that kind of damage you need a structual cracking high explosive, not low grade fertilizer, considering these bombs came out of Arizona the highest grade he could possibly obtained would have been 43% nitrate, which I consider pipebomb material. In order to achieve the damage done in Oklahoma, Semtex, C4 with steel plate backing and detcord would have been a must. But of course Im a conspiracy theorist what would I know haha.

You have a very funny definition of "equality and fairness".
Thanks, Higgs | | Liberalism and capitalism address themselves to the cool, well-balanced mind. They proceed by strict logic, eliminating any appeal to the emotions.
