http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080123/ap_on_go_pr_wh/misinformation_study

WASHINGTON - A study by two nonprofit journalism organizations found that President Bush and top administration officials issued hundreds of false statements about the national security threat from Iraq in the two years following the 2001 terrorist attacks.

The study concluded that the statements "were part of an orchestrated campaign that effectively galvanized public opinion and, in the process, led the nation to war under decidedly false pretenses."

The study was posted Tuesday on the Web site of the Center for Public Integrity, which worked with the Fund for Independence in Journalism.

White House spokesman Scott Stanzel did not comment on the merits of the study Tuesday night but reiterated the administration's position that the world community viewed Iraq's leader, Saddam Hussein, as a threat.

"The actions taken in 2003 were based on the collective judgment of intelligence agencies around the world," Stanzel said.

The study counted 935 false statements in the two-year period. It found that in speeches, briefings, interviews and other venues, Bush and administration officials stated unequivocally on at least 532 occasions that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction or was trying to produce or obtain them or had links to al-Qaida or both.

"It is now beyond dispute that Iraq did not possess any weapons of mass destruction or have meaningful ties to al-Qaida," according to Charles Lewis and Mark Reading-Smith of the Fund for Independence in Journalism staff members, writing an overview of the study. "In short, the Bush administration led the nation to war on the basis of erroneous information that it methodically propagated and that culminated in military action against Iraq on March 19, 2003."

Named in the study along with Bush were top officials of the administration during the period studied: Vice President Dick Cheney, national security adviser Condoleezza Rice, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld, Secretary of State Colin Powell, Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz and White House press secretaries Ari Fleischer and Scott McClellan.

Bush led with 259 false statements, 231 about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq and 28 about Iraq's links to al-Qaida, the study found. That was second only to Powell's 244 false statements about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq and 10 about Iraq and al-Qaida.

The center said the study was based on a database created with public statements over the two years beginning on Sept. 11, 2001, and information from more than 25 government reports, books, articles, speeches and interviews.

"The cumulative effect of these false statements — amplified by thousands of news stories and broadcasts — was massive, with the media coverage creating an almost impenetrable din for several critical months in the run-up to war," the study concluded.

"Some journalists — indeed, even some entire news organizations — have since acknowledged that their coverage during those prewar months was far too deferential and uncritical. These mea culpas notwithstanding, much of the wall-to-wall media coverage provided additional, 'independent' validation of the Bush administration's false statements about Iraq," it said.

How can people still like Bush?

Bush is Hitler. The Republicans are Nazi's. He built the concentration camp in Guantanamo Bay. America is better than that. Bill Clinton didn't build a Nazi camp after the '93 bombing of the World Trade Center. Ramsey Yusef was tried, convicted and is rotting in prison right now for that. Osama Ben Laden is "no longer a priority" said George Bush. OBL is a free man.

In December 2005, Bush said we're winning the war. Stay the course. In June 2006, he said we're not losing the war, let the generals in Iraq run the war. Stay the course. We don't want Washington running this war. After the Dem's won the last election, he suddenly fired Rumsfeld, called for a troop surge, and said "I am the Decider". Then he VETOED funding for the troops. The Republicans said, "if you're against the war, then you're against the troops". How can Bush be FOR the war but VETO funding for the troops?

The Republicans claim to be the "moral" party. How many Republican presidential candidates dumped their first wife and married the Bimbo De Jur? All of them. Except Romney. The Democrats: all married just once. The Democrats said till death do us part and stayed true to their vows no matter how hard the Republicans tried to get them to divorce over Monica. And Republicans LOOOOVE Reagan, despite the fact that he cut and run from Jane Wyman and married Nancy Davis. "Facts are stubborn things." Moral? NOT!

Bush and the Republicans:
-vetoed funding for the troops,
-deleted White House emails after they were told not to (worse than Sandy Burglar),
-erased interrogation tapes despite a court order not to,
-pardoned a terrorist bomber, a counterfeiter, 4 drug dealers (LSD, cocaine, pot, quaaludes), an embezzler, and 51 other criminals,
-lied about weapons of mass destruction,
-outted a CIA spy married to an ambassador which now puts the lives of all ambassador's spouses in danger,
-went to war in Iraq with no plan to get out,
-added another half a trillion dollars to the national debt in 2007.

Now Bush wants to add another $150 billion or so to the deficit by writing checks to everyone. The Republicans call it "Stimulating the Economy", but when the Democrats do it they are called "Tax and Spend Socialistic Liberals".

Here is the clincher: Bush is beloved with a 33% approval rating. How can these people love George when he continues to sacrifice warriors by feeding them to the volcano. Fight fire with fire. Nuke the volcano. Stop sending our troops to Iraq, Nuke Iraq, instead.

Republicans can't get 'er done. I'm voting for anyone else who is not a Republican.

What a silly article

3 statements were repeated 532 times through various media and that means the administration orchestrated a national brainwashing campaign?

Where does it say anything about Clinton in there? Because he said the same exact things… but we hear crickets from the left. In fact would you like me to show you all of the lefties that AGREED with the national security assessment? Are you going to tell me they had different intelligence?

As for the “non-profit” groups that wrote this hit piece, what do you know about them? Think they are unbiased? Almost the entire board of “The Fund for Independence in Journalism” comes directly from academia, as in no real world experience. Their major contributor Charles Lewis wrote, “The Buying of the President” 2004 (HarperCollins). Hey what do you know, Charles Lewis happened to be the founder of the other non-profit, “The center for Public Integrity”…. Coincidence? None of this completely discounts their efforts but they ARE a COMPLETELY biased group.

As for the comparison of Bush to Hitler, that is simply your neon sign saying that you are an idiot and don’t deserve a real response…. In fact your whole post was idiotic rhetoric spewed from the left. I bet you still cry yourself to sleep thinking Gore actually won Florida.

Gore did not win in Florida. Gore did win the popular vote in America by over 500,000 votes. However, the president is not elected by the popular vote. The president is elected by the electoral college. Any idiot would know that.

You picked Bush. Twice. Now we're stuck in Iraq with our troops dying everyday, and you just don't care. The only thing you care about is electing another Republican.

Thank you to all the troops who have served, are serving and will serve your country.

First of all I don't love Bush but I respect the office and truly believe he did what he thought was the right thing.

I don't even have a candidate picked out yet. Ron Paul would be my closest pick but I really doubt he'll get the nominaton. I bet you pick a democrat just because they are a democrat. Honestly, besides higher taxes and less troop support, what will democrats offer?

Why the list? Maybe you should look up how many troops died in a single day at Normandy or Iwo Jima?

Didn't Ron Paul want to abolish the taxpayer funded Educational system. Does that mean everyone goes back to homeschooling?

At least he's honest and consistent. All the other candidates will lie and say anything to get into office.

Actually he's probably lying too. If he was elected, he would never abolish public education.

"Why the list?" Because we can change the number of casualties by our actions today. By withdrawing the troops there will be less American troops lives lost on January 24, 2008, and January 25, 2008, and everyday following. Show me shock and awe by withdrawing the troops and nuking Iraq. Not by staying the course we are on now.

We can't change today what happened in WWII. We can change what happens tomorrow and next year. That's why.

Paul actually said he was misquoted on that.

http://www.ontheissues.org/2008/Ron_Paul_Education.htm

Someone else posted a series of Ron Paul seminars which strangely enough didn't have Ron Paul actually in them. The series was great because it showed Paul's no-nonsense business plan for America.

Ron Paul said he wanted to abolish the public education system on Jon Stewart's Show. Jon Stewart went through the whole list including IRS and Public Education. He raised his hand to get rid of them all.

I don't know about abolishing them but lets face it, neither actually work. I was told that teachers in MARICOPA are told to dumb down the material so more kids pass. How is that a functional education system? Maybe privatising is the way to go?

WOmpus and Rex, Granny has to say something here. I KNOW ALL of us morn the loss of our soldiers and the burden on their families.
Please keep in perspective that EVERYONE of our enlisted Men and Women DID JUST THAT!!! ENLISTED. This "WAR" was not staffed by a DRAFT. Your list that goes on and on is sure to grow and this does trouble me. I see our Military every day at the Airport. Women in uniform holding their babies, and their husbands carrying their duffles. and I pray silently as I handle every bag and place it on that belt that will carry their provisions overseas, that they will return safely home to their families and that their service will mean something to our nation in the end.

I am sick and tired of you bleeders trying to speak for me, SO HERE IS HOW I FEEL:
Everyone that serves our country makes it possible for you to go to Starbucks, Go to school programs and see your child up on the stage, Fight the crowds at Christmas trying to find the biggest and best wreath to hang on your door so your neighbor will be jealous. I have seen more than you will know. I care more than you will know. So stop trying to speak for everyone that voted for Bush! You are not ME and I am not YOU
May ALL OUR SOLDIERS KNOW THAT I SUPPORT THEM. THAT AMERICA SUPPORTS THEM.
GOD BLESS AMERICA

Sorry Granny but did you get the impression I was trying to speak for you? If so then that wasn't my intention. I have a hard enough time communicating my own opinion, so I'm not going to speak for anyone else..... that being said, I do agree with you.... and I hate Starbucks.

Starting a war over weapons of mass destruction that knowingly didn't exist gives us all of that? In that case bring on the war with Iran!!! Maybe next year daddy will get that brand new car in the garage due to our soldiers fighting somewhere else. I never knew all of this was possible until this war in Iraq started.
