Punishment should have been carried out but I think termination is a bit much..especially if there are no policies in place regarding it.

If our city officials can be persuaded by a few ranting individuals on a open forum then they need to be replaced. Decisions like this should be made after much thought...unless there are strict rules in place stating the punishment.

People like to vent on here and for the most part it was about how the city is keeping their citezens in the dark about what is going on. I think we all would have been happy with an apology and short suspension.

If what has transpired on this forum has made our city officials nervous and mistake prone, then they are not the city officials I want running my city.

I have to agree. People running governments should be relying on policies in place, facts, interviews with witnesses, etc, not forums, blogs, National Inquirer, etc.

I think a majority of the complaint about the incident was not the incident itself but the city's lack of response/appropriate response. At least two threads related to the number of days the city failed to respond.

So, are we looking at a knee-jerk reaction to try and vindicate city actions, at the expense of 2 young families? Yes. I am sorry, Cody and Chris that you are the objects of an inexperienced, mistake laden city government. I have to question why, based on the other incidents, some city officials still have a paycheck and these two firefighters do not.

85239, if you run, you have my vote.

I can not believe how two faced everyone on this form is. Two days you were all calling for them to lose there jobs. You do not think for yourselfs. You just go on what everyone else is saying. Where is all this saddness coming from now. You a##holes asked for it and now you got it. You did a diservice to this community by getting two very brave, smart, and compassionate people fired from there jobs. Did you ever take a moment to think what this is going to do there familys, finances or chance of getting a job. You have no idea how hard it is to get a job with the fire department. You compete with 5,000 + guys for maybe twenty spots. I hope you are all very happy with the decisions you have made. I do not know how you can live with yourselfs.

Just as the city is learning, generaliziations and vague statements are dangerous.

I never called for them to be fired, and there are many others who will tell you the same thing. A small group, who chose to harrass and whine and cloak accusations in questions fueled that.

If you carefully read ALL the postings in all the threads, the complaint was over how the city was handling it. Just because they DID something now, doesn't make it right. Get your facts straight before you make a blanket statement when only a few called for their firing.

AS I STATED, many of us question how they were fired with no policies in place, with no interviews of witnesses, etc. We question the city repsonse, not the events that took place.

many other choices I think were available to those who held the power, and they blew it. Again, the two firefighters should be reconsidered for other administrative corrective and behavioral modification, but not firing. If so, why do we still have city employees on the payroll for incidents just as poorly investigated?

Cody,

Thank you for your apology. I know it cost a lot to write and post it here. I agree that the city over-reacted, but can't say that I am surprised. I wish you all of the best in getting a new position doing what you love.

Not once did I say that they should be fired.

If the city policy does not allow for the paid leave pending investigation (standard procedure in most public service agencies) then how does it allow for firing without an investigation.

Yes, employment during probation is at will and they can be fired for anything or for no reason at all, however that does not mean that an true investigation should not take place and that other options are available - especially with the city saying that the rules and regulations of the fire district did not transfer when they became a city department. If that is the case, then the rules of probation would also not have transfered (likely not very legally sound, but if that's what they're going with. . . then they have to apply it to every aspect of the rules and regulations even though the whole concept is insane).

Three cheers for honesty!! Folks, this whole situation is a perfect example of how damaging this forum can be for members of our community. Time and again I've watched the people on this forum jump on the judgment bandwagon. Do none of you have a mind of your own? Is Maricopa a haven for Stepford wives and lemmings? Are you all so perfect that you are are above being the next victim of this gossip-fest?

Cody Ashton, you have my condolences. I sent you a PM.

How far down have we slid if someone who throws a sucker punch and then runs to his car and speeds away is called brave, smart and compassionate.

Whats next?

Apparently, jumping on the judgment wagon yourself, you choose to read only what you want to as well. Two people now have said they never asked for the firing. That the city handled this poorly as well as other situations of late means nothing?

To reiterate, because apparently you missed it, a responsible city government DOES NOT rely on forum antics to make such an important decision. If they did, then the fault lies with them. They neede to rely on witness accounts, move to act in a more timely fashion.

I won't accept the actions of our city government based on an informal forum. Many have agreed.

It is the inaccurate selective gossipy mindset that you are perpetuating that clouds relevant intelligent postings about the issue. Maybe people are so wrapped up in finger pointing they no longer know how to use good communication skills. Maybe a power point, bulleted list of points is the way to go. Keep it simple.

I find it very interesting that some people here have accepted pigsrule's statements as true. Yet, I don't know who he is. Someone stated that he was one of the Ashton gang, and I have a strong feeling he is.
Now, put yourself in the victim's place. You never pushed anyone at all, which of course contradicts what pigsrule states. And, then you press charges against the sneaky jerk who hit him and ran, and also press charges against the officer of PCSO, who sided with the sneak and tasered the victim.
Now, win or lose, you know that the Ashton's are very vindictive in addition to being rowdy, as I have seen myself in Ramsey's on more than one occasion. Your house suddenly burns down for no reason. And, PCSO might also be vindictive and wait outside your house to see if you spit on the sidewalk, or go a mile over the speed limit, or any one of a thousand possible infractions.
Do you still press charges and live in fear of these things happening?
Or, do you just decide to wait until it all blows over?

I know the victim, and I also happen to know how he is thinking. I don't agree but it is his decision. If it were me, I would have the trouble makers in jail and also go after the PCSO officer in court.
I am not aginst the police nor the fire department. My 2 sons are both police officers, one in NY, the other here in AZ. My uncle was retired from the NYFD, and several of my friends and my son's friends were killed in the WTC.

My advice is to support the police and fire departments, but, when any of their members get out of hand, have a camera on hand to get some good hard evidence. Most of them are honest, hard working and caring men & women. But, like in any group, there are some bad apples. These are the ones we don't need here.

Thank you all for your thoughts and words. I in no way started this thread to stir the pot any. I understand that everyone has there views of the city and the way this was handled. Just to clear things up, to my understanding we were fired by Chief Kellaher, not the city.

There seem to be some glaring differences in the published story and Mr. Ashton's story. It is sad that the PCSO and the city did not do more investigation.

What is unbelievable is that you come across as if SB had something to do with this and that you're using this guy's story to further a little feud between you and SB.

Does anyone know how this could happen? I thought that the Chief's administrative powers were yanked by the interim City Manager.

well to wether this is true or not, I do wonder, I would like some sort of explanation to give my 10yr old who unfortunately picked up the paper and read the story about this and was very confused and the only answer I could come up with was that fire fighters are human too, but it doesnt excuse what they did. I am also curious if nothing happened as it has been said, does that mean the people who "told" the story of what happened lied - ramsey and his employees?
