I'm not sure what the truth is, but the quotes from King's diary (IF they are accurately quoted) would seem to indicate that King was not a Republican.

I don't think it matters what he was. Republican and Democrat meant something different back then, than it does today.

Yes he was, a lot of people seem to forget how the Democrats really fought against civil liberties, and to be honest they still do in a non-direct fashion.

Let's not forget that not only were Democrats against Civil Rights, but Democrats were also against freeing the slaves. That's right, Republicans were the one's fighting for Civil Rights, and Republicans were the one that gave freedom for slaves.

Although you are very right in saying that the parties are very different today. Both parties are much more left than they were 50 years ago. More left than 20 years ago even.

Welfare's purpose should be to eliminate, as far as possible, the need for its own existence.
