Alert | While illegal immigration is a problem, I'd like to cast a little perspective:
The Center for Immigrant Studies estimates that about $10 billion more federal money is spent on illegal immigrants than they pay in taxes. To shed a bit of light on money of the federal budget, over $400 billion was spent on interest to the national debt.
I'll leave it to you to judge whether $10 billion + having to press '1' > $400 billion. | | http://www.maricopabikeclub.com - Join us for a bicycle ride.

Alert | If there were 0 illegal immigrants, you wouldn't notice it much at all on April 15. I guess the real point I'm trying to make here is, we are pretty much all getting a free lunch. We're closing in on $10 Trillion dollar deficit. I think we all need to start paying for our lunch, and for the lunches that we ate the last couple of decades too. | | http://www.maricopabikeclub.com - Join us for a bicycle ride.

Alert | I agree. We don't like to admit it, but we are all part of the so called "Entitlement Generation". In my opinion, we don't need leaders who promise more entitlements for some and less for others through a redistribution of wealth, we need leaders who will encourage ALL OF US to give up some of the entitlements (free lunches to use your words) so that our country can be fiscally sound again.

Putting it bluntly Americans have gotten fat and lazy; We could all stand to skip a meal on a regular basis.

In that book he wrote that, "The American Republic will endure until the day Congress discovers that it can bribe the public with the public's money". Both parties have discovered that this can be accomplished by giving the voters ever more entitlements and paying for it via deficit spending. In the past, the Democrats would be the mommy party, the ones who wanted to spend tax money to cure all perceived ills, with the idea that the government knows best what the people need and how to give it to them. The Republicans could be counted on to be the responsible father figure who would say " no ,we can't afford this entitlement, man up and take care of yourself". After decades of being the minority party, the Republicans finally realized that the Democrats had found out what de Tocqueville was talking about. Now both parties are in a bidding war to see who can offer the voter the most at no cost to the voters (let future generations pay for it, and future politicians figure out how to do it).

Right on, hastings1066. I'm 69 years old and I'm ashamed of how badly my generation has handled the mess we inherited. And I've got kids and grand kids that are going to have to deal with an even bigger mess unless we can collectively accept responsibility and stop voting for candidates that promise us a bigger piece of the pie. Especially the ones who claim the bigger piece is available because of their Marxist redistribution of wealth.
