So I thought everyone was for Obama becuase he was not going to apease the Religous right?

http://www.ktar.com/?nid=386&sid=883326

Reaching out to evangelical voters, Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama is announcing plans to expand President Bush's program steering federal social service dollars to religious groups and _ in a move sure to cause controversy _ support some ability to hire and fire based on faith.... "....I wouldn't be fulfilling God's will unless I went out and did the Lord's work," he was to say......

Maybe seperation "between" State and Church only applies to the Republicans?

Where in the 1st Admendment does it state anything about the seperation between the church and state?

Amendment I

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

I was being sarcastic and the reason why I put quotes around "between". Many people seem to think this is what A1 means, I disagree.

Democrats like to pretend that it says that, which is why what Obama is doing is funny.

Al Gore, who recently endorsed Obama, is probably coaching him on how to manipulate the gullible masses.  Jeremiah Wright summed it up with "he's just a politician doing what a politician does".

Jason, did you just subtly admonish me for my remark? I'm teasing, I know you didn't.

On this issue I must part with some of my conservative brethren. As we all know, the first amendment prohibits the state from establishing a national church or from favoring one faith over another. Most, if not all, constitutional scholars also think that it also prohibits favoring religion over non-religion. This is what most people are thinking of when they talk about the separation of church and state.

We must remember that the state, by its very nature, has overwhelming coercive power, and this was much more so in the time when the Bill of Rights was written. For most of the 300 years prior to American Independence, ones religion was of great interest to the states of Europe. To be a member of the legal church was a requirement of the law. To hold to a faith that was not approved was tantamount to treason. In Catholic countries Protestants were persecuted ,and in Protestant ones Catholics were persecuted. An extreme example was Germany. A 30 year war between Lutherans and Catholics devastated that land, to such a degree that decades later it had still not recovered.

So, when we think about the intent of the framers of the Bill of Rights, we must consider the times in which it was written. They were not living in today's America with a history of 200 years of religious freedom (for the most part). They were living and writing in a time with a history of centuries of religious oppression. Their intent was to keep government out of religion and religion (as an institution, not as personal faith)out of government.

Those who wish for more religious influence over the government, should be careful of what they wish for. What if the religion that gains a degree of influence over the state is one with which you do not agree?

Sorry for the lecture. You can take the teacher out of the classroom but - well, you know.

What Obama is attempting to build on what Bush has started is not in violation with the 1st ammendment IMHO. Since it could be seen as a civil issue to not give to a charity because they are of a certain faith, so I think they are actually following the CL ammendments by protecting the rights of people to be treated equally by merit and not faith.

I do have to hand it to Obama I was surprized when this came out, but I also got a chuckle.

What made me chuckle even more, was when I found out the NRA is spending 14 million on a campaign against Obama. It's rather humorous and scary at the same time, what angry white men will do, to keep others down.

Well hello, he was either beaten by Romans, Egyptians or big monkeys. You would be angry as well.

No link, but those that are against Obama are angry. Why else would they be putting so much effort into making him look bad? Clearly McCain can't do it, so he gets his buddies to.

That wouldn't have been an issue, had he had a gun.

It's called politics, and it's an election year. Have you noticed that some of Obama's supporters are calling McCain a war criminal? what about some of your posts about Bush, now thats hate.
