Mr. Duncan:

I question this "new" program that is designed to clean up 60 properties.  I am referencing the story written by RuthAnn Hogue; on June 26th 2008

In this article I quote her as follows:  "Duncan said the city has hired professionals to clean up those messes, so neighboring homeowners - some of whom are willing to - won't have to pitch in".

Now, Mr. Duncan I have to ask you:  If some of these homes are empty due to foreclosure, repossesion, bankruptcy, etc....  The bank, Lender, Mortgage Company NOW OWNS THEM. Why are not the HOA's going after them to keep their feet to the fire to keep these properties free of weeds and presentable?

Why are my tax dollars being spent and the real responsible party getting off?   These Lenders already got a bailout, and here you are in Maricopa, adding to their bailout, and letting them skip out on their responsibility.

If my neighbor was forced to move, then the City of Maricopa, especially the Department of Code Enforcement, should be holding the deed holder financially responsible, and not us tax payers.

Go ahead and spend our money for this program, but turn around and bill the deed holder, and reimburse our town purse!

I await your reply.
Sincerely,
Granny5X

RichTig- You reply like you just don't care, but I know you do!  I too would like free lawn service, but since you know what It means, Do you agree with me that this Copa-Cares is a waste of our local tax dollars???  And that the HOA's should be going after the lenders that hold the deed?  And our Tax $$ should not be cleaning up our neighborhoods?

Yes, if the HOA were doing their job, then they would go after the homeowners (banks included) to clean up the yards.

I would rather have tax dollars pay for the cleanup than not having them cleaned up at all.

I hope that all the people who walked away from their homes get screwed up credit and can never buy a house ever again.  It would serve those losers right.

quote from article

"COPA Cares benefits the community by bringing people together to assist one another," McDonald said. "Neighbors are uniting in an effort to help those that are unable to clean their yards, and to help with yard maintenance of empty houses."

What criteria do you have to meet to be considered unabled?

The only one I can think of that would be worthy is a disabled senior citizen on a fixed income. And if that was the case their immediate neighbors should be lending a hand.

What?  I ask you to go back to the beginning of this thread and read where I addressed Mr Duncan on the story written by RuthAnn Hogue.  I totally agree with uniting in an effort to help those that are unable to clean their yards, and to help with yard maintenance of empty houses. However, the part of the copa cares program; under the direction of Marty McDonald, along with Brian Duncan and the Mayor Smith, I feel none of them are going to go after the deed holders for this "NEIGHBORHOOD CLEANUP!  I do not want my tax dollars going to pay for landscapers to pull weeds

I can't answer whether or not anyone ( city or HOA) is going after the lien holders. to recoup spent dollars.

I wouldn't deny anyone truly in need if they were unable to take care of their property due to illness.

But as I am sure you are aware of there are many lazy homeowners/renters/investors that would sit back and take advantage of the situation. So where's the motivation to take care of your own yard if somebody else is going to pick up the slack. jmho.

This is exactly my point, as I feel it is yours also.  I do not want to take care of the vacant yard.  If our City officials are going to proceed with this Copa-Cares program  then they better be ready to explain to me and other tax payers why they are paying landscapers to clean up the mess of the deed holders, that should be responsible.

How much it costs each taxpayer is not the point.

Still waiting for brian Duncan, Marty McDonald or our mayor;  Mr. Anthony Smith to reply. If we; the tax payers are getting the wrong impression of this Copa-Cares program, then please enlighten us, and set the record straight.

At the same time could you please answer the previous question and that is: How much is it costing? and my new question: Did the city put this project out for bid, or was it dropped in the lap of a relative?  We seek answers and deserve answers.

Granny you are spot on. Why should this become the Maricopa taxpayers problem? The deed holders for these properties SHOULD have been racking up penalties like crazy for every week the property was in need of maintenance (before Copa Cares came in and fixed it for them). Not allowed to sell the property again until all penalties and maintenance bills are PAID IN FULL. But this is the society we live in today. There is no sense of responsibility for too many people. Mortgage problems? It's the lenders fault, the government should take care of it. Can't retire due to lack of planning? The government take care of that too, right? Lazy highschool dropout can't find a job that pays for health insurance? Well, I bet you know the answer to that one also...

For the last year, both homes on either side of me have been vacant. Every time we do our own yard work we clean up those homes front yards as well.

regancolston- I know what you mean!  Your investment can suffer when the properties next to you are in disarray, however, couldn't us homeowners contact our HOA and find out who currently OWNS the vacant properties and force our HOA's to hold them liable?  If you had an non-operating vehicle parked on the street I bet you would get a letter! The house next to my daughter was vacant for a long time and the trees were dying.  when I stayed over there one day with my grand-daughter, I watered their trees.
