This was at the height of the Cold War when schools had nuclear bomb drills and people had bomb shelters in the back yard. Now that was fear mongering, and it got the Democratic candidate , LBJ, elected.

I don't think it was the fear mongering that got LBJ elected. Did it help, I'm sure it did. The ads during the election of 64 were at a stressful time. They were fear mongering and they were over the top. GW and Rove have been very successful using fear mongering as well.
