DD, As a fellow Viet vet I agree that it was the wrong war at the wrong time. I did not think so at that time, I was a 20 year old army brat who believed what LBj told us. I later came to realize that our national interest was not at stake, but hindsight is always 20/20.  Like you I feel that the fight against Islamic terrorism is an entirely different kettle of fish. I am constantly amazed at the number of people who are in denial and will not even believe the terrorist themselves when they state that they want to destroy  liberal Western civilization. Some just can not grasp the idea that the terrorist do not just hate us for what we do, they hate us for our traditions and beliefs. They hate us for our mere existence. Many in the West simply can not conceptualize such a world view and so deny it exist.

People state things all the time but that does not make them true. We have still not captured the lead terrorist so how serious are we? Instead of saying "the terrorists" you should say "Al-Queda" because they are the ones we are concerned with. Every time the president says "the terrorists" or "insurgents" he is not pinning down just who we are fighting against. If you can not define who you are fighting against then how do you expect to win?

caveman - A few of the Islamic groups that have attacked western targets (US and European) according to the State Dep. -- GIA,Hezbollah, Islamic Jihad, Abu Nidal, Al Jihad, Harakatul-Mujahidin, PFLP-GC, Asbat al-Ansar, QJBR, Abu Sayyaf Group, Al Queda. We have defined who we are fighting - those who wish us harm.

I would still like your opinion about what President Clinton,or Obama, or McCain should do if after more years of negotiation, Iran gets close to achieving its aim of pairing atomic bombs with missiles and still calls for the destruction of Israel and the Us.

We should not worry. #1 we need to stop unconditionally backing Israel they are not a poster child for all that is good in this world. #2 Iran does not have the means to send atomic bombs this far, although North Korea does and I don't see you beating the war drum over them.

First, your N. Korea point was addressed by DD in his 5/4 7:37 post. Second, in what post did I call for war (beat a war drum)? I asked people's opinion as to what the next President should do. I called for no action. Third, do you really think that a dedicated group could not smuggle a suitcase sized bomb into the US. I would just pay the Colombians drug cartels to do it. They bring in hundreds of tons of stuff every year. So, am I correct in assuming that you are of the opinion that a nuclear armed Iran that has vowed to destroy us should be of little concern to the next President?"We should not worry".

One of my predictions is that somehow an Islamic terrorist group will manage to get a nuclear device into the United States via our southern border. It will most likely come across the border in a truck with a NAFTA sticker on it. Once this thing is set off in an American city, you will see civil liberties as we know them today become a thing of the past very quickly and for a long, long time.

North Korea, even though they are a totalitarian dictatorship, still is somewhat rational. The leaders have a sense of self preservation. They are not of the persuasion that they will be rewarded for sacrificing themselves to Allah, and are likely to deploy nuclear weapons as a last resort. Were this not the case, they would have crossed the border into South Korea years ago.

Yeah, Hastings, I was the same way. I was a 19-year-old idealist thinking that an American President would never lie and that Communism, left unchecked, would smother the world like the Kudzu is smothering Atlanta.

Stupid should hurt!

Congressman Rick Renzi said it in a speech a few years back (long before he was investigated let alone indicted)

To paraphrase - If a illiterate Guatemalan farmer can make it across our border undetected, what makes you think someone with either an itinerary or a grudge can't make it across with a nuclear weapon?

They are probably already here, whether or not they brought a nuclear weapon is the question......
