I would just like to express my disgust, as well as many other parents', over the situation that occurred at tonight's Varsity soccer game. This was the last game of the season and the last for many Seniors. In the case of many sporting events, when bad calls are made, there is a response from the spectators. In the game this evening, this was not an exception to many of the bad calls made by a certain referee, and I mean noticable bad calls. Well anyhow, the game finished in a 2 and 2 tie, calling for an overtime of 10 minutes. This ja#k@$$ of a referee, took it upon himself to walk out of the game. Just walked away. No looking back. Apparently, he could not handle the reaction from his lack of judgment. Which in turn left one referee to oversee the game. This lone ref, decided not to go forward with the overtime and just do penalty kicks, in which led to a loss by our Rams. This is not a standard practice in games that are tied. So, I hope this so-called referee who walked off, has a damn good reason for walking away. Did you happen to mess your pants? That would be the only reason that may be acceptable for your action. I hope this feeling that you brought upon our Rams, and the sense of knowing that this is the memory that our Seniors will have to remember for the rest of their lives, will haunt you when you are cashing in your check.

olskool, I suggest you take the referee class and get certified so you can take his place for next year. So many parents think they know the game when they really do not know the laws of the game. We probably have about 3 referee books here....I am sure we can spare one if you like to see how much you really know.

I am more frustrated when we have an unfit referee who can't stay with the play, make the calls and keep the game safe. Also, I personally feel they shouldn't be able to referee if they haven't played because how can you really understand the game if you have never played it? Same goes for players. They should become certified referees and see just how difficult that job is and they would see that the referee doesn't need the added garbage and disrespect from the players, parents and coaches.

My husband is always trying to get me to become a referee. I have been watching my son play for 11 years. I didn't play growing up and I seriously do not know all the rules. I don't even think the class would help me learn the game. I wish I would have played it as it seems so intense and I think this would be the best way to understand the game. I do feel that if you want to referee at a high school level, you best be physically fit to run with the players and keep up with the game.

Both my boys referee and one has been playing soccer since he was 4 years old. If he were to get a yellow or red card for mouthing off to a referee, he knows he would be pulled from playing soccer and sitting on a bench for two weeks, thinking about what he said. That would kill him, but that is my rule.

You need to make your complaint to the assignor or those games. Coming on here isn't going to help. It is unfortunate what happened, but it was a high school game. I hate to think the parents were out of control at a high school game. What does that teach the kids?

I have been to more soccer games than you can imagine and I have seen my share of HORRIBLE referees. Get certified! Make a difference! See how difficult it really is to take in all that garbage from the players, coaches and parents.

My other son was refereeing a game at the age of 12, when a pissed off assistant coach threw something at him....and people wonder why there is a shortage of good referees. Try it! It isn't as easy as you think. You'll need to be recertified every year because the laws are always changing.

Oh....let me know if you need that book ;-)

Why were there only two officials? I would think at this age and knowing how physical the games can get.....I would think they would be sure to have 3 officials. Does the school district not fund 3 officials for each game? Where is the money from the school tax credits going? I would be asking that question? Did you play all season with only 2 officials or 3? How much does it cost for the players to play soccer for the season? Where does that money go?

I don't think olskool was coming on here to change the policies of the governing bodies of referees. Olskool came on here to vent which he/she has every right to do. Unfortunatley being a referee is not a pretty job, just like the guy cleaning out the sewer doesn't have it pretty neither does the referee but they both understand that going in. Although I say that; I don't condone anybody physically abusing a referee at a sporting event. If that does happen though it has nothing to do with the sport itsetlf but to do with the character of the person doing the deed. I see your point though olskool no matter what errors the referee made he had no reason for leaving the field. Thats like an officer leaving the scene of an accident. By doing so the referee not only disrespected everone who was there but also the sport itself. It's probably hard to see past all those rule books you have TC so that's probably why you couldn't see olskools point, so instead of giving them away lets just recycle instead....

Nice first post 007! Who are you really?!?!

Those rule books belong to the 3 referees in the house. I have never even opened one up because I only go to watch my son play. He knows the game, he knows his job. I don't go there to shout at a referee for making the wrong call. He can't see everything. That is why he has two assistant referees on the sidelines. I am just happy to leave with no injuries. I do get disgusted when there is a physically unfit official assigned to the center. If he can't keep up with the level of play...then he needs to referee the lower level games.

I can't see olskool's point because it sounds like it got out of control. From his post alone, I can only imagine the things he was shouting at a school event. I seriously do not think that would be tolerated at my son's high school. I went to all his games this season and never once saw what he described here at their last game.

I wasn't there and I have to wonder why there were not three officials. Also, the referee CAN terminate the game especially if it gets out of hand. I wouldn't blame him either in this case. It sounds like he was short an assistant referee and I am sure this didn't help matters.

This just wasn't any sporting event...it was a school game. Where is your pride? I seriously think any parent acting this way where my son attends school, would most likely be asked to leave or would be escorted off the campus.

Perhaps he left for his own safety. It leaves me to imagine just what really goes on over there. Is there any campus security? I am sure there is more to the story than he reports. I have been at club soccer games where the police have had to remove a parent or coach from the field....so I imagine Friday's game was ugly. I just wouldn't expect this at a SCHOOL sporting event.

We had three officials at every home game this season. I would expect nothing less at this age and level of play. If my son attended this school, as a parent, I would be doing what it takes to ensure three officials at every soccer game, even if that means additional fundraising to pay for it. After all, it is for the player's safety and also makes for a much more enjoyable game to watch as a parent.

This is why it is so important to make the tax donations to the school and request the funds go towards boy's soccer or whatever sport your child plays.

You are right when saying olskool has every right to come on here to complain and vent, but it won't change what happened. It will continue again next year and if he has anymore players there playing soccer in the future...I would see what I could do to change it so it doesn't happen again.

You are absolutely right, TC and 007, I was venting anger. Anger and disappointment that was felt from our team. I am a parent who has been actively involved in my child's sports from the time he was 5. I know the basic rules of soccer, but not to the level of a referee. The point I was really trying to get across is that, althought we expressed dislike of several of the calls, we were not shouting obscinities or throwing objects. The verbiage that was expressed was more or less "What!, come on!" and "Oh man!". Nothing threatening. After seeing how hard the kids played during this game and knowing that it was the last for many here at the high school, they deserved a fair game. I am not saying that I could do a better job, I am saying that it is a shame that the ref walked off the field...

In reality you were still given a fair game by the lone referee. He did the right thing for the kids by making it a penaly shoot rather than trying to referee OT and then possibly as sudden death OT by himself.
If the kids lost on PK than they lost fair.

I played soccer for 13 years, basketball for 7, and baseball for 9 - ref'd soccer, basketball, and little league. You may not think you were not harassing but as a former player and former ref it is still not appreciated. The kids get embarassed or egged on and it leads to whinning by the players or rough play.

The remaing ref did the right thing and the kids had a fair shot at winning. Be happy he stuck around and did the best he could.
