Aside from wrestling programs, nothing is missing. The City Parks Dept has done a great job and I know they have more programs they are going to roll out such as Inline Hockey.

I would love to see a youth wrestling program. Both of my brothers wrestled from the time they were 7 yrs old through high school. One becoming so good at the sport he was a state champ and received a full scholarship!!

I would like to see more sports that teenagers could participate in. I see so many sports for the little kids up to age 12 and then adult softball etc. but I don't see too much for the older kids that isn't related to the schools.

kimmiej-
just to be fair, the parks and rec. deptment has tried many times to get teenagers involved in their sport program. They just do not get enough registration to form a league. I can't tell you how many times my teenager signed up for their soccer and basketball programs. Just before they were to begin, I have received a call letting me know that the 13-15year old age group was cancelled due to lack of interest. I was told that the older kids just don't want to play sports at a recreational level. I think there was a girls fast pitch for older kids offered once. I wonder how that went.

You make a good statement. The PRL rolled out a plan to make the current library a teen rec area. That age group is a challenge.  I'm interested in other activities for the above 12 crowd, too.

I understand that the City, through it's PRL, is looking for other proactive ways to encourage the above 12 group to play sports. One way is thru changing the age groups. The City's top youth sport, as measured by total registration, is soccer. I support efforts to have an age group of 12-14. I know many 13 yr olds that want to continue, but end up stopping(My daughter turns 13 soon). I think the age group change is a good start.

I believe it'll help expand the programs through higher teen agers, too. It may take time, but the PRL has done a fine job of executing plans for our children. I'm confident the success will continue.

My answer is "NO" to Q#5 and Q#1.

When I was in HS I played Rec soccer only because my school soccer coach "strongly encouraged" us to remain physically active and participate in sports programs during our off season. I would think communicating with competitive coaches is one major way to grow that program.

There is a big lack of sports for kids over the summer who are over 12. Thank god for travel baseball teams. Where i grew up there was vfw/legion baseball clubs for teenagers. Here we have nothing unless we want to go to casa grande to play. The reason this year was construction at the high school, there is no reason next year not to have a leauge. The reason there is minimal participation is that we are told when we sign up that there may not be enough to have a leaude so as to discourage us. This city also needs an AAu or travel basketball team.

Maybe....just maybe.....some of you folks haven't looked hard enough at what is available to our city. Click on this site....www.maricopa-az.gov/web/parks/activator.php........I think you will be pleasantly surprised at what is available....from "Tiny Tots" to "Teen" to "Semi-Teen", and others. In case you haven't seen this.......it is published 4 times a year, and the newest issue is 28 pages of Maricopa "happenings"......give it a try......I know I was amazed.

Good Luck.........
