At approximately 3AM this morning, a group of African American and Latino teenagers broke out in a fight in the northwest area of Maricopa Meadows.  Knives were involved and a number of the teenagers were stabbed and cut.  one of the teenagers was critically injured with lacerations by a machete and had to be airlifted out of Maricopa to Maricopa County Hospital.  The other stabbings were not as serious, as I understand it.

As a homeowner and father of young children, there is nothing worse than being awaken by police lights and helicopters in your own neighborhood.  This isn't the first time I've seen this stuff in my neighborhood.

The teenagers involved were all drinking.  Why are these kids roaming around the streets in the middle of the night?  Where are the parents?  What is the police department doing about these kids?  I've pretty much had it with all the disturbances in my area.

Just out of curiosity, if the teenagers were white, would you have described them as "white teenagers", or would you have just written "teenagers"?

My curiousity is similar: Is it the description of the teenagers that led to the link between the crime with rentals and low income?

Whether true or not, I find it sad.

My answer is "NO" to Q#5 and Q#1.

1) I just stated what the police officer told me and what I saw. If it were 8 white teenagers, the story would have mentioned white teenagers. You don't question this when news reporters mention race in their news do you?

2) My family is of minority decent also.

Come on folks. You're getting away from the issue at hand.

I don't think race is a factor here. I mean gangs usually do hang around with others of their similar ethnic background but a gang of one race will generally go after a gang of another race or other ethnic background. Anyone know what affiliation they claimed?

Also, why isn't this on some of the news sites?

Wompus, you make so much sense on this thread.  Thank you.

I'm starting to question why this is not being reported in any fashion.  I called 85239.com anonomously with the story.  I hope they investigate with the Maricopa Police Department.  They landed two medi-vac helicopters on Hogenes Blvd. for goodness sake.

The police department did spend a great deal of time in the area investigating what happened today.  I hope that this story comes out in the open and is not covered up.

Why can parents of children drinking and fighting on the streets at 3 AM not be charged with child neglect?

Okay, when is it going to become apparent that you can't generalize people and be correct. You can't say all minority people belong to a gang or that all renters are bad people. Of course, that's stupid.

You can say that most people who are low income don't own their homes. You can also say that anyone up at 3AM probably doesn't have a 9-5 job.  You can say that many of the people who have made poor decisions in their lives are probably not the kind of people who would be homeowners. This is a social problem. It's a cultural problem. It will only get as bad as the community is willing to tolerate.

Good question: Why did this not get reported? I can see why it wouldn't show up in the Chamber of Commerce Newsletter, but why not here? Why not a statement from the City or a police spokesman?

Stupid should hurt!

Thats an easy one. There was no city or police statement because when the issue of gangs is brought up to the city, it is downplayed as not a big problem.

My question is, where does one get a mechete? Can anyone just walk into a hardware store and buy one?

This is a social problem. It's a cultural problem. It will only get as bad as the community is willing to tolerate.

This was the main theme of the thread:

Group of minority  teenagers out at 3am sun Morn involved in a stabbing crime.

These were the conclusions: Parents are terrible, families are low income(if they work at all), families are renters,

Yet, I for one, don't know if I know any of the kids, parents or families. I haven't seen anything if any of the kids' parents are low income, out of jobs, and/or renting.

The point I'm making is that based from the first sentences of this thread, conclusions were jumped to without any news or direct knowledge. People are saying "of course, it's stupid to generalize", yet conclusions were jumped to.

I believe we must be mindful of our biases.I'm not saying it is prejudice(that is a different thing altogether). I am saying biases. We all have them.  The important thing is that we stay aware of them so they don't interfere with our judgement nor be perceived as being worse by others.

This is a terrible event. I'm sure the police are doing their best to do  to find the truth. I pray for all those involved. I pray for the familes and the children.

The good thing about this thread, it shows that people care about our families and our community.

So many sad things from reading all this:

1* that it happened at all
2* that someone was killed
3* that it isn't being reported, for whatever reason. If it weren't for this thread, how on earth would we have known this was happening in our own backyards?

A few years ago there were reports of a double homicide behind the Albertson's in Casa Grande. The media called the police asking for information, torches were lit, pitchforks were sharpened, and the whole town was in an uproar because this was reportedly gang related. The fact was that it was a rumor. There were no bodies, there was no shooting, there was no gang war.

Can anybody here confirm what happened? It seems that whatever went on is top secret. It would be nice to confirm the event before now that we have established that we are in the middle of an race-based gang war. I don't doubt that something happened, but I'm afraid that this is sounding like bodies behind Albertson's.

I sent THREE requests for media info to Stephen Judd, the PIO with MPD yesterday. I have received NO response as of this morning. There was nothing in the PCSO reports that looked like it was associated with this alleged incident.

So MPD is either keeping it very quiet (which is bad on their part) or it didn't happen or somewhere in between.

I CANNOT AGREE MORE WITH THE NEED FOR MORE STREET LIGHTS!!!!

Light Pollution? What is that? Geez!
Safety! That is what I am more concerned about. 1/2 a block is black at night. Just last week, my neighbor was accosted by some crackhead at 11:30pm as she pulled into her driveway from work. I was watching from the window to make sure she was okay. She had to run into her garage. The guy came out of nowhere because the street was so dark you couldn't see a thing! With all the empty houses, no home lights are on. Its is an extreme safety hazard.

Read the story on the main page. It is a report of this thread!!! Amazing if this is all a big hoax. Unreal times we live in! Did anyone else see this happen? A helicopter landing in a neigborhood makes a ton of noise.

I'm sure something happened, and that it was bad. We have a bunch of concerned citizens. That is good. We also have a bunch of assumptions, and those can be damaging. I just suggest continuing to ask for details and then comment on the facts when we get them.

People, you are no better than the people that commited this supposed crime, when all you do is make excuses as to why, when, where ,who..... and blame the lack of "light Pollution". Crime happens whether there are street lights or not, that is factual and proven. The bottom line is the parents are responsible for instiling responsibility and respect in their children. The COMMUNITY is responsible for the reporting of irrisponsible parents and children. Like the old saying goes...."children learn what they live". Quality family time and community. WE have NO street lights where I live (for over 12 years) and crime of this sort just non-exsistant. Step up to the plate! THey would be scared to "hang out' if it was dark, punks like them need the PROTECTION of the lights!!!!!! that's why they hang in a "GANG' or GROUP. Without protection or back up they are NOTHIN........ REPORT SUSPISIOUS ACTIVITY, PROTECT YOURSELF, WATCH YOUR KIDS!!!! I DO.......my neighbors do!!! The crime comes with growth not with the darkness and not with income. It is also proven that most are children living financially stable lives that lack somethings at home and they look for love and respect elsewhere, this happens almost always in areas where there is no sense of COMMUNITY!!! KNOW YOUR NEIGHBORS>>>ALL OF THEM! MOST OF ALL..KNOW YOUR CHILDREN and make them important, most important!!!!!
