We will be going to the western side of the Estrellas east of the Sevenmile Mountain.  We were tthere last month but didn't go all the way up the trail to the stone house.  That is our objective this trip.

Let's meet in the Basha's parking lot at 8 AM and plan on rolling out at 8:30.  Bring your lunch.  Dogs, kids, and cameras  are welcome.  There will be some hiking, but for those who don't want to go up the foot trail, they can keep an eye on the vehicles.

This is an easy trail and just about any high clearance vehicle should make it.  There are a few washes to cross and 4WD helps.  Vehicles off road in the desert will get scratched up by the Mesquiite and Palo Verde along the trails.  Keep that in mind.

Drop a post if you think you can make it!

You always seem to pick the weekends we can't go

We'll go one of these times..

Is there a website somewhere that describes trails around here that we can do on our own sometime (without tresspassing)?

DD,
I have an 03 4 wheel drive gmc sierra 1500 truck, but it's not raised at all, and it's kind of long, compared to your jeeps, due to the back seat. Please forgive my off road ignorance, but do you think it would be okay for this trip?

I don't think you would have a problem on the trail. Last time we had two flat bed trucks out there and they did okay. My Jeep is pretty much stock except for the big tires and I haven't come across anything. This is what the off-roaders call a level 2 trail, which means just about anything should be able to do okay with a little common sense and caution.  Plus, if you do get hung up on something, there will be several of us with tow straps and hi-lifts who can get you out.

Just keep in mind that there is Mesquite, Palo Verde, and Creosote that will scratch the paint if you're worried about appearance.

My steering rack in my jeep has issues... and just my luck jeep is back ordered on them. Maybe next time for me.... does anyone know of any good aftermarket web sites for that?

You must be a lady.  Any guy brave enough to bring both his girlfriends along would have my highest respect.

Sounds like a fun run!  Bring plenty of water.  Top off your gas tank before you leave.  You won't use a lot because we're not going that far, but I never leave the pavement without a full tank.  Better to not need it.

We will stop along the way and have lunch, so bring whatever sounds good for the trail.  We also take out time when there is any scenery, which is often, so bring along your camera and some extra batteries.

Here is a link to a website authored by John Deal.

www.brazilbrazil.com/estrella.html

He grew up hiking in the Estrellas.  Very interesting reading, compete with pictures and maps.  You will see a map etched in stone.  That's our first destination.  The stone house that it points to is the second.

The stone house

See you all tomorrow at 8AM in the Basha's parking lot.

We had a nice time, mostly due to the wonderfully friendly people we met today. The weather was perfect, the view was great, and the roads were bumpy, all the trappings for an awesome 4x4 trip. Hope we can all do it again. Thanks DD for leading the way.

We had a great time, made some new friends, and I got some good pictures. We didn't find the stone house, but we did locate the 1968 trail marker. We also found a ton of petroglyphs at the southernmost point of Montezuma's head. I will be posting pics as soon as I get a chance to upload them.
