Yeah, the only thing we have to go on now are the rumors that he was believed to be a "leak" to the media. I don't think I've heard anything else negative or that would imply that he was not a "team player". Maybe the citations or whatever that he gave to the city for not following their own codes, but that would just be stupid. Wouldn't you want to know if your building was in danger of catching fire and then do something to remedy it?

Maybe we don't have all the information, in fact I'm sure we don't. Maybe they should give us the information?! And don't worry, I'm registered and I'm voting, but I won't be voting for a single incumbant!

I agree with you 100%. Unfortunately there probably is no "correcting" this decision unless more information is brought forward about it. It doesnt make much sense that this was done for budgetary reasons. Unless Chief Kelleher or Amy file suit over this, we the citizens are unlikely to get any more details as to why it happened.

Unfortunately, ever since my run-in with Mr Kolman, I have a very difficult time getting any responses to my questions from the city. They used to be very cooperative with information.

So to answer your question, what can you do???....VOTE THE OLD REGIME OUT!

We are at a point in our city where it doesnt matter if a deal or decision is a good one or bad one because noone trusts the city anymore, so all decisions are perceived as bad and thats when the rumor-mill starts. If we dont address the "trust" issue first, it will be impossible to get anything done as a city. I have spoken with the new candidates for council numerous times and I believe they feel the same way. The incumbents running for re-election...not so much.

I think it is easier for the city to place blame on revenue shortfalls to avoid telling the citizens what is actually going on.

I spoke to Will Dunn at Community Support Day about the firings and asked him if he knew why they happened. His response was: Amy was let go because she was driving the developers away instead of attracting them and the chief was fired because he wasnt a "team player". Budgetary issues were not mentioned as a reason.

Translation:  Amy was fired because she enforced the city codes and ordinances and wouldn't do special favors for the developers, which would have resulted in projects that would cause problems for all of us down the road.

The Chief wasn't a team player?  Hell, that's a compliment.  Especially considering that the team was lead by Roger Kolman.

Mr. Godsey and I have found some common ground:  A Clean Slate in 2008!  There are some good non-incumbent people running for office for the right reasons.  Find out who they are and vote for them.  And don't forget to sign the newest Estes recall petition when you see one outside Basha's or Fry's.

Irish Creme, you asked "What should we do now?"

We believe the new city manager has lied to us. Blatantly lied to us. We also believe the council was involved in directing these firings – both the involvement and the directing of the firings are against the law. Godsey isn’t the only person Dunn has made these statements to. There are at least two others. Demand an explanation as to why there is a conspiracy to eliminate two critical regulators for the city?

Demand an explanation from the new City Manager as to why he has used the excuse of finances. We, the citizens of Maricopa, are the boss – NOT Evans. I think Evans should be immediately fired for lying to us.

Demand a full report of the budgetary “crisis” that should include all alternatives considered and why eliminating two key regulators who are exceptional public servants was deemed the best alternative. Demand to have this report immediately, since, of course this is a budget issue as they are claiming, then the analysis and recommendations have already been completed. This, of course, would be professional management. I suspect you will find nothing – they may scramble to put something together to cover their tail but that will be after the fact and will be another lie.

Demand change with your vote. Vote out all incumbents! They are involved in this and are counting that you, the voter, will not stand up and rise against them. March 11th is the primary. Tell everyone you know to get out and vote and to VOTE OUT Dunn and Haddad – the 2 incumbents up for election. CLEAN SLATE 08!

Finally, send this entire thread to the Attorney General’s office and the FBI, White Collar Crimes Unit. Let them demand answers, because if what being reported on this thread is true, serious crimes have been committed.

While I share your sentiment that we have lost at least one very talented pubilc servant (I do not know much about the other one), what proof do we have that we were lied to?

After all, the budgetary issue is very likely a realistic one.  The City has thrown money out hand-over-fist over the past three years, and has shown no willingness to slow that impulse down even as growth (and therefore, income) has slowed.

Without more evidence that we were deliberately misled, however, I'm not sure there's enough there to paint the picture that we were lied to.  If we're going to base this belief on something said by Mister Dunn, we may have to acknowledge that the whole "team player" bit was just the tipping point...and that city management's stubborn inability to control its reckless spending was the main culprit here.  Given the city's track record of throwing money out the window to pave a temporary parking lot, that seems perfectly plausible at this point.

Gila Guy - The removal of the Fire Chief CAN IN NO WAY BE BUDGET related. How do I and others know this. Due to Roger Kolman's public statement during the last council meeting. When he was asked by Council if the Fire Department would be impacted by the budget constraints he said no. Not maybe, not yes, not we have to see. He STATED NO.

For you to state that the Fire Chief's removal is budget related then means that Roger Kolman is a liar. Period, end of story. Even if it was due to the budget, then the City went behind the public' back and did not go through these changes in a public forum. Every other city, town and county government goes through the information in front of the public. During such meetings, departments that will be impacted, positions that will be impacted, revenue projections, expense changes, all gone over. What does our council do, they have a generic presentation without this information. Again, our council has refused to operate above board. ANYONE who continues to operate behind closed doors is obviously hiding something. Otherwise they would face their bosses - the community.

What we have are council members who believe they can continue to get away with failing our community. The solution, vote the ones up for re-election and recall the rest. Again, what we have is either the council making deals behind clsed doors, or Roger Kolman lying in public, or a both. Neither one, nor the other is acceptable and needs to be stopped.

I say we need to boycott all of the current council members lands. I am sure that soon as they are out of office, someone is going to try to make a deal for their land...

I say ...never deal with them!

As far as everything else in this city, it's down the tubes and they are getting rid of the last few people who could blow the whisle on those shaddy deals they were pulling. Get them under a "SSHHHH"" clause.

That's why they were fired...

Just doing it one day at a time. Change is good and it should be looked upon as an improvment! not a problem.

I'm asking, not telling.  I don't have any more facts on this than anyone else does.  My inherent belief is that the fiscal problems are worse than managementis letting on, and that this offers proof.

Having said that, I don't trust Kolman any more than anyone else does.  So with more facts, I could easily accept your explanation.

If you really mean  that you can start now.  Just don't patronise Arena, Brooklyn Boys, Maui Wowi etc. since that is the Mayors land.  Of course this would punish others as well.

I guess my post about three months ago concerning city financials are coming around quicker than expected.  I thought it would take about 14 to 18 months for the trickle down effect to take place.  I hope that the new council members who get elected take a complete open dialog with city residents, not this hide and seek theory because we are quote "city top management".  Just one strong council member that exposes all concerns other than legal and HR issues will go high up in respect and confidence from the citizens.   Having leadership with all kinds of financial angles, from bankruptcy petition, city hall building property leased  from current mayor, council member involved with firm sueing thecity, there is only one true solution, CLEAN HOUSE, AND EXPOSE THEM if needed.

REALITY CHECK! Everyone is replaceable! No one person is going to sink Maricopa! AND unless any of you actually work for the city, you can only speak to relationship with them on a personal basis.

I'm not say either of the folks were not high quality, I'm saying you can't speak as if you know how to run the city when you don't know how the tasks were distributed, the quality of their work, how the tasks will be performed by the new owners.

To say that the city is going downhill because of a restructure is just totally ridiculous! I look forward to this new guy doing awesome stuff for Maricopa. You just watch!

And with a new city council, Maricopa with be the BEST!

Joe Man you are very right in your piece, Smoking Gun needs to go to a positive thinking seminar.  This city picture will probably be missing a few more pieces of the puzzle until things start to come around again.  I boat at Lake Conroe in Texas during the summer.  Huntsville, Texas was the major player between Dallas and Houston.  Mr. Evans managed a city with a university, state corrections facilities, and other entities, so let the guy do his thing and question him later if needed.
